I guess in regards to Toyota's Synergy drive system, a few things need to be understood about efficiency.
Toyota have The ONLY Hybrid vehicle which successfuly uses a combination of both the Petrol and the electric engine.
either the Prius or the Hybrid Camry are the ONLY real current solutions to reducing green house emissions while motoring. The electric engine is used where the petrol engine is most innefficient, at take off. and the petrol engine is used when all is needed is for the rev's to tick over, and keep the car moving.
Hybrid technology, removes all the thirsty ancillories from the engine. The AC, and the PS are powered from the Hybrid Electric Battery. The petrol engine can then run at its most efficient when being used for either driving the car forward, or charging the battery when not under load.
Because of the vast distances which we have here in Autralia, Charging stations will take a long time to start to appear. But because the Hybrid Synergy Drive system we have is a combination of the two, by using small amounts of Petrol, we can cover vast distances. (Prius 3.9l/100km and Hybrid Camry 6.0l/100km - these are combined figures)
While i can appreciate the argument, saying, "i make most of my trip in urban areas, most in stop start traffic, so an EV car would be best" Of course it would be!!!! The Toyota HSD would run, on just the electric motors if need be. Only tipping in a little bit of fuel everynow and then to suppliment the battery power.
and without trying to sound like a Toyota Salesman, i would own a Hybrid camry any day. they are probably the best car package on the road when you consider all the categories. Safety, Power, Comfort, Technology, Fuel Efficiency. If you havent driven the Hybrid Camry, i suggest you give one a go.

Hey Hey,
Just want to introduce you all to Tony, the MX62 Cressida.... why the name Tony i hear you ask? well my GF's house mate called out... "now thats one funky old Cressida" and i broke out into song, with the much loved Tone Loc Classic 80's hit... Funky Cold Medina.
anyways....
here are the Specs... He's a ONE owner, MX62 Cressida Wagon DX model with 208XXX kms...
2.8l 5ME Straight 6cyl with a 4 Speed Auto Trans.
Aircon, Power Steer, Power windows, cassette deck and the cleanest interior you will see on a 29y/o car.
I bolted the BBS Wheels on her to drive her home, (Dunlop LM702 tread)
its the most cruisy car i have ever owned! and in perfect running order!
here is the only pic i have of Tony, taken as soon as i bolted the wheels on, before he was washed, and polished.

Guys, Gals, Enthusiasts
Currently i am living in a place with no shed or parking.... and i really REALLY want to find ahouse mate whos looking to move out, who values highly the use of an under cover parking area and a work shop for doing bits and peices on their cars.
I would ideally like anyone in Melbourne who is a little bit interested in finding a place in the eastern suburbs, who wants a house in a quiet area, with at least(!!!) a double lock up Garage.
if your keen, leet me know, and we can talk about timing money and priorities.
Peace.

I'm pleased to report that I picked up my new KX-S from Lane Toyota (Melbourne) today with a FULL TANK of fuel despite a momentary 'identity crisis' for the car ;). Good to see that the city dealers also do the right thing.
Full credit to "BlindKidSeeks",
Cheers
Roger.

NOV!!!!! man thats ages away....
GOR is a VERY long way... i'd be happy to help out with the scouting run... last time i think we clocked up around 700+ kms.
i think your start time is the first thing you need to fix...
GOR is notorious for 3 things:
1. Awesome Roads
2. Awesome Sights
3. F###ing Traffic
Now you can have numbres 1 & 2, without 3.... but you need to be in Apollo Bay for Breakfast.... not lunch.
i suggest a 7:00 am depart.
