  1. Hi, Got caught far away from a petrol station the other day in sweltering weather (Aircon using more fuel) and saw the tank was low. So turned the Aircon & all other non essentials off & headed for fuel. But the last TEN minutes the LOW FUEL warning light came on erratically and the engine started to have power drops & sputtering. Filled her up just in time. From the day after this event the engine has had the same erratic power drops. These usually start after turning into a hill or any other power up situation & then continue at more normal power settings. The 4A-FE engine is performing pretty poorly after perfect performance since I bought her 4 months ago. This is a 19 year old vehicle, 1991 Seca. Had low fuel once before (to the point of LOW FUEL light blinking) but got the car refuelled within less than five minutes and no problems after that. This time is different. So talked to a mechanic and he diagnoses fuel tank silt is clogging the fuel filter. He is saying 1) the filter will need to be replaced 2) the fuel line cleaned out and, 3) to stop the problem recurring, the fuel tank removed and cleaned out. What I need to know is a) any comments on the diagnosis and proposed remedy? b ) Can this problem harm the engine? c) Can someone give me an idea of the engineering here: Are this era fuel tanks still metal, with eventual corrosion in the stew or is this just dregs from our imperfectly clean fuel? In this model the fuel filter is inside the fuel tank with the fuel pump or where? Presumably it stands before the fuel line to the engine? The fuel is siphoned from a fixed or floating position on the fuel? 4) Any recommendations of mechanics to fix the problem in the Northern Beaches of Sydney area? thanks in advance
  2. I've gone with a DVD 1698U head unit. It supports pretty much everything I specified up top, including good radio support (very intuitive controls for the 30 presets, no mucking about) + Divx, CD, DVD, USB, SD card, WMA, MP3, MPEG4. Universal MUTE button for when you want QUIET to concentrate on driving!!!! Sniped it on Ebay for $99AU plus 10% for 1 year warranty. Bought from River Trade based in Alexandria, Sydney . Ok people in my interactions so far. Installed by Druery's Car Radio at Brookvale for $130 including reinstalling the broken antenna. Thankyou again to Rolla Boy for that aerial! Standard RCA output to screen for video. I'm now considering the options there. We want a max 10 cm high unit that is a good display screen ONLY. Probably TFT then, not LCD. About a 4.5" diagonal, 16:9 screen. This is to be velcroed to the passenger side dash. Ideal would be a wireless connection to the RCA picture feed, which at present resides in RCA wires peeking out from the carpet near the front passenger's feet. Anybody got any ideas for the screen?
  3. Mmm Pick & Payless, yum. They'd be the go if I only had time to get out to Kings Park before 5. Anyway I'm putting it out there in the community. Anyone know what the name of that spring is? It probably doesn't even have a part number. Come under the whole gear change handle I spose.....
  4. Hi Ben, Sound very effective but don't they sort of bleach things like maps, upholstry, retinas etc? B)
  5. This has to be one of the smallest parts looked for on the boards. You know the Overdive OFF button on the shift handle of the Auto Corollas? (Mine is a 91 AE92, not sure of the year coverage of the part). Anyway that button works because of two springs behind it: one pushes out and one holds it in - in the OD ON position. It's the second one I'm looking for. The attached pic should explain exactly what I mean. That is a hand drawing, but it's fairly accurate. If the spring is unobtainable I'd consider getting the whole handle assembly, as long as it's black.
  6. 48 LED. Sounds powerful. Does that fit in the standard mount?
  7. I just checked with REPCO and they claim to only stock the incandescants - no LEDs. So as so often it's only EBAY for this contemporary tech.
  8. That's what I'm looking for, actual experience with the options.
  9. Back after lots of computer overhauls, almost finished. OK. Had a good look on Ebay and at the automotive stores. The latter don't seem to want to know about LEDs for interior. Apparently REPCO may have them, but haven't had time to check there. The auto stores support the standard battery killer incandescents. What century are they still in? Anyway plenty of great deals on EBAY. Prices from $5 for two for the types in Pic at left below to $15 for the bigger "wide set" type in the right hand pic below. The RH type is definitely a 6-SMD. Just doesn't have the right mounting to fit in the recessed ceiling socket. Fit straight into the boot socket though. Actually what does "SMD" stand for? Do you reckon the smaller one on the left would be under powered for the interior ceiling? If so I'll keep looking for the 6-SMD with a fitting like left hand example.
  10. 6-SMD LED's will go in there nicely. Should be around the $15 mark each off eBay. Yep, getting near to pay dirt I sense. I've been having computer troubles but I'll get back to this discussion in a few days. Meanwhile I'm doing some research at the car accessory outlets. Thanks to everyone who's been contributing.
  11. Hi, the interior ceiling light is 7x13 cm (pic attached, on the right), and the boot light is 5x10cm (pic on the left). It would be good of course to keep the three position toggle options of OFF, DOOR and ON for both lights. Otherwise I'm looking for units that can slot straight into those positions with max KISS principles applying but giving the much greater illumination of LED lights.
  12. Hi, What are people using to replace the incredibly inadequate incandescent interior light on ceiling & boot of these models? All I need is the much better (wider, fuller) illumination an LED would provide from the 12v available.
  13. "No need to upgrade anything Except for the battery." Looking for some hard info here. Did you need to upgrade the battery to power the new Headunit, or possibly the screen? What sort of battery do you need/have now? (Having several teenage kids etc I do look at bargains. I've been amazed at the variety & new technology on offer at Ebay.)
  14. Hi RollaBoy, Sounds like a nice system. Got a pic? This is the sort of system I'd consider. AND the car's electrics handle that load fine? No need to change anything with the fuses? As for price, people should look at Ebay offerings like at: http://cgi.ebay.com.au/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?Vi...em=350152673906 This Ausriver, New In Dash 60Wx4 Car FM DVD VCD CD MP3 SD USB Player went for $107. If one searches Ebay for Car Parts, Accessories > Audio, Video > Players > DVD, VCD Players you turn up dozens of units like this all at around the $200 price point, supporting DVD but initially sold WITHOUT SCREEN. I'd get that later. I gave up looking for JUST sound support as there were so many with video support. Anyone had any experience with these units?
  15. Well what multimedia units (among the dozens on the market) are people putting in their cars with the 5x18cm form factor head units? I'm sure the information would be useful generally.
  16. Hi, We want to replace the olde tape player that came with our 1991 Rolla Seca Ultima. Looking at JB Hi FI and on Ebay the choice is pretty amazing. The prices on EBAY are often around (or below) $200, which would be good for the budget. Also DVD and video screen support seems to be becoming more & more standard. See attached a photo of the Head Unit and dash board area Of the AE92. Note it’s about half height of later models: about 5 x 18 cm. Q1: Is there any particular name for this form factor? We don’t need a screen right now & we want to keep costs down. So we’re not looking for a foldaway screen setup. However it would be good to have screen support to add on later by wire or possibly wireless, having the screen clipped to the dashboard or used by passengers. We have no use for touch screens (or piling up due to them ). Q2: Power. Is there any issues with electrical power support for a DVD / screen capable Head Unit with the AE92s? Do they provide enough juice? This is the Ultima model with power everything, pretty power hungry as is. Any need to change fuses etc with higher drain Head Units especially running a screen? Q3: Model recommendations: So we are looking for suggestions of multimedia Head Units with the following specs: 1) Control of volume and track skipping via a knob rather than a tiny button (again for non pile-up joy of usage). 2) Good radio support. It’ll be heavily used both for Sydney AM & FM radio so this shouldn’t just be an add-on in the design, which I’ve seen in some of the whiz bang multimedia monster units. 3) MP3, CD-R & commercial CD support. 4) As mentioned above, DVD support with option for screen to be added later. 5) Very important: USB support, possibly SD card support. 6) Car has 4 original Toyota speakers, so doesn’t need more than quadraphonic support. 7) Must have a button that acts as a master MUTE so the driver can easily kill the sound when needed. 8) Around the $200 price point.
  17. So Dexron II is becoming an unsupported fluid in the general market then?
  18. The ATF Dexron II is also recommended for the power Brake booster, so all above questions also apply to that for the AE92 Rolla models.
  19. Hi, Getting the right fluids together for my '91 Rolla Seca automatic. The manual recommends ATF Dexron II for the power steering and auto transmission. The local SuperCheap auto only had Dexron III. a) The "III" does mean a higher viscosity and I should get Dexron II??? B) Is ATF Dexron II still made / available in my area (Sydney, Nthn Beaches)?
  20. OK the tyre's fixed. In the end took it to Beaurepaires as it was nearest to the latest appointment I had. They found a previous "service station patch" had come out and fixed the tyre for $35. Nice service. As for the Rego, which was complicated by being due right in the Silly Season, don't ask. All I'll say is I took it to the nearest approved Toyota dealer and they completely crapped up the entire operation. I should have gone to Chatswood Toyota as Rolla Boy suggested (just they were closed on the day I needed it). The very well known place I did go do MISdirected me to their own Service Department (actually gave me the wrong cross streets), but most importantly didn't tell me their computers had gone down that day. It took another week and a return visit to get the Pink slip converted to the electronic form & sent to the RTA as I needed. Check the place's computers are running before getting your pink slip. A written one is useless if you want to renew online. Anyway THANKS to everyone who's contributed to this thread.
  21. Aghh after a pretty awful New Year I'm finally getting to fixing this aerial. Many thanks to Rolla Boy for the replacement antenna. Am I reading you right AE102 that with your model there's a plug behind the driver's kick panel to connect & disconnect the antenna coax? There isn't a co-ax connector behind the RH kick board in the AE92s more the pity (see image - the circular cable running vertically through the screen is the coax that goes from the antenna all the way to the back of the radio in this model). As well there's the anti theft feature that you need to take the whole dashboard off above the steering wheel to take out the old sound system. This is not one of my fave jobs, may that vandal go to @#%%#!!! land! Happy New Year to everyone else ;) !
  22. I've had a look at the footwell area and can't see anything like the antenna string. Do you mean the area behind the fuses on the driver's side, or above them? It's getting very late here in Sydney now, I'll have another go at this tomorrow. Thanks to all who have been helping with this.
