Maybe CV problem?

Hi all,

I recently got myself a 1995 Camry Vienta in excellent condition with 110K on the clock.

Only problem is that when turning I’m get a thumping sound (kinds like the sound an out of round tyre makes). In a straight line there’s no problem. I am guessing that the CV joints need replacing. I am guessing because it the first front wheel drive car I have owned. My pristine (haven’t uses it yet) Haynes manual says a worn CV joints makes a clicking noise or a shudder or vibration. It’s not any of these (well it could be a shudder but I cant feel anything at the steering wheel). Anyone had experience with this model and could give me some direction?

I have had a variety of FWD cars since the 60's and have never had to replace a CV joint yet at least not the jont itself. I have pulled a few of them apart and serviced them, but never replaced. The thing to do is do visual checks on the rubber boots and check for ANY damage such as cracking or splits and if found get the boots replaced ASAP.

One method I was given the physically check them was to drive the car in reverse in a circle and listen for abnormal clicking sounds.

It should be remebered though there are many areas in the suspension and steering which can do all of the things you are concerned about, such as steering rack, ball joints, disc brake rotors warped just to mention a few.

I have the same problem with click sounds when turn left/right.

Replace CV join the right turn click sound is gone but the left turn still has sound.

Mechanist said the sound from auto gear box ! but no safe concerns so he recomended kept driving for few years and replace second hand auto gear box.

Mine is Toyota Camry 95

the previous owner probley ran it into the gutter a few too many times and gave it a good knock about :(

my mate had the same problem in his car and it was the CV's

bit pricey to fix, but well worth it!
