Should work here if you add Australia Whereis maps! GPS units are a worldwide device....just comes down to what maps you use in the unit.

Also it will probably be in mph as I dont recall a setting to change it to kmh!

why do you want to buy one from the US?isn't there Aus. ones here?

the reason is because they are alot cheaper for example$500 u.s compared to $2000 au for a factory gps with bluetooth

if they have maps for australia, yes they will work. but being bought from the US i highly doubt it.

if i bought the gps system from the u.s would it work if i used the australian whereis disc in it ? thats the question.

Yes it will work as the only difference between the GPS units would be the speed (mph or kmh), as stated above, and distance readout settings in the firmware. You could get compatible maps from anywhere in the world and put them in the unit and it will work.

The GPS is just a radio receiver that uses lats and longs to determine where you are on the loaded maps....any map! Its a "generic" GPS receiver so the one variable is the maps which is what all GPS's run off.

For example I purchased a Garmin 196 Aircraft GPS directly from the US and just downloaded the latest info for Australia....works fine!

The only reason that the most GPS units in cars dont have world maps is the size of the database for all the roads would be so large that the unit would be so slow at finding address points etc. Just remember the maps are database driven so the bigger the database the slower the operation.

All vehicle GPS models are basically the same in every country the only difference is the maps.

In fact I think the distance and speed can be changed between metric and imperial in the back end that I have seen.....I will get back to you on that one for sure though.

Just checked and there is is no way of changing the speed or distance to/from imperial/metric unless you have some kind of interface to the GPS with Toyota/Denso software running to change parameters.

When you go into the basic back end to check firmware revisions etc it comes up with country (AU in this case) as well as other info which is mainly just status info and some setups for bluetooth. Also give GPS speed so you can compare to speedo dial.

To truely check if GPS would work in another country, you would have to download US wheris (as example) and put disc in AU GPS and see if it works ok regarding operation etc. Obviously you would be off the US map but putting in locations and scrolling thru map may work!?

I have hunted everywhere on the net to get deeper into the GPS firmware without much luck. There are some US sites (mentioned in this forum) that provide changes but you have to know exactly what Denso unit you have or risk it turning into a brick.

So in conclusion I am 99% sure the GPS will work in Australia but it would use imperial and not metric read outs for speed and distance.
