Tks for reply. Forward gears are fine. Gear changes are smooth. It just has trouble selecting reverse. Once the gear lever is in R, can wait 30 seconds until you feel the gear engage. Once engaged reverse works fine too. First step may be to get the gearbox flushed out.

I am having problems selecting reverse gear in my 1993 auto camry wagon. Checked transmission oil level. Problem seems worse when car pointing uphill. Transmission specialist suggested complete dismantling of transmission which may not been worth it. Appreciate any advice.
