P51 Porsche ZF series gearbox using Brake band syncros Toyota 1973-1978.

Ratios:

W50/51 P51 (ex my japanese owners handbook 1976 and confirmed by Rivers in 2005).

3.287 3.525 First gear so the GT is slower in first.

2.043 2.054 Second gear maybe one tooth different.

1.394 1.396 Third gear really splitting hairs now.

1.000 1.000 Fourth.

0.858 0.853 Fifth gear. Flat out in NT the car would do exactly 200 kph at 6000 rpm.

I found a fair P51 box which has allowed me to remove the old gearbox fitted by AMI to the GT in 1979

only to discover that they had replaced it with a P51 bless their hearts.

Here is a pictoral event and repair time line.

Q? is it a W50 or P51? We are about to find out. You can not tell from the outside, not a hope.

??? The big BOLT is the give away on the Countershaft, the W50 is not held on by a big bolt.

Bellhousing will fit 18R and 20R (US SR5 Corona)

TOP ROW Main Front: Main centre (identical) rear of housing.

BOTTOM. Countershaft front, centre (OPEN) and rear of main case.

Bearings are available in Australia for about $200

Gasket kit $110.

Total rebuild cost about $350.00

Not bad considring the age.

QED.
