  1. The guy at my safe driving course was of the opinion that higher pressures (~250 kPa, probably around 35-36 psi) were better from a safety standpoint.

Doing the things you do there, with skid pans and excessive speeds I agree wholeheartedly.

  2. The guy at my safe driving course was of the opinion that higher pressures (~250 kPa, probably around 35-36 psi) were better from a safety standpoint.

I heard that as well, cannot recall his exact reasoning but it was something to do with having more tyre surface in contact with the road. In the Sportivo I prefer to get about on 34 psi as my daily drive and don't mind the bit of ride comfort I sacrifice for the responsiveness and better handling I get in return. And before I go on a monthly meet when we're going to cruise I bump it up to 36 to compensate for the freeway drive down and the driving we do during the day so they don't end up losing too much.

Softer tyre more road contact, bigger tyre surface contact. I'll keep an eye on tyre wear as I feel this could be a problem Due to front wheel drive.

  3. Travelling on the freeways at any speed from 110kms - 120kms the steering wheel feels quite unstable. Has anyone else experienced this? Is it down to the wheels itself?

MAYBE YOUR SCARING THE HELL OUT OF IT? Ha Ha just kidding!! 120kph Hope you don't live in Vic: Four things it could be, wheel alignment, or more likely out of balance or out of round or warped wheel.

  4. Much has been said about correct tyre pressure, profile and size (tyres that is). Main topics relate to performance, followed by economy but very little, about what the Pneumatic Tyre was originally designed to provide, a comfortable ride with improved handling as a by-product. This thread has been placed with a hope to encourage comments and help in regard to improving comfort and the various aspects tyres play as part of this equation. Take my car for instance. A 1999 Vienta designed for comfort, silence and prestige, (while still being no slouch to performance), which is usually driven in a sedate fashion in keeping with my age. While my previous car a Ford Fairmont, a car of approx similar size and weight and yes rear wheel drive with exactly the same size tyres 205 65 15, used recommended tyre pressures for normal around town driving of 26psi front and 28psi rear. My Vienta has recommended tyre pressures of 32psi front and rear and as a result gives a harsher ride and I suggest places much more stress and strain on all steering and suspension bushes and parts than would a lower tyre pressure. Having checked with various organizations knowledgeable in these things Ive' dropped my tyre pressures to 28psi front and rear and find this much more acceptable. Yes I will put them up to 32psi on any extended trips in the country etc: I realize the lower tyre pressures might cause varying results, hopefully only marginally on steering and handling, not quite as good wet and a little better in dry conditions but I'm willing to trade those off and take it easy. All HELP AND INPUT APPRECIATED.

  5. CAN YOU HELP? There have been many threads on this subject but I've yet to find one with specific info: For type of finish. IE:- Clear coated and or raw polished alloy. If for instance an abrasive cleaner such as Silvo or some of the abrasive products designed for polished alloy were used on clear coated surfaces, good-by clear coat! Specific info: on products for either of these could be appreciated by many members.

  6. I've neglected this for a while now because I've been too lazy to do anything about it.

From the top, left side of the dash, I got an annoying tapping sound when going over bumps or there is a bump in the road etc.

It sounds like someone is tapping thin plastic sheets. Ever since I got my car I've been trying to pin point where the noise is coming from, but for the life of me I can't figure out where its coming from.

Is it somewhere on the exterior of the dash or is it something inside of the dash? I've searched and of course there are heaps of threads about this, but mine sounds like its coming exclusively from the left side. As I said, it sounds LIKE its coming from the top of the dash but I'm NOT 100% sure. No other part of the dash rattles, squeaks etc. Its completely quiet, except that tap part that sounds like tapping plastic when I go over bumps.

Here, I've circled where it sounds LIKE where the sound is coming from. I could be completely wrong but from my observation it sounds somewhere around that area.

Sure its not something in your glove box? Or as the glove box is the only moveable thing around that area try running with the glove box open, just to isolate it from a possible cause!!!!

  7. The gen4's are OBD2 but they has to be read from the mechanics. Unless you own the special $8000-15000 scanner that mechanics use. NONE of the cheapy scanners will read it (I have one :( ). However all you need to do is short out 2 pins (TC and E1) in the engine bay and your check engine light will flash you the code.

Connection to (TC and EI) is correct for I believe checking spark advance but that is not the OBD port its the Diagnostic port. Correct location of the OBD port marked OBD- not OBD2 is under the drivers side dash close to the side panel. You have to get down real low to locate it as it faces downwards. Its a lot smaller than I thought it would be.

  8. Never use Armor All they are crap tbh... Meguiars, Mothers, Bowens and Autoglm are the good entry level automotive care products...

Used Armour All on an Ausy Skyline from new for 16 years and vinyl was as good as new when I parted company with it. As suggested elsewhere vinyl cracked after use was stopped, I never stopped using it so cant vouch for what would have happened if I'd stopped using it but then again how bad would it have been if I never used anything from the start anyway.

  9. Water Spots

Water spots are caused when a vechile is not dried properly.

Regular water from taps contain minerals such as Calcium and metals which when left to dry in the sun can etch itself into your cars paint work. Rain water can contain more harmful elements such as acid which wil cause more damage faster.

The best way to prevent water spots it to make sure your car is dried properly after a wash. It is recommended to use a good Microfibre Waffle Weave towel as these are highly absorbent and is soft enought so it doesnt induce any swirl marks on the paint while drying. I also like to follow it up with a smaller Waffle Weave towel to ensure that I have not missed any areas.

If you notice any water spots on your vehicle when it is dry, attend to it straight away with some Quick Detailer and MF towel. If it does not wipe off then it needs to be polished out with some fine to medium abrasive polish.

Water spots can be a pr!ck to remove when left to bake in so the quicker you attend to it the easier it will be.

Here is what a water spot looks like. Wipe with QD and towel. It should remove the dry minerals but if you still can see the outline of the spot then that is when it has caused damage to the paint.

    Cheers :)

    Dave

You haven't mentioned bird droppings. My panel shop suggested boiling water on etched droppings but it will only work if it hasn't been touched with polish etc and I've had success with this. Haven't had reason to try this on water spots but maybe worth a try! ;)

  10. Does anyone know if the 4CYL 1998 Toyota Camry is OBD II compliant

On my 1999 Vienta V6 (i think both 4s and 6es have the same OBD? setup. The so called OBD port is in the engine bay but it aint OBD anything, the pin out layout is entirely different to OBD2 and on the lid its named DIAGNOSTIC. the pin out is on the underneath of the lid a series of initial's that's double dutch to me, 7 of the pins are fitted in mine.I contacted Toyota Australia and asked if they could help me with what the pin outs related to and also if they could also give me the pin out for the ECU but was told no one there could help me with either.Strange!they make them but don,t seem to know what they are. Told me a dealer would help me and guess what a dealer has offered to send me the info: If I receive the info I'll pass it on along with my praise for the sender.

EDIT:- received nothing!! By the way its the diagnostic port not the OBD port that's in the engine bay. On my 1999 model Vienta the OBD port is under the dash drivers side towards the side panel, you'll have to get down real low to identify it as it points downwards. Mine is marked OBD without a 1 or 11 after it.

  11. Problem with moon roof switch. Can anyone help? Problem! When closing, in slide position, if you don't take your finger off the switch at the exact moment it gets to the closed location, it just carries on without a pause to the open the tilt position. Should there be a cutout or pause between these two actions, as its very difficult to judge the exact moment when its in the fully closed position. HELP PLEASE

    Any SUGGESTIONS?

  12. Hi All,

I've noticed lately that the panel gap between the drivers door panel and dashboard is uneven on my 1999 Camry - its tight at the top and becomes increasingly wider. On certain road surfaces, the top of the panel rubs against the dash and rattles. Looking at other Gen 4's, it appears part of my door trim around the tweeter is not sitting as tight anymore which is creating the uneven gap.

What is the best fix here?

Has the door been replaced in the past and if so, it could be an el cheapo non genuine door, which I understand don't measure up in fit and quality of genuine part.

  13. Hey guys

quick question, can you get K & N replacement filters that would fit into a 2002 Camary Sportivo?

    Cheers, Wellsie

From what I've read about plausible improvements, I Understand improvement may be !% or 2% . Is it worth it?

  14. Has anyone heard or used Martini engine oil ? My usual workshop recommend this brand but I think it's just too unheard of ?

    Regards.

A Martini is a mixed drink. So is the oil also a mix of different oils?

  15. Hi to all.

I have been really impressed by the help you have all given to each other, eg DJKOR, and hoping for some helpful advice to a problem. My wife and myself purchased a 2009 Aurion, are both app 70 years of age, travel a lot but, find ourselves with a sore backside problem after an hour or so. Purchased a 600 dollar set of sheepskin covers, all to no avail. Before the Aurion ,we had a 1997 Magna and had no problems.Maybe our age has some input, but am hoping some kind sole will respect my request, and provide a practical solution for us.

    Thanks in advance,

    FLNJ.

A good trimmer could have reshaped the seats to suit you for around that price.

  16. So i was very bored today and decided that because im going through a cleaning phase on my car, that i would clean the upper and lower intake manifold. Those of you who know the 1MZ know that the fuel rails are connected to the lower section (this stopped me cleaning before) but not this time. In the process of taking them out, i have broken on of the O-ring seals so i subsequently have to buy a new one, my dad suggested that i buy all 6 while i have the engine in peices anyway. <_<

I have a couple of questions for anyone who can help:

    - If i just go to an auto store like; supercheap, auto1 will they have the kit? and how much roughly?

    - is it worth me going to a wrecker and just buying second hand injectors of an engine with less kilometers?

    - Do i have the option of putting bigger injectors ie: 2jz, 3mz? will it give me any power gains?

Thanks heaps in advance, oh an for those who are interested i will soon make a post in the 'Member Ride' section with my build so far and pictures of what i get up to when im bored :P

Its wise to use new O rings whenever removing and replacing injectors.

  17. Hi guys, I've been looking for ages and I cant seem to find my OBD2 port. Its a vienta 96 model if your wondering.

Not sure about 96 model but next model ie: 98 -2000 OBD2 port is in the engine bay passenger side up towards fire wall, looks a bit like another fuse box maybe yours is the same.By the way I dought it will be OBD2 compliant, probably only pinned out to meet Toyotas own specs like mine.

  18. I work for a dealer.

One thing I dont think any owners appreciate is that unless you can replicate and demonstrate the squeak/rattle/pop there's no way on earth any dealer can fix it. Simple as that.

And by demonstrate I dont mean just telling the Service advisor that it "happens whenever I go through the speed hump in my neighbourhood", but to grab a technician on a test drive and show him the sound while you are driving. If you cant replicate the sound on a test drive, the dealer have no chance of locating the issue and fix it.

Whilst I agree with you guys that no owner should be experiencing those faults that you mentioned, the dealers do need your help in locating the fault as you spend a vast amount of time in your car, whereas they can only spend the hour or so.

If you can show the tech where and how the rattle is occuring, I can guarantee they can at the very least put in a temporary fix, especially in a car as simple as the Aurion.

great advice suggest you follow it up and suggest putting your claims in writing with date and time delivered to service department make sure it is attached to your agreement you sign for work to be done and request a copy given back to you includes your document initialed by them. That way preferably before but if even after your warranty runs out you would have the proof to pursue whatever action you wish to take. Why not try trade practices or the Ombudsman for starters. Let them know your intentions. It might give you a more positive reaction.

  19. Hey all

Im having issues with my dash lights not working when the lights are on, all my tail lights, head lights and that work but its just the dash lights. A friend goes could be earth wire but where would I be looking for on that?? Also I dont have a handbook (hence no cash for one atm), can anyone with a 88 toyota camry take a picture of their fuse cover lid so I know what fuses are what so I can suss them out as well?

    Cheers

Try the Wreckers for an owners manual they would probably give it to you if your a regular customer or charge you very little for one. Alternatively if you see another car like yours in a convenient location explain your position and ask if you can look for what you want from their manual.

  20. First of all, what specifically are you looking for? My Gregory's for the Gen3 has all that I needed.

Preferably diagram showing pin location and numbers and wire colors. I'll look for a Gregorys,I believe Haynes bought them out and took them off the market. Previous car was a Falcon things like this and various other items were much easier to find and heaps more info available but that's the nature of the beast. Vienta is a far superior car and a somewhat different concept without the need or backing for as many after market appropriations. LOVE MY VIENTA GRANDE

  21. Can anyone help. Need ECU pin out details for 1999 Camry (Vienta) V6.have searched previous forums ETC ETC but no luck Thanks in anticipation. Only workshop manual about is Haynes. I've got one and its crap as far as I'm concerned. Suggest, try and find a Max ELLerys or Gregorys even though I know it wouldn't have the info I need
