  1. Gday First have a look at the teeth on your ignition key they maybe a bit thin, if so try anoher key. If you turn the key and you can hear a clicking sound from your starter motor, its not the key it is the starter motor and solinoid. Water crossings should not mess with your starter motor, but mud or dust may get into your starter solinoid. So pull it off and see what state the teeth are in if they are shiny and smoothed over, replace the whole unit. As far as the brake light coming on, if there is no difference in pedal pressure it probly is a loose wire on your mastercylinder or the globe maybe loose, where it goes into the dash.
  2. The other thing to remember is that mid way through 89 Toyota change model designations and spec's. Prior Aug 89, YN 63 4Runner sr5 moved over to Surfs hence when ordering parts you have to give your vin number. Also if you speak with the Toyota boys and get a look at their computors you will find that parts for many Hilux's are also the same for the 4Runners. The SR5 represents "Sports Rally Pack & a 5 speed this only is for pre mid 89s and not the Surf's.
  3. Gday cookie More information is need to help you out, have a look on the compliance plate under the bonnet and get some exact details and the post them. 18r and 3 and 4y motors came out with #3 types of dizzies (all hilux/ 4runner motors) 1) points set ignition, they will through out if you look at them long enough. 2) electronic ignition, on a carby motor, 3yc and 4yc these dizzies had 1 or 2 vacume ports on them 3) electronic ignition on an efi 3yec or 4yec they had no vaume ports (not relevent to your situation) have a look at this post ................. http://au.toyotaownersclub.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=32099 The only thing that effects the cost effectiveness of a 4y is the basic principles of engineering and mechanics (and over vacumed). If you get any motor to breath properly (suck it in and push it out) you will increase performance and economy, it takes time, money, lots of research and smarts. My 4y now makes 130hp and fuel is 8.3lts / 100ks and i am not finished yet. I have just finished doing a webber transplant on a 300k 87 4yc and she is a tired motor and the transplant revived my friends faith in his runner. The crankshaft pully only has a 18mm bolt holding it on to the crankshaft and #4 , 10mm bolts holding the p/s pully and a/c pully onto the crankshaft pully. There is a key /key way to locate the crankshaft pully onto the crankshaft. If it was loose so would all the other pullies attached, besides it would only effect the timing mark on the pully in relation to the timing mark on the housing. Point 2 is that if this is the case it would only be apparent when you put a timing light on the engine and it won't throw the timng out. This is because the dizzy shafy gear when inserted into the block is located on a seperate idler shaft. and this shaft is attached to the timing sprockets and the cam and not the crank.
  4. Gday I have an 89 runner and after exhaustive research i rebuilt my standard motor. It got a new webber carby but it only lasted 2hrs bench time, as i then decided to go efi. I did a carby job on my mates 87runner (my webber change over) and he is impressed with the fuel economy and the extra grunt at the rear wheels. The engine overhaul depends on mainly funds, and as it is primarily a farm vehical you do not need all the extra goodies. Keep away from v6 conversions as you will need to replace the gear box, your G52 box doesn't have the guts for a holden v6 which a lot of people tend to do. I have been building mine for 3yrs and it has "ALL" the best goodies money can buy, but it is still one very hot 4y which produces in excess of 130bhp. If yours has low compression in number 2cylinder you have a very tired motor A) you will need to rebore and go oversize, B) rebuild your bottem end. C) rebuild your head being as you can't do one without doing the other, as some thing will BREAK rule number #1 (if you do the top you do the bottom, if you do the bottom you do the top) A rebuilt 4y will set you back about $1500 out of the create, mine was a lot more because it is a custom build. A "NEW" webber is about $500, this is just off memory. There are short cuts you can take that are a lot cheaper but they are dependant on vehical use, ie "just farm work", "into the local town", if you do highway driving and hard 4x4 work don't do any short cuts, it will cost you in reliability and funds big time. I can post some pic's and more detail if you are interested, or just pm me.
