97 conquest gearbox oil suggestions

Hi Everyone,

I don't have the original logbooks or owners manual for my car. What gearbox oil does toyota suggest for the 5 speed 97 'rolla? Has anyone had experiences with different oils? and possibly have some suggestions what members are using on the forums.

I've noticed caltex seems to be plentiful in autobarn and supercheap. Is this a good oil?

75W/90 Grade Oil will be sufficient or 80W/90 Grade Oil if your gearbox is a little on the worn side...

I'm using Castrol 80W/90 in mine at the moment and will be replacing it soon with Genuine Toyota (Caltex Made) 75W/90 cause thats what we now have at work haha...

Also, if your gearbox is notchy or noisy, get a tube of Nulon Diff and Gear Treatment... Works a treat :) :) :) ...

Also depends on how much u wanna spend<you can go top shelf & purchase two litres Redline lightweight shockproof oil (colour blue) Toyota recommends 80w/90, the shockproof is rated 80w/140 meaning the load rating is higher eg for heavy shifts for racing,Pulling a trailer,Hill climbing etc,Last time i checked the shockproof was selling for the likes of $27.00 dollars a quart (just under a litre)Its expensive but in my experience Jap cars have a characteristic 'Throwback' in shifts,This oil (in my opinion)can eliminate or 'shorten' throwback, which u can feel the difference by less notchy non loaded shifts and easier shifts under load..

If your syncro's aren't worn then I'd use Castrol VMX80.

Use the shockproof oil if the syncho's are on their way out. You might have to use a friction modifier to get the synchro's working properly with shockproof oil, as stated on the redline website.

Thanks for the suggestions.

It does feel notchy; when you shift gears sometimes it pops out of gear just as you move the lever slightly. It might be a bit worn. I just use the car to drive 50% highway 50% city driving, nothing to harsh.

Popping out of gears isn't the syncho's, it's worn shift detents... Oil wont fix that.
