  1. Hey, ive lost my current celica due to an accident (old lady pulled out in frontof me whilst i was on a roundabout) :(

and was looking for a new one i had a 1990 Celica SX with $$$ lots spent on it, (water pump, high pressure pwr steering hose, new timing belt and timing gear, reco pwr steering pump, wheel bearings, reco gearbox, custom intake, g4 coilovers)

and ive come across a 97 model i dont know much about the 6th gens but the better engine would the coil overs swap straight in or not? what im asking is do they have the same bolt patterns for suspension?

any help would be great.. :)

  2. Haha its easier to just buy another car thats not a celica, believe me - extensive work with and around celicas has proven to be more painful than what its worth, i gave the idea of celicas away after my third one...housemate gave the idea away after 5 celicas and he currently still owns 2 LOL

But, anyhow, best of luck lol :)

    Aw true?

what problems have caused you hell with them mate?

and oh tru, does he want to sell one? hahahaha

  3. If the engine is cactus and needs to be rebuilt it'd be cheaper for you to get another Celica. Or if you can do it yourself just a new engine and pop that in.

Yeah, it would be i dont think it is the engine runs quite well just thought i might get a test done jus to be safe then sorry

  4. Drop into supercheap/repco/autobarn/etc and ask for a compression tester.

With the engine up to temperature (and off) disconnect the spark plugs and remove 1 plug at a time. Connect the compression tester to where the spark plug was and crank the engine a couple times until the needle stops jumping on the tester. Move through the cylinders.

If there is more than a 15PSI difference between cylinders it isn't ideal. But the main thing is to check for a massive drop from what it should be. Ideal on that engine is 180+PSI, minimum is 140PSI.

Usual signs of low compression can be low power and/or high oil consumption.

Yeah will do thanks mate! as its done near 300000kms i think it would be ideal to check.

    if a cylinder is out,

it will need new pistons? or.. and is it best to do all 4 cylinders with new pistons or just the one that needs it. in my head it sounds smart to do all 4. haha

  5. Gday, if anyone knows what the compression of each cylinder of a 1990 celica SX (5sfe) would be great, my car is 293 xxxkms and i think it may be out on compression does anyone know any ways to tell by driving if the car may have loss of compression?

    any help would be sick

    :)

  6. Want to buy for 1990 Celica SX

    near new 4-1 extractors

near new 2 1/4 inch exhast system

    CAI

    possibly used

    1994-99 5sfe engine

    coilovers/ aftermarket springs

and if anyone has a rear sway bar and/or strut brace that will fit 1990 celica SX

i dont have much money as im trying to get my car fixed up read my post about my car if you dont understand long story short was ripped off, wasnt the car the guy said it was. so i dont have alot of cash left spent alot on repairs, so thought id jump on here see if someone could offer me these for cheap if they have them lying around so just throw some prices at me if you do

    Much apreciated. :)

  7. not sure but i think it should be like the others where u just push the whole unit forwards or backwards and it should clip out of place. maybe its caked with dust thats why it maybe abit hard to push out

Yeah thanks i got it :)

seemed to be glued in :/

  8. sub fan is on the other side of the radiator kinda weird setup, never knew i had one til a few months ago either only to find out ive been running the car 3 yrs without it cause the previous owner pulled out the wires, douche. haha

anyway glad to hear your not giving up on your car yet, they can be a bitch sometimes but you gotta love em.

Yeah, i need a new subfan relay but not paying 25$ from toyota for one. haha

yeah i loove the car but it has to go. Ive fixed it!

but i cant afford for anything else to go wrong so im going to get rid of it. :( i shall use the money to invest in a new one tho call me stupid but idc :)

  9. Keep a look out on this section as well :)

    Toyota's for sale

    thnx mate,

ive decided im not selling it, il fix it,

i need a few things steering rack pre sure ive got one now tho

new throttle cable, new leads and spark plugs new distributor and 2 fuses one for the ABS and one for the 'sub fan' no idea what tht is

ay help would be great on prices and performance wise?

  10. Ok hey, my current celica may need a steering rack done ive ran thicker fluid through but who knows how long it could hold for, im thinking of cutting my loses and purchasing a new one after selling this one, now im sure no one here would want to buy it but if ur interested, i have many reciepts for work and repairs its a great car i just dont have the cash to replace a steering rack any legit offers considered,

But i would like a new celica, preferably one with less then 280 thousand Ks, and running well has no problems, or may have a rebuilt engine 1992 SX up wouldnt mind a quad light one :) if anyone is selling one id love to have a look and is close buy obvs, im from Newcastle so please let me know,

another question where could i find a celica with a 3Sge i heard they came out with them standard

Please anyone that can help :) would be great.

  11. ive read that in some countries they are speed/rev limited to 4grand in 5th gear or somthing this means there limited in terms of power. i researched but cant find anything on if they are in Aus or not i was just wondering is that id like to get the most out of this car and if its limited would this affect acceleration and what not. like i know where it redlines is revlimited to protect th engine ive been reading things about it limited to beofre the redline.

I can confirm from experience that these cars are not limited in any gear (other than the 6300rpm normal rev limit)

okay well tht solves tht questions thnx heaps :)

also the redline is at 6150. what happened when yu pushed it to the 6300? because ive pushed it to 5900 and by then the engine is screaming along haha

It screams and does not make any power. There is NO point in going over 5400rpm as they stop making power after that.

    yeah thought as much :)

nah i limit it to about 5500 at best. ive discovered myself it stop pulling at about 5500 or there abouts :)

also whats the top speed like

just out of curiosity. as im only an L plater. the fastest ive driven it was 115 i think and figured from the tacho and gear itd pull maybe 180-200 flat out. but ehh top speeds a nothing thing. im more for the corners :)

  14. Hey uhh just a quick question are the Australian 1990 Celica SX's Rev limited? and if so how would i remove it? would i buy an aftermarket ECU and how much and where would i get one cheers guys.

they are limited to 6300 RPM, the 5SFE (engine in your car) will NOT rev much over this without causing significant damage.

The rev limit is there for a reason, while possible to remove it with an aftermarket ECU, this would be a VERY VERY bad idea.

so they dont valve bounce until 6300 or what happens personally i dont push my car over 5500 as 5400 is where the peak power is at.

but dude youve been a great help thnx (:

tho there not limited in terms of power like in the states.

  17. We have a few Celica Guru's here that should be able to help you out.....

Whats your opinion on the 90 model Celica you drive?

Alright thats what im on here for :) thanks

and my opinion is for a first car its great, seems to handle tight. not so good for stright out speed like just under 60 in 1st at 6000rpm. (NEVER PUSH MY CAR TO REDLINE) then 95 at second. its not too bad. alot of room in the boot for a small car gear box is nice in them i havnt driven alot of cars to compare it to but all toyotas are very reliable but overall its a great car designed for corners :)

    whats yours like :)

  18. hey mate, welcome to the club.

It is unfortunate you got a bit of a lemon with the purchase, but i guess you live and learn.

I would say the hesitation below 3500rpm is your timing, it could be too far retarded at the dizzy, or could be one tooth out on the cam pulley.

Try setting the dizzy a little more advanced, you can run about 15deg BTDC safely (always use 98 octane fuel though)

Your injectors may be dirty, you could try some fuel additive injector cleaner, or remove them and have them cleaned and flow-tested.

In terms of performance, you can do the standard Intake-Headers-Exhaust combo to help the 5s breathe easier.

AFAIK in QLD at least a 3SGE would be a legal swap for a p-plater, however i am not sure if this applies elsewhere, but to be honest it will be more work than it is worth.

as for going RWD, while possible (anything is with enough cash) it would be a stupid and very expensive idea, the car has no provisions at the back for a diff, etc.

It IS possible to convert a GT4 to RWD (it's been done) however this is still VERY expensive.

also with the RWD conversion i knew it would be dumb and far out of my league. i was just curious. lol

Yeah the guy was a slack selling it to a person who i said has limited funds and a first car. also the blue slip guy was a mate of his, we are gathering reciepts and written statements from mechanics and putting him to the RTA and hopefully hel be slapped in NSW with a 25k fine and a loss of licence to blue slip. you sure do never look back

alright thanks mate very much appreciate your input (: il make sure i tell the mechanic. as i dont have a timing gun. i read that 15-16deg BTDC is perfect for the celica. 10s factory below is retard and what not.

yeah you are probably right, il do that first if not. il get the ijnectors checked. as for the 98 octane nothing less goes in it haha.

what would you recomend for head, and diameter/type of exhast and i was told that 4-2-1 is good. as for intake to the bumper sort?

and yes tried the injector cleaner finished the bottle today actually.

    Thanks again mate!!!

  20. Ok, so thios is my first proper topic/post/thread whatever you would like to call it.

as you can see i only joined today, and yes im 17 yes i dont even have my Ps yet and yes im a newbi but would appreciate some help and or suggestions!

So last september, i bought my car a 1990 toyota celica SX from a private sale 40 mins from where i live. the add stated it had no RWC but could pass blue slip easily also said it had log books and service records and reciepts for re balanced crank and a reconditioned engine. also had replced all engoine mounts new timing belt. He spun the 3rd bearing in the gearbox in 3rd gear he had that done and receipts for it. went down to see it nice looking car NO rust at all NONE now i live on the coast so tht was odd looked after i thought. had scratches on the front bumper and what not a chip on the light and a few dings nothing major. he wanted 1700 dollers no less i said fine il pay you 1700 if you can supply a blue slip he aid thats fine. soo the next week i went down to pick it up he couldnt find any recpeits. nor service manuals. Also found out he re did the crank himself. and a gearbox place did the gearbox and clutch soo i rang them to verify they said yes we remeber the car. So on that note i wrote a reciept out that made clear this car should majke me homee and have no unblance in the crank if so a full refund was to be given he agreed i thought happy days.

THIT however began a 3 month stretch of mnay problems. Firstly i i notic its pulling a nit to the left and slowly gets worse along the way home no unbalance in the crank tho even up to and over 4500 rpm soo i decided to take it to my mechanic who had a look over it when i returned he said the guy who blueslipedd it COULD NOT have had it on a hoist the was fluid dripping and gushing out everywhere The sterring rack leaked badly, the was an oil leak that had ROTTED the uppercontrol arm bushes on the left hand side they were not there at all. there was a stripped wheel nut that i failed to notice dont know how as i was inspecting the break rotors. there was a cracked bottom engine mount. there wheels where out of allingment, the rear sway bar was BROKEN and barely held by a crappy weld job he tried to ( welding does not stick to that sort of tensile metal) there was a major exhast leak from the head stud. the water pump was spewing out water the radiotora was cracked many of these an instant FAIL on a blue slip. Me being a silly 17 year old thought 1700 dollers blue slip GREAT car

dont get me wrong it had a immaculate body excluding the dings up front but no rust straight.

so after 2300$ its actualy roadworthy now. and will pass a pinkslip the exhast will need to be replaced before the pinkslip however the sterring rack on the other hand we ran thicker fluid through as it was only 200$ as apposed to 1700 for a new rack. As im out of money pretty much and have spent too much i would like to sell it and buy a 1993 celica but i dont think id get much for my current one. and its hard to find spare parts or a new 5sfe engine with low Ks and is cheap/free.

my mechanic did a great job if your from newcastle hit up belvue motors in sandgate hes a top bloke.

there are a few more problems tho i would like some help with,

before the car went in the mechanic to be repaired it had alot of power below 3500 rpm very quick off the mark ever since he redid the timing belt (again needed doing) its been very sluggish and sloppy below 3500 like ul put ur foot down a little and itl rev then lurch then somewhat die then lurch again til it reaches 3500 rpm and thn all of a sudden take off. te only thing i can think off is timing maybe it was set to advanced before then after it was set to factoy i thought it was set to low retarded a little. got him to recheack he tells me it has good vaccum and is perfect. maybe needs to be set to advanced, also i read that ignition via the distributor cap method timing may be the cause im not sure if there the same thing tho.

a mate said it may be injectors. as his pop had the same problem his injectors where in need of being replaced soo any help would be much apprecitated. its done 293000kms

another thing. being on my Ps there not much i can do in terms of performance

what are some cheap things i could do to improve handling and performance if you could post links would be great or some tips (:

also would i be able to do a engine swap to a 3sge because ive read celica came out with tht engine would the mountings match up and would it be a stright swap? or would be very lenghty process would this be legal for a P plater?

anyother tips i should know would be great or anyone that would like to help

please no comments telling me how silly/ stupid this buy was no one could tell me other wise i wanted tht car, i know how stupid it was and regret it very much but i made a choice il live with it even if it does cost me a lot a of money that i dont have.

alos dumb question but whats the easiest cheapest way to do a rwd conversion just for my own interest.
