  1. I believe that your diagnosis is correct. If I double clutch while shifting down it goes in easily, so Double clutching while downshifting is what I will be doing. Thanks Tony
  2. Recently acquired 2001 Hilux diesel is having issues with overheating when pushed hard on hot days. Air conditioner seems to make it more likely to happen i suspect that the radiator is partially blocked and/or The viscous fan is not working correctly and/or The thermostat is stuffed and/or the engine has head / head gasket issues. Any advice on what to check first and what to look for in testing each item listed. Are there any other causes that you can imagine would cause these symptoms? Tony in WA
  3. I have experimented with double clutch shifting 4>3 and it improves the shifts markedly. I will double clutch 4>3 from now on.
  4. Thanks for your reply..You may be correct, but I will need to continue to shift 4>2>3 when shifting 4>3 as I cannot afford a gearbox overhaul.
  5. Use your GPS as Toyota speedo (and most other manufacturers) always read about 6KM/H more than what you are actually doing (according to my GPS) Otherwise take it to Toyota and be told that it is within specs so they will do nothing about it, Tony
  6. I also have issues with a new (to me) 2001 Hilux 4WD 3L diesel shifting 4>3 while moving. Easy to shift any gear from any other while stationary, but 4>3 whilst moving is nearly impossible to get, even with a lot of force it is only about 30% success. I have to go 4>2>3 while clutch is depressed, to reliably change 4>3. As I have only had the ute a week, I would hope to get some guidance on the fault finding and remediation of this issue. Thanks in Advance, Tony
  7. Did that fix it? I have issues with 4-3 changes, 2-3 is good, 3-4 is good, but 4-3 I need to depress clutch, shift 4-2-3 and release clutch to get it to go from 4-3. Sitting at the lights with clutch depressed, I can shift 2-3 , 3-4, 4-3, 3-4, 4-3 without any difficulty, but when rolling I cannot go 4-3 direct unless I provide a LOT of force and then it only goes in about 30% of the time! The clutch works well and engages smoothly from standing starts and no obvious issues while driving, apart from the 4-3 gear change issue. I have been driving manual and automatic cars and trucks for over 52 years and this is the first manual vehicle that I have had with shifting issues like this. Is there a solution? What should I check first?
  8. I have bought a 2001 Hilux and have issues with the manual gearbox shifting. shifting up 1-2-3-4-5 all OK Shifting down 5-4 OK 4-3 cannot find 3rd gear, #-2, 2-1 all OK The only way I can shift 4-3 is to (while holding clutch in) shift 4-2 then 2-3 then engage clutch. Is this a common fault with this model? I have driven another one with the same issues. Does anyone have a solution for this problem. Tony in West Australia
