front drive shaft broken

Recommended Posts

Gday, my daughter has a 1993 Rav 4, it developed a noise in the front so it was taken to a mechanic and they told her the CV joint has broken and it needs a new one and a disc rotor and a hub .

i rang them and they sent me a film and a photo of what is wrong .

now as i had worked on Toyota's for many years when i was younger, i have never seen a drive shaft snap where this one has or is this a common problem with these models.

i live in Adelaide and my daughter is in Sydney i feel every problem she has with this car is priced way to high

It is not a common problem to my knowledge. Is it the 2wd or 4wd version? If 4wd, ensure that she is not driving with 4wd engaged.

I thought all Australian XA10 Ravs were constant 4x4...

FYI unless you're going by actual manufacture date it can't be a '93, they didn't go on sale in Aus until mid '94 (and '95 if it's a 5-door)

  • 2 weeks later...

That can happen when the wheel bearing wears slightly and the cv retaining nut loses its tension. The hub starts working loose. Then the end can break off like that. They are something that I like to check every 20K. My Rav4 had the nut so loose that it was finger tight. The flange and wheel bearing was shot.

To be honest, I am not sure.
