  1. how about running a 1UZ-FE or a Commo supercharged 6? Little do I know though

1U-FZE has been done, quite successfully from what I've heard. Both the engines you're talking about are quite heavy, so will upset the balance of the car a bit.

1UZ is lighter than you think....all-alloy does have it's advantages

  2. Hahaha, we get the real deal :P :P :P ...

From memory that starts a chain reaction which gets you the girls as well, har har har.

The 2000 models have the facelift fronts yes?

Yeah mate, facelift came on the 2000 models... My car is now a facelift as I hated the bug eyes... lol...

Sedans never came with the bug-eyes though, fortunately (they do suit the Seca sometimes though, depends on the car)

  3. If you don't want to fork out for a DSLR (and have to carry lenses around as well as the camera itself), but want the picture size, zoom levels and manual adjustability, it's hard to go past a bridge super-zoom camera.

And once you start looking at bridge cameras, it's VERY hard to go past a Lumix FZ28. Just bought one myself, 10MP + 18x optical zoom + RAW capability, image stabilisation, manual focus and full PSAM settings, Li-ion battery, SD/SDHC cards (best for cost and availability, plus fairly universal outside of Sony), can take 720p HD video, output 1080 to a TV via component cables.

RRP is around $650 (only just on the market), I got mine off eBay for $550 including case, 4gig SDHC card, spare battery, screen protector and a 1m tripod.

Excellent value, and very good reviews.

  4. Heh, I can barely remember my HSC.....I still laugh every year when suddenly all the news stories come on about students cram studying and going to all sorts of measures to get good marks, basically the whole period is just one big sleep deprivation experiment.

Just to make it more stressful for all those little year 12ers out there: If you think the HSC is hard, once you get to uni you essentially have one every 6 months....for 4 years.

  5. If an unstoppable force collides with an unmovable object, who wins?

Neither. The unstoppable force will enter the orbit of the immovable object, forever caught in a logical loop.

Just like strapping a slice of buttered toast to the back of a cat and dropping it from a height. Since cats always land on their feet, and toast always lands butterside down, the two will drop until about 10cm off the ground, at which point the cat will hover in mid-air and rotate slowly like a spit-roast.

  6. I want to raplce my factory annoyingly quiet airbox with a nice grunty filter ;) lol

Problem is.. i have sensor in the side of my airbox, my old man (who has worked in toyota parts for about 20 years) tells me that it is the airflow sensor... If i was to install a pod filter and piping and move the air flow sensor into the piping rather than the side of the airbox would this cause problems...

I imagine the air flow dynamics in the air box are different to those in the pipe... will my ecu get false readings?

Figured you were the guys to ask... thanks :(

It's not an airflow sensor, but an intake air temperature sensor. AE112s are MAP, not AFM.

And just get a hole cut into the new piping and stick the sensor + bung into that, it's what I did.

    P1060137.jpg

You can just see the sensor on the alloy intake piping about 20cm from the flex-pipe connected to the throttle body (pod filter is in the cavity left by the resonator, behind the front bumper and under the guard)

  7. how did you find mesh'ing the front bar? was it a difficult task? it looks effective.

pity you didnt start with a manual transmisison. is it 4 or 6 cyl? how does it go now with the mods you have done? is it quick?

Engine-bay shots show the 5SFE, which is 4-cyl. Would hate to drive one of those with auto (manual was bad enough)

  8. merSEEDies... merSEEDies?!!?!! say it right damnit its merSAYdies.

did anyone see at the end where the guy said he did a quarter mile in 13sec in the camry wagon... uh-huh..........

You say tomayto, I say tomarto. Both are perfectly appropriate and acceptable pronunciations.

And I think the "1/4 mile" was figurative, not literal. Would have been the "400m-or-so-of-tarmac-next-to-the-junkyard-but-we-could-only-use-300m-because-we-had-to-leave-room-for-braking"

  9. does it damage the auto transmission if you change the gear manually eg from L>2>3>D on the 07/08 corollas gated shift?

If it did, do you think they'd still put it in the car? Or not put a warning about it in the manual?

When you use the L>2 etc shift points you aren't actually changing gears, just limiting which gears the gearbox can select. L means the box stays in first, 2 allows first and second gear etc etc. It's the same as overdrive, which just locks out/allows top gear to be selected.

  10. Anyone else has this feeling???....you love your car so much that when you see the speedo eating the kms....it hurts? LOL :-'(

Mine's going to hurt the instant that magic 3 rolls over...definitely going to be photo time, no matter where I am. The hurt will come from the fact that the only cars I've seen with more than 300k on the clock have either been taxis, Telstra Hiaces, Volvos or had numerous engine conversions - mine is none of those. Proud, but still cringe-worthy

  11. The reason why i put on 20,000kms in about 7 months is because i use my car for work and drive alot!

For a while mine was doing 50,000km a year when my dad drove it to work up in Mudgee - 300km on a Monday + Friday, 50km to and from the mine each day. Plus it has seen numerous trips to Sydney, a couple to Bathurst, one up the coast to Lismore, and lots of running around in between.......oh, and nothing has broken on it (bar normal wear and tear). Got to love Toyota reliability.

  12. sorry for snapping, ive been having a very stressfull month.... look i know how to drive a manual, im just not confident in one so....

Only way to get more confident is to drive it....I managed to teach my g/f how to drive manual (at a bearable level) in only a couple of weeks. After that, it comes down more to the individual car than the driver, some people who only drive one manual car their entire life can hope into another one and be completely hopeless, nothing beats practice and varied experience. The clutch + gearbox feel in my 102 is completely different to my AE82 (even though it's the same gearbox), and both are again completely different to my parent's SXV20 Camry and Mazda2.

  13. Well, as far as i know i think mine is sitting on about 220,000kms... Abit high for a 91 rolla but she still runs, and goes hard.

220k isn't high for a '91 model car, especially in Australia (big distances between major centres mean kilometres get racked up very easily).

My Dec '97 AE102 is on about 294,000km at the moment, getting ready to take it off the road for a few days to do timing belt, water pump etc before I go on a cruise at the end of the year. Problem is finding the time, and alternate transport to work in case it takes longer than a weekend.

  14. Don't bother Hiro, some people are happy to walk into a McDonalds with $5 and expect a well cooked Beef Wellington. If they can't be happy with something their own country has made then that's their loss.

Sounds like my g/f's brother's g/f, she is _so_ pedantic about her takeway. If she goes to Red Rooster and asks for a drumstick, then waits till they got home only to find out she got a wing, she will RING UP Red Rooster and get them to make a whole new meal for her, which she then goes down and picks up. FFS, it's just a piece of chicken. She's done the same with Dominos too, got a pepperoni pizza with BBQ sauce instead of tomato, she got them to make a whole new pizza. She didn't return the other one, just left it in the fridge (so I had it for lunch the next day).

  15. they copied pretty much everything!!! l

FFS why are people still complaining about this? It's been gone over time and time again that the Australian version HAS to use the same set, intro, show style etc because it's part of the contract. The Top Gear name and rights have been sold to SBS for them to produce a local version, but it must adhere to whatever rules the BBC put down. It's a freaking franchise for crying out loud. So can we stop this now?

  16. The second episode was a lot better. However the only work they can change is what is filmed in the studio as everything else has been shot already. Season 2 will allow for changes to correct the shocking camera angles used on the test track.

Not sure if it was just my eyes playing tricks, but the camera angles did seem better this time for both the Power Lap and the SIABSC. I remember TGUK's photography was awful for the first season too, but that's what a budget and limited experience will tend to throw up.

  17. I've read these threads on a few forums and there seems to be a real bandwagon of "oMg i'M nEvEr WaTcHiNg ThIs AgAiN iT's So ***** lolololol"

Guess what..... it's not the same as Top Gear UK. Shock horror. The presenters aren't as experienced and the track is different. And, if you compared budgets the same way you compared penises, SBS is hung like an acorn where as the BBC is packing a Collins Class Submarine down the front of it's dacks. It's not just feasible to compare every facet of the infant Aussie version to the UK/worldwide steamroller. I'm as big a fan as they come of the UK version too but I'll happily watch the boys broadcasting from Bankstown Airport in the knowledge that it's the best thing we've ever had locally.

My only concern is that they'll hold back on the criticism of the cars in order to keep the manufacturers pleased. In my opinion this is what has plagued the Aussie motoring shows of the past.

That maybe so, but SBS surely must have known that there was no way Top Gear Australia could compete with Top Gear UK. Top Gear UK is in another league (or planet for that matter!) and inarguably one of the best TV series to hit the TV. So DON'T go chasing and paying for the rights to affiliate it with TOP GEAR UK!!!! Give THE SERIES ANOTHER NAME for crying out loud!! But it's too late now. Personally, I think its aweful, its embarrassing and it's an injustice for the program to share the same name. I hope it doesn't reach the shores of other countries or star on Top Gear Uk. PUT >LATEST< TOP GEAR UK ON.

If you don't associate it with Top Gear UK, chances are people wouldn't watch it in the first place. You have to agree that no matter how good or bad it was, most people who watched the first episode were watching it because of the Top Gear name.

The car industry is a great example of creating absolute failures out of decent cars just because they changed to an unfamiliar name. Take the Tiida for instance. It's not THAT bad, but because it doesn't have the Pulsar name (the car it replaced) no-one bought the bloody thing. Ford almost had the same problem when they replaced the Laser with the Focus. Mitsubishi replaced the Magna with the 380, and it flopped hugely. Toyota Australia did the smart thing and retained the Corolla name whilst the rest of the world went Auris - if they'd changed too, I doubt sales would have been as good.

  18. It's second hand. You pretty much get what your given I think.

Exactly. The manual will state what comes from the factory. The ad will tell you what comes with the actual sale. Who knows what happened with the other key/remote, the first owner probably just lost them. It's like selling a second-hand computer game without the instruction-manual or original box. The game is still the same, but a little worn, and some things are missing. Just because the original came with manual + box and shrink-wrapping, no reason for a used example to include the same unless advertised so.

  19. Apparently they make the extractors for the car model before and after my model. He then investigated to get one for me to get custom made. but the bloke wanted $700 for the extractor to be made. so my mechanic got the manifold for me brand spankin new from toyota.

THE CAR I GOT IS A 1996 AE102X COROLLA SECA CSX HATCH. The engine is a 7AFE 1.8L automatic

If it's the engine pipe that doesn't line up, all you do is spend $50 and get a new pipe to the cat made up. Easy-as for any exhaust shop to do, makes me think the mechanic was taking you for a bit of a ride. If one guy quoted you $700, thats a rip off if ever I've seen one, and you should have shopped around.

Extractors for the AE112 (the model after yours) should be exactly the same as the AE102, they share almost identical front ends/engine bays. And I've got extractors on my 1997 7AFE (it's manual though), same series as you (but sedan) and there was no issue with things lining up.

    Something's not right here.

  20. BAD NEWS EVERYONE

im apparently cant get extractors for my car. Apparently for my model they made about 6 types of engines. my mechanic got all the extractors that were surpose to fit the car. All of which couldn't be solded onto the engine....later to find out that there isnt one available for my car.

The mechanic however had a contacts with Toyota and managed to find me a brand spankin new manifold instead which was their last one. (very rare)

The option he gave me was spend $700 to get someone make me an extractor for my car (with installation)

    OR

get the brand new manifold for $500. (with installation)

Well, someone's been feeding you a load of crap. 6 different engines? The AE10x series in Australia came out with TWO, count them, TWO engines. 4AFE, and 7AFE. Even if you take into account auto and manual versions, thats only 4 (and there's no difference in most of the engine with the transmission option). But essentially, there are just two, and they're very similar.

Being a CSX, you should have the 7AFE 1.8L. Extractors ARE out there, probably around the $300 mark for a decent-ish set.

And solded to the engine? WTF? Exhaust manifolds BOLT to the engine, and both the 4AFE and 7AFE share the same bolt pattern on the head - the only real difference is that the 7A manifold is slightly taller to take into account the taller deck height. Actually go to the place and get the mechanic to SHOW you how they don't fit. And take photos to show us, we should be able to tell fairly quickly exactly what engine you have etc etc

And $500 for a standard manifold is an absolute rip, they are worthless pieces of ****.

  21. Hmm....

    condensation in the pipes...

maybe there is some water vapour in the engine? (i know thats possible...)

A lot of the exhaust gas is actually water........

hydrocarbon (ie petrol) + oxygen (intake air) + nitrogen (intake air) = H2O (water vapour) + C02 (carbon dioxide) + N0x (nitrous oxides)

If the mixture isn't quite right, you do get carbon monoxide too, or if really rich then just carbon (soot). But water vapour is a standard part of exhaust gases. When the surrounding air is cool (ie early mornings, winter etc), the air cools the exhaust sufficiently to make this vapour condense into water droplets, which you see as either a light steam/mist from the exhaust, or even water dripping from the tail-pipe.

  22. install the new spark plugs and tighten to the correct torque setting (you can get a cheap torque wrench for about $30 that will do it fine). reinstall the ignition coils with the igniter, reconnent the electrical connectors for the coils, then reconnect the battery.

Torque wrench isn't usually needed, general rule of thumb is finger-tight and then an extra quarter turn, no more. The last thing you want is to strip the spark plug thread, or break off a plug.
