  1. do keep in mind when stiffning suspension and handling its putting more of the force in your tyres. so expect more wear on tyres when driving it hard. It might not seem much going around the corner at 60 and its comfortable but your tyres are getting a hammering.

    :)

I disagree.... when the chassis is set up correctly, it puts less strain on the tyres as the chassis is doing the cornering rather than relying purely on the grip of the tyres. The tyre sits flatter on the road under hard cornering and so wears lesson the shoulder. Any extra tyre wear will be from you hitting corners harder.... cause you can :D

  2. if you worry bout all the legalities all the time you never have any fun :P

Nice in theory, but when you have lost your license for 12 months for a safe overtake in the country, had your car impounded for 2 months before the cops realised the engine wasnt stolen and said "sorry about that", had yellow canaries for the car being 9mm too low because you had several hunded kilos of stuff in the boot and back seat.....

I could go on and on and on....

I would rather the fun without the hassles. I've just had enough of cops.

I prefer to tell a cop to f@#k off as everything is perfectly legal, when he goes over the car looking to book you for anything he can. He can use someone else to prop us his quota.

    Me Disgruntled?... never! ;)

  3. WHAT?!?!?! wat did u say ....i cant hear u !!!! hahahaha  :P  :P  :P

    ITS LOUUUUD!!!!!!!!  :D

highly doubt itll be legal in LIFT but under lift n cruising should be OK i think  B)

    450 sounds bout right  :)

hmmm... I spent year with a 3" exhaust that was about 98db... Spent years in and out of the EPA as well.... he he

It only needs to be 90db or under at 4000prm.

One thing i want is all modifications to be 100% legal... inlcuding EPA.

Doesnt sound like this one is...

  4. I picked up almost 6kw atw with my magnaflow...

This is the magnaflow details that I gave you Davin :)

This is the one that used to be on shaos car then northy transplanted onto the 1zz :D

Awesome... what is the noise like?

Do you know if it is EPA legal (noise)

$450 installed... does that sound about right?

  5. Hey Guys

Ok... I have the CAi and love it, but I am in 2 minds regarding whether to put on a Muffler. I am looking at a magnaflow muffler.

I do realise that the full CES system is very good but I just dont want to spend that much, so it's a choice of a mgnaflow or keep the stock muffler.

My question is, are there significant gains to be made with just a mufler or does it just make the car louder?

I am not after a loud car and really after good value for money mods.

If there are gains, any idea how many kws I could expect?

Anyone tested before or after on a Dyno?

    Thanks guys

  6. Hi all,

Ok I'm really concerned about my car's performance lately. Some time ago I realated an experience about a friend's Honda accord Sir-T that pulled on me in 3rd gear. I dissmissed the beating thinking that he ought to win because of his 2 litre displacement advantage not to mention he had intake, exhaust and minor tuning. I only have on a TRD CAI. However on a rematch done after doing the coolant bypass mod, tightening my throttle cable and washing my filter pod, I still gained no ground, therefore I concluded that vtec is just stronger.

Now my latest concerns involve a friend of mine who just bought his 2001 RunX yesterday. We went out for some benchmarking a few hours ago. His car is bone stock. He gave me the keys so I could give him my impressions on it since I've had mine for a year. First thing, I almost ran off the road shifting from 1st -2nd gear. Believe it or not, his car lands in lift effortlessly . I didn't expect this so the torque steer surprised me. It was an ubelievable feeling hitting lift at will from 1st-2nd gear. His car had a much smoother acceleration and you barely felt Lift. It just got faster toward the redline, no kick at 6200rpm. I must say again that I hit 6400rpm shifting from 1-2  .

Anyway I felt confident that my 9+whp difference from my CAI, my Coolant bypass mod, throttle cable mod and plain experience would cause me to beat his car in a head to head matchup. He didn't feel up to it so he gave the car to our mutual friend who drives the SIR-T... yes a Honda guy, using lift for the first time.

Now here is the confusing part. I move off and take the lead as we look for a clear stretch, but as we get onto the Highway I notice him gaining on me. At one stage he was locked on my rear fender and I couldn't pull away. We decided to do a side by side run and sure enough in 3rd gear he started to drift slowly away. There is nothing I could do. I had no avantage. Even the driver of the SIR-T said afterwards that he had much difficulty beating this stock RunX and infact could not complete an overtake.

I am in disbelief. What about all my mods? Should'nt I have pulled away? The difference appeared during 3rd-4th gear as in thhe run with the SIR-T. Does this mean my car has top-end problems? Shouldn't my CAI give me the advantage in top-end? I got my car serviced 2 months ago and t was declared healthy. Why am I losing ground in higher gears? Are my 17" OZ rims slowing me down? He had on 15" rims, did those give him an advantage? What is going on?

    IS MY CAR GETTING SLOWER??

    Excuse my ignorance but...

What exactly is the coolant bypass mod and the throttle cable mod and how do these increase performance?

  7. Glad to hear another happy TRD CAI owner is here. Now for that LSD ;)

    Hey Sads,

you up for an LSD group buy?

DON'T TEMPT ME LIKE THIS WHEN I'VE ALREADY GOT SOOOO MANY OTHER THINGS I'M SAVING FOR...:angry::angry::angry::angry:

You guys are bad for my bank balance, well good for a while, but those mass withdrawls hurt... :(

So i guess you dont want to know that it's the best MOD i have made so far.....

Ok... i wont tell you then... ;)

    AHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    DON'T TELL ME THAT!!!!!

    lalalalalalalalalalalalalalala

    not listening

    lalalalalalalalalalalalalalala

I really want it for track days and is next on my list after rims/tyres, CAI and exhaust, but is looking like it's a year away at best.

If you want it specifically for track days, IMHO it will make more of a difference to your track times than the CAi and exhaust....

But you arent listening anyway... he he

  9. If you are changing the springs and not the shocks, then just remember, the lowered springs will put more strain on the original components. Your shock absorbers will not last as long and in some cases can have a negative effect on cornering.

I remember back in 1999, whiteline tested a WRX standard compared with low springs around Winton and the lowered WRX was slower. Its not the case with all cars but something to consider.

Shock absorbers make more of a difference to your cars cornering abilities than springs... but shocks wont give you that cool lowered stance B)

  10. Hey guys

On Saturday I installed the TRD CAI...

Woo hoo... how good is that induction sound! :D

it was a very stressful 3 hours, especially since the TRD instructions bear very little relevance to the OZ model.

Want to send a very very big thankyou to Danthuyer for his help and phone calls on Saturday. Without his help I would still be there tearing my hair out.

The 2zz sounds like a bloody F1 engine once it hits lift (exaggerating i know). People turn aound and look, and my exhaust is stock! Even put a smile on my girlfriend when she heard it.

    <_< ;) :) :D B)

  11. oo.. i see... wow...  this is a private track day. so now its semi slicks all round, slotted dics and good pads

    $170 x 4 = 680 (tyres)

    Discs = ?

    Pads = ?

    wow expensive......

If you wanted to go down that path...

Run your street tyres or run 4 x semi slicks, not both.

Word of warning though, street tyres are made for the street, not for the track and you can easily round the shoulders in hard cornering. SomeThing like the Dunlop D01J semi slick is designed for the track and will last far longer than your street tyres. My first time out on a open track day, i ruined 4 x street tyres, cost me a fortune to replace the next day as i had rounded the shoulders so badly.

Got some track tyres specifically for the track and never had a problem again.

The better the pad, the more fade resistant which is your worst enemy on a track, but the harsher they are on discs. You can use the standard discs with an aggressive pad and get good bite and fade resistance, but more wear on the discs.

You could save your money and use standard pads, but you will spend more time off the track waiting for them to cool down.

Dont get sucked into marketing hype either of a good track pad with low wear, they dont exist....

As for low dust pads, dont get me started :-)

My comment on te discs were only if you were going to replace them.

Expensive... yes. motorsport is very expensive.

I am just offering my advice of doing years of track days... Its free if you want to use any of it.

  12. wat do u mean that the semis will throw my grip off balance?  so u think that semis all-round will even it out? its just a day out on to the track

i would like to noe, who uses wat rotor with wat pad? from DBA they only offer gold slotted rotors, i think....

BTW... my rims are black so it doesnt matter if theres dust.....

I used to do a bit of track work when i raced the Sti...

Pippy is dead right... Use the same tyre all round. One day on a track is all it takes to KILL YOURSELF!

Sorry but its true. Motorsport is VERY dangerous and car balance will mean as much to your lap times and safety as the motor or brakes will.

If you want to get out there, spend the money on some semi slicks (be careful when they are cold though), good brake pads (Hawks or Pagid, never liked EBC's, personal opinion), some good slotted discs (not drilled) and a good helmet (the better the helmet, the more chance of not dying).

If you are doing a cams day with a club then you will also need:

Some tape for your front lights, a secondary bonnet strap and if you can afford it, a 3 point harness. Some clubs enforce the harness, others dont. You will also have to have a fir extinguisher within reach of the driver (you should have this anyway)

Seriously guys, i have seen some really bad stuff on the track. I have seen some very very good drivers make a tiny mistake and have been lucky to leave the track alive. I cant stress enough how important safety and the right equipment is.

  13. I was wondering has anyone tried using the over drive function on the 1zzfe?? i can feel the exra push when it is being used, but does it do damage or put extra strain on the car??? or should it on;y be used for short bursts????

    holla back all

:P  I got Blue interior Neons light and LED's hehe looks nice......

huh? You can drive all day, every day in overdrive, will save you on fuel, but make it more sluggish to drive. Its just a transmission settign to save fuel.

The Overdrive in the camry is on from when you start the car, you have to push the button to turn it off.

  14. To get a lot better braking, you have to spend a lot more $$$$

My next upgrade.... 6 pot AP racing calipers left over from my old track car...

    Yeah baby ! Yeah !

Bigger Rotors + Multipiston calipers is the ******* = Big $$$$$.

Lots of places sell them in the U.S. but their Rollas have 5 stud hubs not 4.

the rotors are 330mm and 2 piece. I have to get a custom hat, bracket and spacer made up to fit the Stivo. I also had to get 17" rims for them to fit under.. will look nuts when they are on.

I am alos looking to see if i can swap the fronts to the rears....

    Shold stop on a dime!

where can i get it in Australia? also, would our sport rolla brake kit would be fit on standard rolla? because i have a friend may want to buy the standard rolla (modified with turbo), if we can buy 2 sets, i think it wuold be cheaper.

    cheers

    TRD

If you are in Melbourne, Race brakes in north Mlebourne is the only place to go for brakes. They are by far the best and most experienced in perfromance brakes.

They have been doing race cars for many years and great to deal with. Howard knows his stuff.

6 pot brakes and rotors will set you back 5-6 grand though... it's not cheap!

  16. At the recent CES dyno day/show'n'shine, a stock sportivo put out more power than Craig's unichipped sportivo... quite strange.

That doesn't surprise me... often how the engine has been run in, how many kms the engine has done and other factors can greatly influence the power output of any car...

That is why all unichip installers give you a "before" and "after" dyno graph so you can see exactly what power you have gained.

I am guessing that Craig's sportivo would have been well down on power before the unichip if that was the case.

A good tuner can also greatly improve the drivability and responsiveness of the car. Something a dyno will never give you.

Would be great to be able to put a car on a dyno befreo you bought it.... then you could just keep going until you found a "good one".

  17. Hey gipper,

how much did the LSD set u back and how much to install ?

Also from piggyback systems the best one thus far has been the unichip which is why several members have them. The only thing being that u will need a retune after u do a performance mod if u want full/optimum performance from ur mod..... but i get this would be the same for a full independant system

oh n welcome to the forum where u from ?

The LSD was a bit over a grand and the installation was a bit under a grand.

I got it installed at toyota and they said they had to replace a few parts which get broken during the installation. They replaced those parts under warrantly... very nice guys.

I have used unichips in my last 2 cars, and my entire family have them...(yes even my Mum in her twin turbo Subaru B4.. he he). Others might be better for getting more power but reliability of the chip and the support and professionalism of the tuner is my first priority. Unicuip have a very good dealer network in Oz and have been around a long time.

Think I will stick with them.

Can i get some comments from Sportivo owners who have installed a unichip?

    Their thoughts, comments?

I am from the Eastern Suburbs of Melbourne....

Thanks for the welcome, always nice when you are new to a group.

  18. hey guys. i have a question with our current rolla. what will you guys do to upgrade the brake system? i have changed the EBC greenStuff brake pads. i feels just have a little better feeling  when i stop the car. be frank, it is better than standard but it didn't meet my expectation  . anyone give me the comment? if you can tell me the parts that i can use and get in Aus, it would be the best.

    thanks

    TRD

The only real way of getting significantly better braking is to increase the braking surface area. This means increasing the size of the caliper and rotor.

You can get a lot more agressive pad which will give you better bite but will chew through your rotors in no time.

You can go for small modifications like get good 2 piece rotors with better heat dissapation. Grooved rotors for better outgassing and high quality brake fluid and braded lines for better feel, but all of these are only minor increases over standard. They can however give you better fade resistance.

To get a lot better braking, you have to spend a lot more $$$$

  19. also ive got a magnaflow titanium cannon muffler gives a fair increase of midrange power.with the silencer in its sounds great and no drone and possibly just on or over 90db with the silencer off its sounds off tap but get shocking drone at certain rev ranges.

That sounds like a great idea... looks good too.

Can i ask what is cost?

ou may have just answered my question as to what muffler to get!

any hi flow one will do. I have great love for Apexi WS. Or you can try mugen loop style X-Force muffler. It performed better than Mugen and that is not something I made up.

What is the cost of the Jap ones with Silencer compared to the Magnaflow?

  21. Hi Guys

    ok.. first official post.

Bought a black 03 Stivo a month ago after going from a heavily modified STi.

Small change, but financial responsibility has caught up with me.

Have changed the handling with Koni/whiteline and 17" wheels

    also had a LSD installed.

I have ordered a CAI and looking at a magnaflow muffler (If i can find one with sufficient flow but without the drone) to improve power and drivability.

I was wondering what people's experience with a piggyback chip (unichip) with the above mods.  With a turbo car the chip has a huge gain with its ability to control boost, but I am not sure with a NA car like the stivo.

In the graph below, it looks like you can get some gains but are they worth the $1000 for the chip.  Any real world experience would be great.

    Gipper

    which LSD did you installed?

Installed the TRD LSD... works great.. heaps more grip and power down out of corners with no wheel spin. Best mod yet
