Intermittent whistling noise when braking

Hi,

I got a 2003 Camry and every morning it creates like a whistle noise when I step on brake. However it goes off for couple minutes. it also occurs when I get the car form parking after my work in the afternoon. I'm not sure if it's the brake pads or the transmission. I already asked a brake specialist shop when I had my car seviced and they said pads are still ok and they didn't hear the noise on the day they serviced my car. I'm assuming it happens after having my car on IDLE for several hours (not sure if it's something related). Can somebody help and let me know possible problem? Thanks.

When the car has been standing for some time eg overnight you get a slight rusting of the disc surface and this is your most likely cause. The first application of the brakes generally wipes it off. Nothing to worry about..

Thats what I was going to say... either that or you have some kind of super expensive ceramic pads that squeal when they are cold..

Only thing I have to add to that is how dirty are the pads/calipers?? Cos a general build up of dust/dirt/crud can also cause the whistling/squealing effect, although that's more prolonged so if its going away its probably as the others suggest. Still, a good clean under there probably wouldn't hurt either!

What ever you dont use WD40 like this retard guy I know. Fortunatley he realised after he had just done the rears what a massive mistake he had made. Endes up having to replace the rear pads as they didnt grip the calliper at all.

It's my first car and just got it from a car yard. that's why I joined the Toyota Owners Club to get familiarize with toyota camry. :) Any help/advice for my car is BIG help. Thanks in advance.

There is plenty of advice around and quite a few other Gen 5 owners (as well as Camry owners in general); the search function is incredibly helpful as is a general trawl through the Camry board. All the best for you and your Camry! :D

Ceramic pads are the ones they use in motor sports. They can withstand very high temperatures but dont work that well when they are cold. So i was kinda joking haha. If you had the money to fork out - and the need - i would suggest K-sport big brake upgrade with ceramic pads. But this is a useless swap as you will never need that much stopping power.

I havent had that issue on my Camry as yet, but i have heard that noise on other cars.

I always assummed this was caused due to the discs being rusty.

When you take the car for a service in a few month time, might be a good idea to bring this up :)
