  1. So unless something really rad comes along, i think i'll be going for either the supercharged or turbocharged version of the 1G, or the 1JZGTE. The SR20 is an interesting option too but not sure how it would go with all the extra mods - gearbox, diff etc. Does anyone have any ideas or experience on how these engines compare as far as bang for buck and in terms of extent of other mods required?
  2. Hey guys, haven't been on here in ages as the Celica's been gathering dust in the father-in-laws yard while i fiddle around with my other ride. I got to thinking about doing an engine swap in that car and it reminded me about my plans for the Celica so i started looking around for engines again. I've got an RA28 and am wanting to eventually replace everything. As for powertrains i was originally wanting to go down the tried and true 1JZGTE route and its still a very healthy option but i'm also considering others. I've been looking into either the 1GGZE or 1GGTE. Both are fairly affordable. There's also a 4AGE which i'm still unconvinced about. Do they have enough grunt to haul around the heavier Celica? Also... still waiting to hear back from the guy what it came out of. If its an MR2 its possibly too much a pain in the rear to re-engineer from a mid set up. And don't flame me here... but i also considered a Nissan engine, either the RB20 or 26 DET. So i was wondering... anyone have any thoughts on any of these ideas in terms of expense/hassle to do the actual swap, potential problems and expected power outcomes?
  3. Hey all... tossing up buying a GT4 either in st162 or 185 guise or possibly an MR2. Preferably the AW11 model tho the SW20 is still up for consideration... My problems currently are finding a supercharged AW11 in manual that doesn't cost me the earth (so far i've found a relatively nice and very cheap supercharged auto or a better condition manual N/A). The SW20 is not too bad but has even less space for storage and weighs heaps more. And to be honest... the 'snap oversteer' handling characteristics scare me a little. Any thoughts on any of these vehicles? Its this or an early MX5 or classic 70's Porsche 924...

Cheers, but if i could find a supercharged manual that someone was willing to part with for a reasonable price...

    AW11 Search

Hey all... i think i've found a sweet little AW11 to buy that's in really straight condition. Only problem is its an auto. Any idea of the cost of converting it to a manual and how big a job/drama it is. For the record there's no way i'd be doing the work myself...
  6. I'm thinking of buying an RA60 today for parts to assist in the rebuild of my RA28. Any ideas on what i could use and if it would be worthwhile. The 60 is super cheap so at this stage i'm thinking what have i got to lose? Thoughts?
  7. Using the video card as an analogy, imagine you have an old PCI video card and motherboard. Thats your 18RC. Upgrading to a better carby engine like an 18RG is simply buying a better PCI video card and swapping the cards. Simple work. A 1GGTE or 1JZGTE would be equivalent to basically buying a new AGP or PCI-X video card, then having to get a whole new motherboard (ie loom + ECU) as well, as well as probably upgrading PSU, RAM etc as well to get the most out of it. Not simple at all, especially for someone who is not an expert in the area. Best bet is to buy the components yourself and then give them all to a professional to build. Yeah... that's pretty much the plan. Find out all the bits and pieces that i need for the conversion, purchase them and then hand the new components off to a pro with my car otherwise all ready to be converted. ie, the bits that need pulling out of my car would be already taken out by me at this point so ideally all that has to be done is that the pros in question just install the new components.
  8. Ok... price update. I got prices from two places, one online and the other one from a physical visit. One place has the 4AGZE half cut for 1900 while the other price was closer to around 1800 i think. Meanwhile the 1JZGTE was 2300 from the more expensive place and i think closer to about 2100 or so from the cheaper place. Obviously while the supercharged engine is cheaper there are a few other bits and pieces that unit will need whereas the turbo is closer to complete at that price. Incidentally i saw a price of 2000 for the 1GGTE. I'm not especially tech savvy either, so i'll be handing most of the really tricky stuff over to some pros but whatever happens i'll be more than happy to keep people posted if they wish.
  9. So far i only really have prices on half-cuts for either the 4AGZE or the 1JZGTE. And i only have those from two different dealers, not that i imagine the price differs vastly. From memory the 4AGZE is a little cheaper at around 1800 or so but would require extra work and a different gearbox so not sure how much the extras would cost and i think i got a price around 2k or so for the 1JZGTE which apparently slots in fairly easily.
  10. I went looking out for a few engines on the weekend for my 77 RA28 and found out a few more bits of info. I definitely want to "keep it in the family" so to speak with a Toyota engine but originally wanted to stick to either an NA unit or a supercharged one. Possibly either the 18RGEU with a few webers and extractors etc. or the 4AGZE. However i realised that with the 4AGZE out of the AW11 MR2 a fair bit of tinkering would be involved as its an east/west engine and mine is a north/south one. Also, its out of a mid engined car and would be going into a front engine rear drive scenario and would also only go with the 4A gearbox which added another complication. The other engine option, apparently much easier and possibly even cheaper is the 1JZGTE 2.5 litre 6 out of the early Supra. Initially didn't want to go turbo but this may be most straightforward. Anyone had any experience with any of this or otherwise thoughts?

  12. Hey all... newbie here. I've been the proud owner of an RA28 since around 96. She was my first car but unfortunately she's been off the road since october '05. My partner's car was stolen and now i'm struck with the desicion of what to do with my car. I'm wanting to do a rebuild but am unsure how to go about it. At the moment the car's pretty stock apart from some headers and a suspension upgrade which is probably currently due for replacement anyway. I'm not mechanically cluey enough to do all that much myself apart from a few body bits and pieces and possibly a few interior bits as well. Things that desperately need replacing etc are engine/motor and gearbox, rust and a new paint job, some seals etc and suspension. Any suggestions of how i should go about this? Who is reliable people to see in the Brisbane area? What components to go for? I just want my car to have a bit of go, but it has to remain relatively economical and reliable and above all fun to drive. At this stage i'm not fussed about engine aspiration but i'm leaning towards NA or at the very least supercharged. Cheers all.
