Exhaust gas smell in cabin under hard accelleration

I have had a problem under hard accelleration of the smell of exhaust gas in the cabinfor 18 months. A/C is set to recirculate, I had the dealer look, and he could not find a leak. He said it was possibly the gas comming in through the recirculating vents behind the rear bumper when accellerating creates a vacuum behid the car. I am about to try placing a temporary extension to the tail pipe and testing that theory after taking the car to exhaust shop and not finding a leak. Has anybody else had this problem?
