Hi everyone,

I have recently purchased a LC300 ZX and not convinced by the stock tyres (Bridgestone Dueler 265/55 R20) as they look too soft for a even gravel road. I understand this is a road based model, but have plans to venture off the tarmac and go on gravel roads. Not intending any serious off-road adventures though.

Has anyone changed their stock tyres? If so what are the tyres used? how is the quality of the tyres and ride, handling, performance change?

Interesting timing for your post because I had recently viewed this YouTube video. I then did some follow up on other car forums. One post suggested pre-selling the tyres then replace with the preferred tyres suitable for his driving requirements. Perhaps in the meantime, discuss your requirements with local tyre shops and get a few recommendations for use on dirt roads etc.

Put the wheels and tyres in the shed and buying 18" wheels and higher profile tyres. Swap when in town. Pay for the tyre place to swap the wheels and tyres around after your trips.

That was my plan with another vehicle, but I got lazy and left the smaller combo on and hence wore out the 60/40 - road/off road - tyres. You're ride will be even better with the higher profile tyres. If that is possible because the SahZX's ride is extraordinary IMO. The brand is another issue - but IMO get Light Truck tyres as they have stronger side walls, and also, find a quiet riding tyre. The quiet bit is important IMO and it will take lots of research to find the right ones that give you both.

Incidentally most off road advise says lower the tyre pressure. To do so you need to have a good pump and know how to let the tyres pressures down quickly. The tyres then bulge somewhat sideways, and lengthen forwards a lot. This lengthening improves grip and lowers the load on the parts of the rubber which are on the ground. But ... no one mentions that many punctures happen on the side walls, and if the sidewalls bulge outwards, I reckon they are more vulnerable than having less bulge and hence lower profile tyres.

If you doing things adventurous its better to do it with another vehicle!
