  1. Happens when you run low on oil or don't change oil regularly.

Your valve clearance is off and may require adjustment. Also, you may need new tensioner pulley. Running thicker oil is quieten the noise down a bit.

Yeah the services were done on time up until it was traded (around october last year) I don't want to run thicker oil to mask it I would rather fix it for the piece of mind.

Whatever you do, don't run engine cleaner. It will make it even worst.

  2. Good job Bill... I'm going to refer all those that want to turbo their 2zz to this thread.

I have a little bit info for those that want to turbo their 2zz corolla/celica without opening the engine/gearbox since I've been through that stage and pushing where most wouldn't. So this might be a good indication for those "extreme" cases.

Cost-wise: Around the same as Bill has mentioned minus the engine internals parts (roughly 10-12k).

Power-wise: Will be determine on how much you want to spend, and how much you can afford to spend when things go wrong. Anything from 140-200kw is possible (if your looking to make less than 140, think about s/c).

I'm pushing the 2zz-ge to it's limits, and the majority of built 2zz boys (smaay, boosted etc.) say it's not safe. It isn't. Safe power-level are discussed in the link bill posted (keeping in mind USA dyno read higher than Aus dyno's).

But I believe the 2zz-ge is a decent engine, it just depends on how well your setup is which will determine it's life, which means $$$. My setup is a little bit overkill, but it makes running this much power possible and "safe". Last dyno'd the celica was making 206kw atw - 12.8@114mph. Been running at this power level for about a year. Before that the celica was putting 180kw atw - 13.2 @ 106mph for nearly a year.

So it's possible to have "power". Every bit adds up in the hunt for power... I wouldn't even think to push the engine if it didn't have a "good quality" setup. Be prepared to check/maintain the engine on a weekly basis, chuck it on dyno to check fuel/knock levels regularly etc.

My opinion is to set a goal. And seek out a turbo that can do that comfortably at relatively low boost levels. And do that at lowest boost pressure possible. ie. Have all supporting mods that aid in making the power easily: free-flowing exhaust, standalone ecu, larger injectors.. If your just searching for 160kw then a GT2871r would be ideal. 200kw+ Gt3071r/GT30r... And then you'll have room to move when you build the engine, which will definately be required down the track.

Last... Research. I asked Bill alot of questions before I started my build. Thanks Bill!!

  3. Thanks Ray Rei for bringing out the cars on such short notice.. Hope you didn't drop too much of your dinner. :P
hahaha well i wasnt told til my other mates were like oi ray nebo run im like WAHhhhh??? oh ok :) far out my mates celica sounded so nice :)

It sure did. Sweet sound when it hit lift as well. But DAMN that MR-S was phat (literally).

Lift? What lift? Cheers guys.. It's stock.. Honest. But... I haven't felt lift in about 2 yrs.

Ray Rei.. Your invited to our Nebo runs from now on. :toast: Made me have to actually get up and go. Last person to suprise me that much was Peter.... damn fast bastards.. :whistling:

Jimmy you always chickened out on nebo runs when Sportivo's dominated the landscape back in the day. :P Always had "something else to do" lol

Apart from North's commodore the quickest thing I have been in up Nebo was his sportivo closely followed by mine. I am a lil more sympathetic on the machinery than North LOL

Next week we could do a cruise to a certain "new car wash" that has just opened and is all lit up at night. You can even use you own stuff if you want to. If there is enough interest I will even be there to give tips on cleaning a car properly :toast:

Of course.. My car is too slow to go up with the stivo. I only go up with family cars like aurion, integra, lancers and silvias... My car is stock afterall...

Where were you guys last night? Made me feel like such an oldie with the new group.

Maybe we should do another run.. Enlighten me on how fast you guys are. As long as I get to stick out the back, don't want to hold you guys back. We should get Pippy, Wei wei and all the old boys to do old school run..

HAHAHAHAHAHA good to see your still alive Jimmy!! Old school meet would be a bit of a blast from the past that's for sure!! Would be a great mix of cars I tell you. I might get something organsied shortly stay tuned.....

As for the car wash i used it last night and the lighting is really good!! My boss is more than happy for you guys to bring your own stuff to wash(car wash etc etc) the facilities are there to be utilised so we might make this a regular thing. Might even make a good back drop for the photo snappers.....

Keep me updated.. You know I don't troll the forums much anymore..

  6. jimmy can u explain where ur air filter is situated in this setup ? is it pretty much wedged onto the side of the turbo facing the wheel arch ? u got any under car pics to see the setup on the car ? more than just an open bonnet shot

Yeh.. Unfortunately it's sitting on the turbo with the space available for the celica. About 1cm from the chassis.

Should be different story on the stivo if you went similar setup. You could probably route some piping so air filter sits in box. But that's not a problem in QLD because it's legal as long as it's secure.

    I'll send you some pics.

thought about selling the car with the kit?

Not really.. The parts on my car are worth more than the car itself.

Plus I already tried.. Noone was interested in something not so streetable.

  8. If you don't want to go online, your pretty much out of luck. Unfortunately your not going to find many aftermarket parts for celica in a shop and in stock.

You can probably go into your local automotive / bodykit shop and ask them to order in the parts, but they will cost alot more than what you could buy them online.

    What's wrong with buying online?

  10. When they said the C series gearbox was weak, I didn't realize it was THAT weak....

    Hmmm .... <_<

Bill, what gearbox issues are you experiencing? You took it apart a fair few times??

They arent that weak, this car is pushing out a fair bit of power, and it takes a fair few hits on the rough road in Canberra.

Bill's putting out way too much power into his box and it keeps munching it. Although not exactly sure what fails first in his case...

the box itself isnt weak guni ..... if u treat it right then it will be fine ..... my box lasted approx 6 yrs with no probs - 4yrs n/a and 2 yrs forced ..... it saw the 1/4 atleast 30 times n/a and 10 times forced and when it was forced i was running 225 drag radials so there is some added stress ;) ...... did a crap load of mountain runs ..... so i have put it through its paces ..... but i didnt abuse it ..... there is a difference between driving hard and full all out abuse .... hard launching off the lights and chirping 2nds everywhere ofcourse the thing isnt gonna last under that abuse ..... i dont think any gearbox will .....

as MT stated im simply putting out too much power ...... and in the end 3rd gear gave up ...... all other gears are still in pretty good nick except being that 3rd is the gear where i get my power to the ground it was copping the biggest hiding ....... and in the end it lost half its teeth simply putting along ...... lol

SD ..... mate that box is worth over $15k ...... u might as well talk to PPG or PAR at that price and support aussie built ;)

    x2...

The box isn't that weak. I'm on the same boat as Bill. I've had my car since 2003, and I regularly take it down the 1/4 and do mountain runs once sometimes twice a week. Plus regular abuse on the streets back when street scene was big. And I'm still on my first box, although it's now on it's last legs (mostly because I learnt how to race a manual properly in this car).

I think it all comes down to what you do to it. Wheel hop, smashing gears, "bad" clutch, slicks, solid engine mounts, bad oil etc all help send the box into retirement sooner.

  11. a guy in brisbane had it done to his 2zz celica, sounded like pure sh|t! would be ok if it was a race car and u were in lift the whole time it would be great but for normal driving its just horrible! and unless your car looks jdm as f*ck or fresh off the track everyone will be like look at the toss! it soulds ok on blown 2L's but na's dont

if u really wanna experience it, unbolt the flange now and take it for a drive u will change your mind

You talking about me? I'm one of the first guy in Brisbane/Aust that did it to my celica. And I absolutely loved it. Power wise, never dyno'd but it ran 14.4sec 1/4mile with just intake and no exhaust.

Ok, the celica and corolla are different cars, so the exhaust section is different so I can't comment on the sound or power gains. But on the celica, it was actually quieter than most custom 2.5" exhaust, sound better (I've been through 5 different setup when n/a) and went faster.

And I don't get how everyone on here can say it's HIGHLY ILLEGAL. The cat is still in place, there's a straight pipe going out back, only defect you can get is for noise. Big whoop... And I'm sure most corolla with cannons on here are "HIGHLY ILLEGAL" too.

Sounds much better in person, high revving fun!!!

no not you. its a guy with a red celica.

    Hahahaha.. NOPIG?

He's always had an exhaust. It's one of my old exhaust and it's damn loud.

The other red celica that run no exhaust only did so for a day I'm pretty sure until he got defected. $75 bucks and that's it.
