I would recommend a C's short shifter.. It's not cheap, about $300, but it is short. Only downside is that it is a hassle to fit.

The other suggestion I have is the TRD quickshift, that is as easy as it gets when it comes to replacement - drop in, drop out.

Let me know if you are interested in either of the products, I can supply either of them.

TWM make a shifter for the 5th gen but not the 6th gen.

And the 6th gen shifter fits in a 5th, a lot of ppl use the 6th gen shifter in a 5th gen as a shortshifter...

so go figure :P

I'm not a celica fanatic..so i dont know what generations you are speaking of, but according to the TWM website, they make right hand drive short shifters to suite right upto 2004 models...

and if the 6th gen fits the 5th gen, then the 5th gen should fit the 6th gen, then the 5th gen TWM should fit the 6th gen yes?

Lots of TWM shifters are interchangable with cars they havnt tested them on... all of us Mazda guys are constantly helping laser owners out with shifters....because the car is identical... and then shifters that are spose to only suite 2003 model 323s actually fit right the way back to stinky old early 90s 323s...

go check out the stuff and see if theres something there that'll fit...

Basically, the 6th gen fits in the 5th gen... however the 6th gen stock shifter is shorter than the 5th gen shifter and there is no point getting a shortened 5th gen shifter if it's going to be the stock height! I know some 6th gen Celica owners who have bought the TWM shifter and found that it is not much difference from stock.

In addition - their shifters are straight, which throws out the throw (pardon the pun) :P

yeh they alter the geometry to reduce the throw.... The TWM wasnt the shortest option *by a long shot* for the 323... sawing off the standard shifter or buying the kartboy product would have been heaps shorter...but the throw reduction on the TWM is nothing short of spectacular (something like 55% for my particular car i think).

all to do with geometry...trade off is leverage... mines much harder to shift now because i've got reduced leverage from the shorter shifter and more reduced leverage from the change in shifter geometry. A weighted shift knob would solve much of this though, and get back some much needed leverage..

Guess it depends on what you are going short for - shorter look, or shorter feel...

edit: you could always email and see if they'll make up a part for the 6th gen - i know the celica was pretty popular in the states...and if theres a market for them (like if you can provide them with a decent sized group buy), they may take the plunge and develop one.....worth asking the question, my dealings with them have only been good...great bunch of people who are always happy to help wherever its feasable for them to do so.

edit again: since the original question was a shifter for the 98 celica, it would seem they already have something to suite...

I have tried the TWM, TRD and C's shifter for the Celica, by far the C's one is the best feel. TRD and C's are not the cheapest, however I have no troubles paying for quality, especially for a TRD product - fitment is always guaranteed to be spot-on perfect. It's the way Toyota was meant to be ;) lol

Fair enough... I'm not one for buying factory owned tune up bits though (not a mazdaspeed part in sight on my car!) simply because of the cost attached to them for being what they are..(or named what they are)...

anyway, some options there if someone wants to look at it :)

* Their products are a guaranteed fit, with as little frustration as possible (usually!)

* Their products have gone through much R&D, and have been rigorously tested (let's hope)

* Their products will not void new car warranty (I've asked and tested this)

* There was another point but I forgot it (oops)

At the end of the day, I don't just go for brand name items (although I admit, I am a bit of a bling / brand slut when it comes to car parts :D), I generally go for what is the best value for money vs the best performance. I mean, some factory tune parts are worth buying, some are just ridiculously expensive, some are not as good as other aftermarket products for the same price bracket. B)

TRD wont void warrenty? jeeze if only i was so lucky. Mazdaspeed blue will void warrenty unless installed by a mazdaspeed specialist (good luck finding one in australia), then i think there is yellow and red which are both instant death to warrenty...obviously the really neat parts are in the later 2 categories ;)

As for fitment....yeh....sometimes aftermarket is alot of stuffing around, but i've found TWM to be especially good at "fit first time everytime" and providing great instructions and any special tools needed to get the job done (ring spring pliers...but meh)... at least on mazda stuff...

One of the reasons I like their product and recommend it at any chance I can get =) Not often you find an aftermarket company who puts so much attention to detail.

anyway..i'll stop posting before this becomes a big off topic thingy :)

It comes down to which dealer you go to. You will find that some dealers actually like selling TRD parts, and those ones will give you full warranty on them (Castle Hill Toyota, NSW, for example; STi Docklands, Melbourne, as another) I'm fairly certain that there will be at least one Mazda dealer who specialises in MazdaSpeed stuff.

Also, different dealerships will give you different responses regarding warranty - some of them see it as a factory part (which in essence it is).

In general, I have found most dealerships to honour your warranty unless your modifcation caused a failure, in which case the failed item will not be covered.

For example, if you are having warranty issues with your suspension, however you have done engine modifications, then it will not affect your suspension.

Digging up an old thread, but...xD

Has anyone bought a short throw shifter off ebay? If so, how was it? Did it reduce the throw much? Reason i ask is because i don't think i could justify spending $150+ for a TWM or other names. Is there anything wrong with buying an ebay one aside from not knowing how much throw and/or is reduced? Can it snap or something? :S
