Starting problems 2003 Prado manual petrol

Having intermittent starting problem . Engine turns over but won't fire. Eventually got going only to firmly close the bonnet causing it to cut out again! Restarted straight after ok. Electrical smell around battery / relay area but only after turning and turning the engine for a long time . Also noticed that the petrol gauge was at half full when turning the engine over but when fired up it flicked to full ( swapping to 2nd tank I assume) - just coincidence or relevant I wonder ?

Have been through some deep water few weeks back and might be relevant seeing postings re starter motor , however I assume engine wouldn't turn over at all if it was a starter motor issue ?

Mechanic hasn't been able to sort out yet . Tried swapping relay but made no difference ( however fault is intermittent) and they have checked the fuel pressure. Battery is new and spark plugs been changed.

Any ideas please ???
