  1. To expand on what I already said, just measure the volume of your current overflow tank and buy an aftermarket one of similar volume. They commonly come in cylinder shapes though which may require a little bit of creativity to mount, but others are available if you search hard enough.

    Also expanding thanks again!

  2. I saw this on another forum and thought it was kinda interesting... :P

This is a place to just post exactly what it says... what you did to your car today. Anything from just washing/cleaning to mods or whatever.

Put silver pin stripes from front of window chrome surround to front of car and from rear of window surround to rear of car also added 12mm red reflective pinstripe to bottom of those horrible skinny tail lights on the 1999 Vienta. Makes them look better balanced.

  3. I noted from a previous thread that the plastic overflow tanks are prone to cracking and on inspecting mine found it to be cracked across the top. My car is a 1999 model Camry-Vienta. Does anyone know if there is an after market stainless steel tank available for these cars. Replacement should be easy as there appears to be just one bolt holding it in place plus the rubber tube.

  5. Hey guys, hope your all well.

Now some time next month i will have my car serviced and i was thinking that it's maybe about time i did something about some form of paint protection etc. Now at work we offer a full Wynns paint protection pack (there’s also a leather interior one too) so i was thinking about having that one done? also even though Toyota's bodies are dipped in an anti corrosion formula we also fit an anti-rust module to most of the cars that head over to king Island and the people over there swear by them, so I’m just interested in what other people have done in the way of paint protection etc, if anything at all??

A previous car I owned and covered 260,000Ks in over a period of sixteen years only ever got a rub on, rub off of Maguires wet look when ever the surface water stopped beeding and perhaps on rare occasions a wax, I cant quite remember! The paint however was still just as shiny as new when I parted company with it.

  6. hey guys

sorry to dig this VERY VERY OLD thread from the dead,

:o why do people charge ridicious amounts of money for just a change in a coolant overfill bottle?

for the sxv20r series of camry's it takes 1min to remove, and another 5-10mins to replace (including replacing it with new coolant).

only reason is i was detailing my engine yesterday, and as i was wiping my coolant bottle, it broke in2 many different bits (the top corners that is). i was somewhat annoyed that most japanese cars have plastics that cant withstand heat, which funnily enough, the contents of the bottle is used to cool a heating engine. pathetic. just pathetic.

anyway, was calling everywhere and its the same standard price of $45-$50. i'll check out the wreakers on the weekend to see if there are good 2nd hand ones (highly unlikely though), but yes, charging in excess of $118 for a 30sec clipon for a pathetic plastic bottle (that will brittle soon) and adding coolant, is excessive.

Does anyone know if there is a stainless steel after market bottle available?

  7. i'm still realistically about a month away, and urs will be one of the first gen5s wont it?

You'll win. I'm looking at around 1.5-2months at this stage.

Besides the RS01 Camry toyota made, this as far as I know will be the first documented Gen 5's with the Supercharger

    Headlight restoration!

I used a headlight restoration kit from super cheap, came with sandpaper from 1000 grit to 2500, all wet, plus some plastic polish that was pretty crappy, grabbed my bottle of PlastiX and that worked much better. Can anyone recommend something a bit stronger then PlastiX that wont ruin my headlights? They're polycarbonate.

I wasn't particularly impressed with PlastiX at all. The 3M headlight restoration kit gets a decent wrap on the net.

For a good Finnish try toothpaste and its also cheap!

Lifted the bonnet cleaned the engine bay, mostly just needed a wipe with a rag will polish paint work soon. Removed, under coated and chrome painted three fuse covers, cruse control cover and engine platic cover. Looks great and didn't take long..

  9. i always use castrol magnatec, have been on the last two cars. my dealers service department uses the same oil.

all the oils are made to strict tolerances so it doesnt make a huge impact on the brand u use.

    my 35 dinaro's worth

The Magnatec your dealer uses could apparently be different to what you buy at retail outlets!!! And that came to me from a phone call to Castrol.

  10. hey guys... can anyone recommend engine oil for our sportivo's?

since its a high revving engine shouldn't fully synthetic be the optimum? ;)

and the thinner the better? suggestions appreciated :P

5000 or 10000km oil changes depend on your driving style and type of driving your doing.these are covered in, I cant remember which but it's either your owners manual or service manual that comes with the car. I notice from the documentation returned from dealer services that they add a flush to the oil and run that through for about 10 minutes before draining. My car is a1999 Vienta so I don' know if this still applies to more modern cars. The other point to remember is to make sure you don't go over six months between oil changes irrespective of distance covered. My oil changes are done at about 2500 to 3500KS because that's all I cover these days in six months. Regarding viscosity the numbers IE 0/40, 10/40, 15/50 relate to the viscosity of the oil when cold and hot. Oils with a low viscosity of 0 while needed in cold countries are not needed in Aus as a general rule unless you live in the snow covered Alps etc: With our climate a 10 + or 15 + oil should be ideal in most circumstances. Only loss in performance. economy, or rapid circulation on start up would be infinitesimal for the first couple of minutes or so on starting a cold engine. Happy motoring.

  11. Hi came across an excellent info place just enter Autospeed on the internet and click on the first or third entry and enjoy. Covers heeps of topics Get on it and don't be surprised if your there for ages. Covers things like exhausts how they work, what to expect etc. or oil,how to read the rating etc. and a variety of goody's and add ons within some cases how to fit them in your car. Plus plus plus.

  12. If you expect ANY spoiler on a road-car to make a difference in down force then you are gravelly mistaken. It is only once you get significantly above the open-road speed limit before a boot-spoiler will produce noticeable rear downforce.

If properly designed and positioned should give you something slight from as low as 60kph or lower. Look at this being an upside down aero wing, gliders start lifting off the ground with people in them at around this speed or slower. The stall speed of a tiger moth aircraft was 45mph (approx 72kph) with a crew of two and that is ancient technology. Point taken you did say noticeable? down force .

  13. Seeing as the majority of Toyotas are front wheel drive, one has to question the use of the rear deck spoilers on these cars. I'm not questioning the the merits of the advantage of down force on the back wheels but rather due to the positioning of the spoiler on the rear of the rear deck behind the rear wheels eg place some bricks or better still some bluestone blocks right at the back of your boot and see what happens. Stacks of load (down force) on the back wheels but walla' whats happening to the front, up in the air and reduced traction on the front wheels where you need it most. I realize this is an exageration but none the less it is well founded. Remember the days when the little Mini coopers zipped around Bathhurst thrashing the V Eights and all the rest going around corners with the outside back wheel well off the ground. If only they would let us compete with one of our V sixes now, I reckon the result would be the same. 1st 2nd 3rd Toyota.

  14. fj comming here Website

Finally they are bring it out here , have emailed toyota and will see what they say ...

Seen these everywhere in the states last year and have wanted one ever since ...

Lucky too , was very close to buying a jeep wrangler as its about the only other 4WD we like ...

    [/quot

Hmmm FJ As I remember that was the second Holden to be produced, different grill to the original late 1940's early 1950's. Oh well it was a great car for its time I suppose.

  15. People who don't indicate when using roundabouts...what am i a freakin mind reader.

People who dont even look when entering round abouts and expect everyone else to stop for them.!!

The way I see it . The rules are there and providing they are adhered to in a reasonable and safe manner then there is no reason for any retribution or the necessity to do anything else other than to make way for an incompetent driver who would otherwise cause an accident. My rule is treat every other driver (not that they are) as an idiot and make allowances for them. Better to be safe than sorry.

  16. [quote name='mannyMANNYmanny' date='Feb 9 2010, 11:53 PM' post='375635'Hi

Hi if they charged you for the time between the time it ran out to the time you paid the rego this would then suggest the car has been accepted as being registered for the full 12 months part of it being retrospective. Or would I be right in suggesting the payment could otherwise be seen as being fraudulent if it didn't cover you for the full 12 months. If covered for the full 12 months and you were driving the car prior to paying the rego and had an accident or were picked up for some misdemeanor. Shouldn't the car be seen as having been registered at that time, upon payment of the rego, retrospectively speaking. Could be worth a legal opinion!

  17. At least toyota has recognized where it has gone wrong, and are being open about it. This will cost them a lot now, but they will benefit greatly in the future to it.

Also this has hardly damaged the reputation of toyota, ask any non-car enthusiast to describe a toyota, and they will say 'reliable'

Are they still reliable? In terms of fit and finish and mechanical? Has the quality of these cars dropped in recent years from where they were to have achieved the said repuatation?

I'd just like to know because i'm thinking of buying one for the first time.

I need an absolutely unbiased opinion though.

You can always go one better and buy a Lexus. Higher price more prestige.

  18. hey all.

been a while since i posted, hope all ur toyotas are going strong still.

just a small problem with mine, about a month ago i went to put my high beams on and....nothing. kinda annoying, since i previously had a prblem with the headlight relay i thought that was the culperate so i went to toyota and spent $44 for a brand new one, hoping that it would do the job.....nothing

    thanks

Hi, stupid question I suppose> but surely the first thing to check would be the fuse yet it has not been mentioned so I can only believe it is too incidental or has been overlooked. Not sure about your car but on other makes I have owned there is also a fuseable link although this usually blinks the lights to allow some vision to give you the opportunity to come to a stop.

  19. Hi not sure it is possible but has there been any thought to placing new replies first instead of last. For instance on opening an item your hit with the same outdated replies you've seen as many times as you've been to that sight with the latest relevant replies hidden up to 40 or even more pages! back. BACKWARD THOUGHTS!!!

  20. Hey guy/girls

I tried things like cleaning away corrosion on battery terminals and looking for loose wiring but still it persists. But when I disconnect battery (positive and negative) for over 15 mins and connect it the problem will stop for a couple of days.

If i remember right when you disconnect the battery for over 15 mins its resets the ECU, correct me if im wrong.

Sounds like you might have solved your own problem. Surely your dealer can try a swap with one of the cars in their yard to determine if for starters, if it is the computer or whatever else and replace the faulty item when determined. Even if they charge you for the time it takes to do the swaps. By the way a change over computer ie: rebuilt computer will cost a lot less than a new one. I had reason to use a change over computer years ago and it lasted 14 years and was still good when I got rid of the car whereas the original carked it after only 2 years Only One year warranties at those times. My problem was similar to yours and it got progressively worse. If your dealer wont help take your car to someone who will and get your future work done by them.

  21. yep so I'll keep going at it since ScratchX is mild

I've read the previous post and have done the finger test, it doesn't really catch the finger nail but can feel them

I don't know if my car has clear coat, maybe I should ask in the Camry forum first

not sure if I described it popularly but bunch of scratch is like an area of parallel scratches (back and forth motion 5 times by scourer sponge)

so polish (eg. Wetlook Cleaner Wax) can only improve the gloss but not restore reflection yeah?

if to see if its working I should see reflection straight after ScratchX?

Don't go too hard for if you go through the clear coat it will stay dull. The two pack paint being used on new cars consists of dull colour coats covered by gloss clear coats. So if you go through the clear coat all that is left is the flat colour coat. Happened to my neighbor.

  22. We've brought a 2009 Tarago. My wife just told me that the cruise control seems to have problem.

    1) The speedometer is not accurate.

    Do you have similar issues?

The difference to speed you quoted ie doing 90KPH and reading 100KPH shows an error of over ten percent so if 10 percent is the criteria then it should be fixed. However, are the tyres and wheels, as supplied by the maker? You could overcome the speedo error to some degree by fitting slightly larger wheels or Tyres or higher profile tyres. Tyre shops should be able to calculate a right mix. Be careful not to exceed regulations. As has been well covered here cruise controls don't supply stopping power but I believe there is the possibility of gaining some engine retardation if taken out of overdrive. not sure if this works with cruise control on though.

  23. Hi,

My initial 3 year warranty expired a couple of months ago. Now I am on the extended 3 year warranty with fixed price services (It came with the car when a bought it new). What I hadn't taken much notice before but the extended warranty agreement states that the services are to be every 10K. This doesn't follow the service book.

Has anyone else got an extended warranty ? Bummer

    Thanks

Would I be right, that the fixed price is set according to the service book recommendation and as there is no costing for the specified service then this should be done freeeeeeeeee. HA HA! Suggest you try to come to an agreement to have the servicing done according to the service book and do an oil change every 5000K or 7500Ks

  24. My steering wheel starts to shudder or shake when you apply the brakes to the car when it is going over 100km/h..

Is this expectable from a Gen 5 camry (kinda like the handbrake roll) or is this something i should get looked at?

    Thanks for any help :)

Hi had the same problem awhile ago. Front pads had been replaced with ceramic fortified pads, these were replaced at no cost as they apparently were having some sought of problem with them at that time. Discs were also reground at the same time. Worth attending to, as if not fixed I believe can lead to premature wear to front end parts eg ball joints.

  25. OP did you know that camrys come with a SPARE TIRE in the boot!!!!!!!!!! :o

Mine has two!------------ JUST KIDDING. Thanks for all the response, guess its hard to get the correct interpretation to what one means but its been fun and hopefully helpful CHEERS
