  1. this better not make toyotas more expensive dammit! lol...

It might! specially some spare parts.... much like trying buy bannanas atm..... or even get this! went to bunning last week to buy a 1xltr can of white paint and was told told none in stock due to the floods in qld, appar it's not production but the extreme drain on supply as everyone repaints their houses.

So as the thousands and thousands of cars need new parts i'm sure we will see a drain of supply of genuine parts downunder and of course a possible cost hike :(

thats all well and good but I don't use bananas to fix my car lol... :P

  2. Don't quote me but I have heard of some heavy duty clutches doing this...

I used to have an 83 Honda Accord and even tho it wasn't a performance vehicle (really) when bits broke i was in the habit of getting them replaced with long-life / heavy duty replacement parts. I had an Exceedy heavy duty clutch in that and had the same issue... I found that if i picked the revs up a little more to take off and learnt to operate it differently I had no problems at all and better response taking off at higher revs... but like I said don't quote me, it may not be normal for urs to do that... I guess live with it for the moment and if the shuddering starts to get worse or it becomes unbearable have it looked at...

  3. nice rims, nice height, looks the goods

maybe a dual outlet exhaust tip welded on to match to your outter rims - not sure your going to get any performance benefit with this car so no point blowing cash on an exhaust, or sri for that matter.

    whitestivo

short ram air intake cost me $68 posted from the states and sounds pretty good... cat back exhaust will cost me $250 with a twin chrome tip... $300 to make it sound nice really isn't a waste of money... and the way its getting done will increase power output...

  4. well i guess the false alarm was wrong... turns out it was the short ram air intake...

    20 mins later...

    new019.jpg

can't say I've encounted any issues yet... MAF plugs in OK and it hasn't thrown any error codes at me... i've got the old air intake in the back just incase I encounter any issues and my tools... quick 5 mins on the side of the road to change it back if need be... I know it only pushes air thru but it was still a cheap purchase off eBay...

as for the power it seems to be the same... but I did put my DRIFT filter on that was a bit longer than the cheap one that came with it... also serviced it while I was putting it in... next task is to locate the resonator in the front wheel arch and cut it open for more air... the top end of the resonator points straight at the filter... sounds pretty good tho... not as good as the EG Civic did, but the top end is raspier... i was surprised...

  5. The Corolla Sportivo is a very popular model car and have retained their value well. I can't see why Toyota wouldn't, but then again its an older model now, so possibly not...

Another option would to be to try www.wholesalecarparts.com.au or All Jap Auto Spares... they import stuff from Japan and might be able to find a front end wreck Sportivo from Japan and pilfer the rear bar...

    Just a couple of ideas...

  6. false alarm... i think its just my sons passport... however the suspension side of things is coming along well... got the passenger side shock installed after much stuffing around doing it the hardway to avoid any setbacks only to find that the easy way was, for once, the easiest way, without murphy's law coming into effect...

i forgot to put the bump stop on and had to strip it down and do it over... however after the hour and a half "hard way" followed by the half hour "easy way", the second time I did the easy way it took me 15 mins start to finish... hopefully it will only take me 15 mins to do the drivers side...

  7. Update - air intake has arrived. Pick it up tomorrow morning. So a steady day ahead working on the rolla. Just picked up my KYB heavy duty fronts and will endeavor to get the passenger side (problem side) done first. Considerable visual difference just looking at them. Main gas strut is thicker for one. Have further considered the process and have realized that it will be less, let's say "intensive" to swap the struts as opposed to the springs. Lol :P

  8. Well the air intake is on the back burner atm for 2 reasons -

    1) waiting for the part to come from america still, and

    2) have a suspension issue I need to resolve ASAP... needless to say it resulted from this -

    new017.jpg

Superlows on the front look freakin sweet, but aren't too functional when u have a collapsed gas strut :( so today will be spent pricing up a replacement front set for as cheap as possible and then rushing like a mofo to install it. The OEM shock that isn't rooted held up well so hopefully that is a good sign... Clearance is awesome... lol...

    new018.jpg

and as for my civic... it wasn't too bad... was gonna be a good little project until it got hailed on and written off and not worth anything...

  9. Maybe up in QLD? Not in NSW though i don't think.. my old man got defected on his rolla with a pod where the above pic shows.. then again the cop defected him for a sealed oil catch can system  Quite akin to shoot first, ask questions later but hey we've come to expect that from the bad apples in the force hey.

OP, let us know when you get the $35 intake, i'm curious hehe. I would daresay modifying the standard airbox will be the best bet. I did that once with one of my previous cars (3mps 1st gen) and cut a ~15cm diameter circle on the bottom part of the box and had cold air directed at it. I also took to the inside of the airbox and removed all the plastic lining and smoothed things over a bit and that made a good noticeable difference (along with the K&N filter). And yeah stock standard looking/sleepers FTW! I only did the rolla because i got too bored and ran outta things to do to the weekender, and even that i try to make it look standard/no bright colours.

Btw, hope you don't mind my asking, but was it a hardcore EG?

Hiro, did you notice a performance increase with poggy's intake?

Ahhhhh... hiro is doing it right, because he kept the reservoir that fills up and gives u instant response... "like"

  10. Over the time I have had help to solve some problems and I have observed the forum, I have seen a decline in the interest of the forum "Corolla Sportivo". The reason I believe this is the case; the Factory have stopped the production of the Corolla Sportivo and the problems that plague the 2003/2005 Sportivo have been highlighted and are archived in this forum. The other reason is that people sell their cars and the new owners haven't found the delights of this particular forum. In saying all of this I am biased against the 2003 Corolla Sportivo. I can understand if a "newbie" searches to no avail for an answer to his problem, they also may not understand the terminology of what they are asking for, so it is important that the questions are continuous and free ranging (within reason). I hope the questions and discussion do not dry up, and we can all enjoy, repair, make better and admire the sacred vehicle that Toyota has blessed us with.

    Amen.

    Luke.

I agree, but when u get ppl posting messages that are simple that they could look up the yellow pages for its rather annoying... some ppl are lazy and expect everything handed to them... technical questions or opinions and questions on other ppl set ups (as long as they are positive and non derogatory opinions) are good and informative.

"does anyone know the phone number for tyre king at ......." is crap...

    end rant...

    :D

  11. Basically, there is a long plastic duct that runs from the bottom of the airbox to the front of the engine bay just behind the passenger headlight. Now halfway along this duct on the bottmo, there is a short length of plastic that connects it to a resonator box a little smaller in size to a 1 litre tin of milo. I cut open the front half of this resonator box, leaving the back half which now acts as a scoop/ram forcing air up back into the intake duct and thus into the airbox.

Seems to breathe much better having two intakes and one is forcing air into when the car is moving. Also on the ae112r, there is a bumper plastic trim bit that once removed reveals the resonator box and thus allowing air to go straight onto it.

From memory, the ae101 didn't have this option but you can create a scoop under the car that still leads to the resonator box.

Still, your short ram intake might be alright, i noticed in the picture it's going to be a 3" pipe with a stepdown reducer at the throttle body. I'm tempted to try one myself, only 35us heh.

i gotcha, so its sorta cylinder shaped and u just open the end up... nice...

the set up on the short ram air intake i'm STILL waiting for (lol) is almost identical to the one I had on my EG Civic. The only difference is instead of a vaccum hose male end it needs a 4mm - 5mm or so round hole with a rubber gromit so that u can plug the MAF sensor into it, otherwise its going to be error codes galore. If the one i've bought for the 7A-FE doesn't work, i'm gonna have a go at modifying my simota intake... failing that I'll just swiss cheese the original air box, put a K&N Panel filter in and sell the other 2 intakes to somebody else... lol

I kinda like the idea of swiss cheesing the original air box anyway over anything else because if I get done for anything and they look under the hood its all gonna look stock standard... even if this works I'm thinking of doing mod to the original box anyway just for something different... so i can feel all sneaky and stealth... hehe :whistling:

  12. Thanks for the link, looks great for the price although you will need to shield the filter otherwise it's just gonna suck hot useless air.

I'm using a K&N pod filter so i know the filter is good. I know why it lost low down though and to be honest it was expected knowing i'm removing the air box which like you said has a volume of air stored in it. The lower air velocity will also hurt low and mid range torque..just i didn't quite expect Toyota to have done the airbox for the 7afe so well, to the point where the high end gains from the short ram intake are barely noticeable. Still, i like the sound lol. Currently my short ram intake is partitioned off from the rest of the engine bay (heat) and i've also left the lower half of the factory airbox and modified resonator to give two feeds of cold air onto the bottom of the filter.

To be honest, i think the modified stock arrangement is the best go. Prior to my short ram intake, i was running the factory box, pipe and a K&N panel filter. I also cut open the resonator box in front of the passenger wheel (the resonator tee's off the factory intake piping) and that also acted as a secondary/ram intake for when the car was moving forcing air into the intake. Also removed the little resonator near the firewall on the inlet pipe.

All of this made it perform a fair bit better on the already good factory arrangement imho. Your AE101 will also have this resonator behind the bumper/front of passenger wheel and from memory it will be black plastic whereas the ae112r's is white plastic.

Post up your results once you're done, i'm keen to see how it goes for you! :)

I'm not one who likes to open stuff up and cut things up... however Mick.Wheelz is putting my suspension in tomorrow for me so I might have a squizzy around while i'm in there... what do u mean exactly by "cutting it open"... precisely what did u do to open it up?

  13. Im Looking for the spoiler to fit corolla csi Limited hatch '94. Willing to pay. any colour going to respray anyway. If you have one or know where to get one please let me know. :) see pic if unsure about type of car

    Hey mate,

have you tried looking on eBay? I just had a quick look on there and couldn't find anything. Shy of that, I think you'd probably have to get something custom made. Also try twincam.org, more older corollas on there so might be a better chance of finding it on there...

other than those I'm fresh outta ideas dude...

  14. I just did my own short ram intake on my ae112 and it was all kinds of fail for performance =(

Lost alot of low and mid range oomph..doesn't really show gains till 4k or maybe even higher.

On the upside, the engine sounds really really good though, very throaty and has some bark now...too bad it still needs the bite to go with it lol.

Do you mind linking the site in the US you bought the intake from? I wonder if they have anymore parts for the 7afe.

    http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=140508221709&viewitem=&sspagename=STRK%3AMEWNX%3AIT

not sure how it will go, but worth a try... if it isn't any good I have another plan I can try...

the reason that you may have lost performance is the air reservoir in the original OEM air box and pipe... basically it "pre-sucks" the air if you will, and store it in this reservoir, so when you need the power its already filled up in the pipe and it just forces it into the motor and replenishes it. What brand of filter are you using because that can also add to the problem.

If my short ram air intake doesn't do the job I want it to, then I'm going to stick with the OEM box, put a K&N panel filter in, and swiss cheese it with some holes for extra noise... and then I'll have 2 short ram air intakes up for sale :P

  15. Im a "newbie" at "THIS" forum, Just a hint from one "newbie" to another. PLEASE READ this Covered Topics . It just takes common sence to search the forums before wasting peoples time with new topics. Id say this was a helpful link for me but im not stupid, take the time to search before posting a new topic and you wont cop as much (insert Swear starting with "S")

    Peace JJ

but still, it ain't gonna do much good i don't think... but worth a try... lol...

was actually having a discussion about this last nite at the weekly brisbane meet with someone and it just seems that people nowadays don't know how to look for anything themselves... they expect just to ask a question and have everyone barrelling towards them with answers and forthcoming information... its like "God dammit guys, everyone else had to find out for themselves, what makes u so darn special"... so lets hope they read this post... :toast:

  16. What would make for a good suspension upgrade?

King Lows... 16" Rims - but make sure u get ur offset right because if you lower it and put rims on that are too wide u'll hit ur wheel arches and scrub every time u go around a corner from body roll.... As well as this you could possibly look at front and rear sway bars and a front strut brace... This will assist in stiffening the ride and reducing body roll...

Body kits are OK, but in my opinion, on a lot of cars they look a bit ****y, but once again thats a personal choice thing and more than likely depends on the style of the body kit - some can look good... I prefer the no kit and slammed suspension look lol...

Engine-wise you could look at some sort of a short ram air intake or full cold air intake system with pod filter and heat sheild... The throttle body off a 1.5L engine providing it fits, and a full exhaust with headers, hi flow cat, and some sort of hi flow muffler...

It all depends on how much you want to spend. These are all the cheap options to make the car look nice, respond a little quicker and handle better and make it a little more tough. This is pretty much the same formula I use when I mod a car because I'm cheap and nasty and usually can't afford to get good things done to the internals of engines... lol...
