  1. Well I did some testing today! and the FJ on BP Ultimate is officially faster than my old Kluger :) :) :)

I did 3 back to back runs of 7.06 seconds 0-100kmh, 7.31 seconds (wheel spin! @ start TOO EXCITED) and finally on my last run 6.96 seconds!!!!!!!!!!! all photo proof below.

Comparison to other best accel run at same weight spec, more power = more acceleration :) this is as a result of the tweaks I did to the MAF and trimming out the AFR @ full load.

The beast is showing 185rwkw!!! on my measure

    Test condition 12pm

    11 deg C (Ambient)

17 to 20 deg C air box temp (all three 0-100kmh tests)

~15 to 17lt of fuel in tank (min weight spec test)

I will from this base line put in the United 100 octane fuel and run at the same weight and weather and location and see the difference and post back as promised :)

  2. There is a real simple fix to this and it involves a little simple technique:

(Note: even my 2011 FJ Cruiser can sometimes have a small grinding noise for a nano second as listed in the linked thread)

Instead of turning off your engine at idle speed of 750rpm odd you simply lift up the engine revs to 2000rpm for 1 second and then while at 2000rpm turn off the ignition!

What happens is more than double the oil pressure is present and a lot more oil is forced into and around the VVTi mechanism. After adopting this shut down method I for over a week of daily driving have not herd ANY type of odd noise on a cold start of the engine, even after sitting for multiple days.

Try it! It does work and for sure keeps more oil in the upper end of the motor.

  3. So I have experimented a few tank fulls using the 100 octane (United) 10% Ethanol fuel, and there for sure is a difference in the Air Fuel Ratio at full power (to the better) and a corresponding increase in engine performance (seat of pants to date testing). I ran this fuel when I was up in the snow @ the camping trip photo's and it seems to work o.k.

I checked the Toyota engine specs for the 2011 and the motors parts and fuel system are engineered to run up to E20 blended fuel (higher base fuel pressure) RICH base tuning! as I have documented already and also different plastic fuel rail, pressure regulator treatments and for the damper to make them tollerant to ethanol mixes of fuels.

I'll refill with this stuff on my next tank full and redo the 0-100kmh test and rwkw output and see what the actual increase in performance is and post up here when done *couple of weeks*.

  4. Thanks Boleh,

My whole adult life has been around performance cars, so have learned a thing or two in the last 22 years :)

I might go test drive one of those 86's, but really I already have one sports car, and the FJ fits all other requirements. Best thing I love about my FJ is that people really are in shock when they hear it blast past them like they are standing still.............. it has so much character and presence ! *and performance*

  5. Wow, thats still great. Thats as much as a Skyline GTR, with more bottom end..

    It pulls real hard!

I have and do lots of tuning to all kinds of cars. One example is a twin turbo RX7 fitted with PFC and exhaust system and running 13psi boost and these do 180rwkw on my system (on a dynodynamics they will show 230rwkw!!!!).

I measure the power properly far less optimistic/exagerated than what people get on most Australian chassis dyno's.

Either way the certified performance separates the fact from fiction.

And my RICEFJ consistently pulls 0-100kmh in 7.1 to 7.2 second range, for 2050kg as tested 4WD that is insane :)

  6. Seiko are the best watch maker on earth croco ;) you will never go wrong with them.

The ones I have make a Rolex Daytona look like a piece of over hyped garbage (similar to European cars v's Japanese ones *familiar story*), should do for the price, those two Grand Seiko's above would pay for half a new Kluger Grande lol........

  7. Hi guys,

That noise your hearing on your cars are what we refer to as " vvti rattle".

It doesn't happen to all 2GR motors. With the ones that has that problem we simply drop the motor and replace both intake vvti controllers with a revised unit.

I've only ever replaced them under warranty but I'd imagine it would be quite costly to do as a retail job since the motor has to come out.

    Hope that helps guys

This is why I was never totally happy with the Kluger, the motor is just in the plain wrong orientation ! the FJ is worth it just for the North South engine "proper" configuration :) You can do allot to the donk with it still in the car :)

  8. Barney thats brilliant, I reckon yours is the best economy that I have read so far on this thread and I reckon it would be hard to beat, I dont think anyone has got as good as economy as you, we should se if any one can match it or beat , but I would doubt anyone could, the best I have acheived is 7.5L100 and thats going down the blue mountains beetween 75 to 80kmh with the missus and my self and one suit case.

BP ultimate is all I use in the kluger , I swear by it, the car runs smoother and idles smoother and revs out better.

The kluger is absolute surprise package with fuel economy conserned, I went with a mate to sydney, he took his ra4 4cylinder, I took my kluger, we both drove the same distance and same speed and same route I followed him all the way, we both filled our fuel tanks up at the same time before we left and filled up before we left and my kluger used less fuel than the rav4, we swapped cars, he drove the kluger for a while and I drove the rav4, I certainly wont be swapping the rav4 for the kluger any time soon, I didnt exspect it to go as well as the kluger being a 4 cylinder, but once you jump into another car you realize how well the klugers 3.5v6 actually go, the ra4 didnt like climbing the mountains with all rugrats and all gear we had and my mate left me for dead going up the mountains driving my kluger and especially overtaking, I nearly didnt make around a semi overtaking I didnt think it would take that long to overtake, I had to wrestle my mate to get my keys off him, he thinking of buying a kluger now, I have never owned a car that delivers that kind of power and economy, the closest car matching the kluger would have to be the prado, it delivered outstanding economy for a 4wd, I could average the late 9s early 10s on a trip and around town 12 and 13 L100, the kluger can average under 9L100 on a trip easly and the most mine it will use around town is 12L100, those v6 vvti engines rule, my love affair with toyota v6 engines will continue in the future, it will be a sad day when they stop building them, bugger the oil burners, let them power a tractor, give me petrol v6 muscle any time.

You just can not make this sh7t up :)

These are the greatest motors on earth I say, bang for buck, and performance with economy, it's gag factor good!

  9. That note on your FJ sounds so good Peter. The exhaust you fitted looks like a peice of art.

I would not bother putting a stereo in a car that sounded that good!!! B)

I very rarely drive with the CD or USB tunes going, I just wind down the window and give it some :)

p.s. It sounds much better in real life than on the video, EVERYONE looks when they hear it coming :) it has a real reasonant howl, combination of the intake modifications and the exhaust system.........

EDIT: I just put on my Sony mega headphones on my video of RICEFJ and if you have similar you will get a good feel for what it actually sounds like in real life (90% of the quality)

  10. That note on your FJ sounds so good Peter. The exhaust you fitted looks like a peice of art.

I would not bother putting a stereo in a car that sounded that good!!! B)

    Thanks mate,

I tell you EVERYDAY when I drive the beast I just have to use full throttle & 5500rpm at least once in my journey :)

It adds to the driving experience and this is part of the joy of owning a car, its not just a mode of transport A To B, for me its more than that, each time I get in a car I own I really want to be entertained by it. The V6 petrol motor in N/A for with my tweaks delivers :) that in ample spades, and she gets up and goes hard too, which is a real surprise to me *relatively speaking*.

The exhaust is EXCELLENT, and Ironically it was cheap too! I have had a long history with Automobiles and done all kinds of modifications to them and the exhaust area has always been a point of immense frustration to me in the Australian market, just too many Bong Brothers mig welded Lukey muffler mild steel sh7t heaps wannabe "system" experts that charge like a wounded bull and provide little more than what comes out the rear end of a Bull!!!!

By contrast to the mild steel mig welded pressure pack sprayed rubbish available at your local Australia "exhaust shop" The Megan Racing cat back performs as good as it looks :)

  11. I was not trying to offend Boleh. You had one instance of an odd noise and you label the car a piece of sh*t? That sort of indicated you had never had much experience with motor cars before. Sorry if I assumed wrong but when you give as little information as possible people are just left to assume.

Thinking back now to my 3 litre Camry V6 I do recall that a couple of times it did make a rattle sound when starting from a long spell. I put it down to the oil draining away from the top end workings and they were dry until some oil got pumped up into them?? I certainly did not rush out and call a tow truck.

At the couple of times it did happen I was using a cheap shell oil. Out current 4 cyl 07 camry makes a loud rattle for a second or two when started from cold. But back when we had two of them they both did it so thought it was the nature of the dog and nothing to worry about... which it is.

If you want to see what a real piece of sh*t motor car is do some reading here and be very grateful that you never bought one of these... (there are plenty of other enlightening stories in there on other cars as well. BTW.. you will not find one entry regarding Kluger... odd that?)

    http://www.google.co...tiva&gsc.page=1

    More here...

    http://www.notgooden...wforum.php?f=19

Its all good we are all friends here, I remember Boleh, when I signed up in 2008, I'm sure he is not offended as its just another internet forum at the end of the day :)

I think this rattle is common......... probably hahaha.

Either way totally agree with you if you want a piece of **** you should buy a Falcon or a Commonwhore LOL.................. now they are more Lemon than Lemon itself :) Head gasket anyone LOL!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  12. If you have ever owned another vehicle in your life you will know why I say that... .

Old mate.. No.. I've never owned another vehicle in my whole life. Prior to this kluger i rode on the back of an orang utan..

Although not a V6, its a muscular 6-pack.. Fed it bananas and grapes sometimes when i had spare cash. Served me great. Climbed up places where no 4WD ever could noe ever will. Died of old age and decided i needed something more boring

Don't worry too much about random comments on the internet mate.

For your problem, I'm sure my old Kluger did the same thing! When cold first starting it "sometimes" would make a grinding noise for a fraction of a seconds or sometimes a second, to me it sounded like the started motor was engaging lol..... I sold the car!

Ironically you can hear a similar thing on the FJ Cruiser engine too, it happens very rarely and only after the motor has sat for a while before you attempt to start it and only from cold.

It must be a characteristic of the VVTi system I say.

Might go see if I can buy another Ape and train him to carry me around :)

  13. Cheers mate.

When I was talking to the salesman the otherday at my local toyota dealer he said that theres a waiting list for the fj, he said there was six on the waiting list, yeah I had a bit of a look at cars sales site, OUCH! the price they wanted for them ,oh well that toyota quality comes at a price and the demand probadly outways the supply, because there only been out a short time.

They are the best 4WD/FUN SUV/Bargain on the market at any price I say........... I have not come across anyone who actually has one or driven one who does not love it. Everyday I look at mine and enjoy it as the first day I set eyes on it (very rare for any car to do that to me).

Really is a fun automobile #1

  14. I would love to see more of the fj videos, keep up the great work.

I cant remember, does the auto have manual shift like the kluger.

You can grab the stick and shift it through the gears, doing it this way uses the last couple of hundred rpm before the rev limiter, and since these motors keep making maximum power to red line it all helps acceleration when going for hollywood numbers.

There are other little tricks like turning off the traction and stability control (as documented when I tested the Kluger), same applies to the FJC.

I really do love the FJ! I was looking at carsales.com just now and people are selling them SH with up to 20,000km on them for the price I got mine brand new on the road! *I did get a o.k. deal though*...... very popular classic SUV it will be I have no doubt about it.

  15. For your Aural Stimulation............... can't beat a mildly tuned V6 for character OR performance.

7.26 seconds 0-100kmh, full tank, normal take off :)

I might test her again now that its a bit more run in and the weather is nice and cool, very sure on 1/4 tank fuel it would do a high 6 seconds 0-100kmh time , manual shifting the gearbox and "spooling it up a bit" before a take off.............

  16. I absolutly love those gtrs, the 3.8 twin turbo v6 engine in the gtr are different in every car , one gtr could develepe more power than another gtr of the same type, but saying that there one amazing car no car in the would for the money could come any near it for performance and handling and traction, I seen the guys on top gear put it through its paces especialy the stig, and its near the top of the leader board, it beats cars that are worth more than three times as much , GERMANS TAKE NOTE AND ALL THE BADGE SNOBS, you cant beat the japs at building cars for bangs for bucks, anyway I got that of my chest, I wonder anyone reading this is going to give me serve.

    The japs are engineering masters.

It's a bit like watches (my other hobby)

    Look up Grand Seiko.

    grand-seiko-spring-drive-chronograph-ad1.jpg

    grand-seiko-spring-drive-chronograph-watch-sbgc001.jpgspring-drive-9r86-movement.jpg

^ This one above is mine, Grand Seiko Spring Drive Chronograph, best mechanical watch on earth PERIOD! (All swiss parts shop bitza wannabe tennis endorsement badge whores eat a c0c3)

I have one that would and does sh7t on a Rolex from a massive height! Seiko were the first to invent the chronograph, first to invent many internal features, first to make an accurate mechanical watch cause the Swiss rating for accuracy (chronometer standard) was way too lax for Seiko's standards!!! LOL.. A Grand Seiko actually will keep time and last a long time unlike any Swiss garbage time piece....... I know cause I have owned all of them personally including Rolex's .......... Anyway my point is similar to cars a R35 GTR will run rings around a 458 Italia Ferrari and even Ferrari engineers cant work out how a GTR is so fast/efficient.

The japs are true engineers and pioneers of many things, watchs, cars, best 4WD's on earth.... I could go on and on.

Honda taught the world how to build a Formula one engine when they wiped the floor with their Turbo V6, punishing Porsche, Ferrari, Renault etc etc.

You just look at what our Klugers can do as I proved in this thread, great great cars, from the best manufacturing country on earth.

  17. Yep I know what you mean , I spent three days cleaning my prado after a weekend away on a fourwheel drive trip, it was absolute bugger lying underneath trying to get every bit of mud out, I dont know if you own one or not I found a great thing to clean in the chassis is a product I bought from my local arb dearler called a staun massojet, im not sure I spelt it correctly, my lowsy spelling, but they work a treat in cleaning every nook and cranny of your car, you can buy the cleaning products to go with them too, they have a little despencer that attaches to the end of it, you can also ajust how much dertergent comes out aswell. it was the best $120 I ever spent.

Yeah barney those vvti v6 engines are bloody fantastic on fuel,I love the look on my mates face when I told him how good the kluger is on fuel, compared to his gutless slugbox 4 cylinder rav4.

You know all of this was worked out in Forumula 1 in the 1980's

They had all kinds of motors powering cars from NA V12, V8, Turbo V8, Turbo V6, Turbo 4cyl.

In the mid 80's when rules were changed and fuel restircitons were gradually more and more applied and later a boost restrictions were ramped up the ONLY engine configuration that came out ON TOP was the V6!!!!!!!!!!!

Fast forward 30 years to today and you see in Automotive general consumption filed that the V6 platform is the Dominant platform, Nissan R35 GTR anyone??????? No matter what powerplant this was the one engineers "chose" over V10, V8, V12 etc etc etc.............

You will see in 2 years time F1 will fast forward to the future and they will go totally back to a V6 turbo engine and they will make the power they make now BUT use over 20% less fuel than they do today with a NA V8.

V6 architecture is pretty much the ultimate internal combustion engine, plenty and plent examples from motorsport (true motorsports where any engine can compete and the best rise to the top! not the contribed BS that exists today!!!)

    Anyway My rant over.

To clean my car I used the Karcher at work, now way in hell would I clean it with a hose bro :)

  18. Mate I had one of these. Bought it with 30,000km on it and sold it with 160,000+km on it.

The motors are crap! They use ALOT of fuel!!!!!

They have weak valve stem seals (oil consumption after 90,000km) apparently common problem.

If you buy a manual like what I had, they have a shifting problem to do with the dual mass flywheel, basically almost stops you from shifting after you rev the motor hard

Permanent 4WD they flog out the front hubs (I was the first in Aus to get a Marks 4WD part time conversion kit that had a spool center diff and front hubs as per pic).

In short........ very old car, and old tech.......... You are MUCH better off buying a FJ Cruiser.!!!!

I also fitted mine with extractors and exhaust and K&N filter and in 2WD mode it could hardly out accelerate our 100 series TD.

Average consumption was near 15lt per 100km!

Once towing a box trailer full of wood and a passenger, 500km I used an astronomical amount of fuel (driving fast) it was around 21lt per 100km. I sold this car and bought a Kluger!

You can't beat a modern V6 for power and efficiency !!! Its a bit like old Nissan GTR's the RB26 was good in its day, everyone gagged over the R34 Skyline, now its a nothing car compared to the R35 and its V6 twin turbo ......... similar with these cars mate. The old in line 6 is a piece of garbage compared to the V6 of smaller capacity.

  19. Peter the photos are great mate, I always wanted to go fourwheel driving in snow, but never got around to it, I wish I still had my fourwheel drive, I will buy another fourby in the next couple of years, when I can afford somthing better than the kluger, mate if you ever swap fj back to a kluger let me know I would love to have it.

once again thanks for the photos and I enjoy reading all you posts and information.

Forgot to mention, what you may not like is cleaning the mud!!!!! I hate leaving it on my cars so clean it next day to prevent any rust.

There was over 25kg of mud and rocks, pebbles dirt, stuck in the guards and underneath the chassis *unbelievable* so so much work to clean it properly and keep it better looking than when I got it from the Toyota stealership

No worries mate, glad you like them.

I have a habit of changing cars every few years so you never know your luck! I do however sh7t myself with each new one cause you take a risk that you will get a dud, that either does not perform or uses too much fuel or oil (if its a 200 series lol!!!) ............. this one is just excellent, will be very hard to part with it :(
