Renewed mine just recently and had variations from $700 to $1200 depending on insurer. Found RACQ and AAMI were closest on price at the bottom end.

The more expensive insurances did cover a little more, such as all glass with the windscreen option and riot damage.

$870 on a 2006 Kluger Grande (Gen 1) with AAMI

Holy Crap Batman. I dont know how they calculate it but I guess it all depends on the area you live in, living out in the nice quiet bush were nothing ever gets stolen Im paying $620pa for a 2005 CV Sport with 49,000km and both drivers my wife and I are both only 25. Thats With RACQ.

I'd love to know how they calculate estimates on car insurance.

Our brand new Kluger is about 20% cheaper to insure than our 2003 Mazda 323 SP20 (which has a market value less than 50% of the Kluger)....

Go figure....

Maybe for whatever reasons older cars have a higher risk of being involved in an accident?

Maybe for whatever reasons older cars have a higher risk of being involved in an accident?

Perhaps cars pre-1990's but the only extra safety feature the Kluger has over my Mazda is VSC and maybe a couple of airbags.

The Kluger will take further to pull-up during breaking, is less direct in it's steering response and is more likely to be taken "off-road"....all of which I would have thought may contribute to making the Kluger a more expensive car to insure.

Anyway, sorry to go OT !

Have a read of http://www.caradvice.com.au/19181/not-wort...ng-think-again/:

"Cars insured for less than $6000 are the most commonly stolen and the insurance data also reveals the number of thefts increases with vehicle age." and "cars above $26,000 were more likely to have items stolen from them."

Maybe the Mazda 3 is more likely to be stolen than the Kluger?

The Kluger rates pretty poorly on the NRMA car theft ratings though (http://www.nrma.com.au/keeping-safe-secure...gs/tables.shtml).

My partners new 2009 Mazda3 was insured for $200 less than my Kluger, but around the same rate as for her 1997 Camry.

Who knows how insurers work

I'm paying ~$1000 for a 2010 Altitude AWD through Allianz.

Rating 1, named drivers both over 30, ~15years driving experience, no claims in previous 3 years, Garaged.

Removed windscreen and rental car option to lower the premium a bit, excess of $550.

I think its the suburb it is garaged in, Inner West Sydney. Its not good for car theft.

NRMA was around $200 more expensive, AAMI was about the same. But I chose Allianz due to choice of repairer in the event of an accident.

For my KX-S AWD 2010, I am paying $1,115 through NRMA.

Both drivers over 30, 5+ experience, no accident history

Inner west, Sydney.

that's interesting.. NRMA quoted me much more than you and your KXS is a more expensive vehicle.

Just checked my policy. There is one item called as years of insurance discount ($300).

I think its just the Suburb that is making the most difference.

I've been recently shopping for insurance for my other car; I know of someone who is two suburbs away also in the inner west, but is paying $700 less than I am.

That is going through the same insurance company, same car, same year model, similar age and driving history (both excellent driving record).

Its amazing how much difference a suburb can make to your premium.. you'd almost think car theives aren't mobile and can't get around to neighbouring suburbs or something!!

I think so. I did research in the past for same model (a medium-size car) by changing suburb only.

Interestingly to see one suburb getting $100 less than surrounding suburb.

But the premium is also depends on car model and age. The quote for my old car (market value < $10k) is much higher than my Kluger.
