  1. pffft, real men shift with their ears, not with their eyes.......try driving an old car, without any resemblence of a tacho, and you'll know what I mean.....with the 4K, just rev it till you hear the valves start to bounce, then shift lol

  2. Combined over 500,000km driving on our two Toyotas (1 AE102, 1 SXV10R), all serviced every 10,000km at Newcastle Toyota, and never ever had a problem with them. In several circumstances they've even fixed minor problems for us in the carpark, for free (such as when the alternator mounting bolts were loose and the belt was slipping) even when it wasn't a problem that they'd misdiagnosed or missed in the first place (alternator problem was 6000k after the previous service). On first name basis with service manager and most of the staff, purely from buying one car there and getting two serviced there, and we know that if ever there's a problem with any of the work that heads would roll.

    Would definitely recommend them, but on the flipside stay away from Charlestown and Cardiff Toyota, dodgy stuff goes on there (especially in the sales department, stories of people going for test drives and being refused their own keys back when they said they didn't want to buy the car)

  3. Thats why it's always a good idea to put the car in gear too (or park, if you're pansy enough to drive an auto). First or reverse should be enough to hold the car on even a decent slope. Hell, go to a cold country and putting the car in gear is the only way of keeping the car stationary when parked apart from wheel chocks, as handbrake cables have a tendency of freezing stuck if the temperature drops too far.

    I hate to break your bubble, but the HSV VX-R is NOT a Barina. It is a hotted-up Astra, and has been known about for ages (was confirmed for local sale way back in March), and IS for sale at the moment. It competes with the Focus XR5, Golf GTi, Clio Sport and others, a full size bigger than the supermini hot-hatches like the Polo GTi, Swift etc

    The Vauxhall Corsa VXR (aka Barina) isn't going on sale in Europe (where they MAKE them) until 2007, so I highly doubt you "saw" one in a dealership in Australia

    Doubt it, there's been a 4WD version of pretty much every Corolla since the E9x series, and none of them bar the AE95 4WD wagon have been sold in Australia. In addition, they tend to come out with crappy diesel or low-capacity petrol engines, another negative

  6. In the AE102, I can generally average 8L/100km around town, or 625km/tank (50L). However, I usually refill at around 45L, which is well after the red light has come on. There have been several circumstances where I have pushed it so far that the fuel pump actually starves for fuel going up a hill or around a sharp corner/roundabout, thats when I know I really have to fill up. On the freeway, I've actually managed to get BELOW the stated fuel consumption, at one stage touching 6L/100km (this included a 150km/h thrash between Lithgow and Bathurst trying to keep up to the guys on the cruise ahead of me) and several laps around Mt Panorama (some quite hard). Was quite surprised when I put only 37L in after doing close to 600km.....could have got 800km out of that tank

    The KE55 has the same size tank, but the fuel gauge is absolutely hopeless so I play it by ear....in this case, quite literally, as the fuel tank is located behind the backseat between the seat and the boot, so you can hear it sloshing around going over speed bumps and driveways. Despite only being 1.3L, it tends to get about the same city consumption as the 102, but doesn't change for highway driving (the fact you have to keep the foot almost flat to the floor to hold 90km/h is part of this, especially up hills).....damn carbie and pushrod/two-valve/non-crossflow engines.....

  7. The Aygo is a Toyota model unique to Europe, mainly because it is a joint venture between Toyota, Peugeot and Citroen. All models are essentially identical, with minor trim and spec differences, and are built in the same factory (in the Czech Republic). The respective models are the Toyota Aygo, Peugeot 107, and the Citroen C1. The style of car would be totally unsuitable for the American driving environment (and here too, anyone remember the Ka or the smart cars, and how popular they were?), and thus is extremely unlikely to ever be sold there.

    Billie is Australia Post Red (can't remember the code), and it'll be getting a respray in the same colour soon, once the rust is fixed up. However, down the track when she starts hillclimbing (and my g/f stops using it as a daily), it'll probably get a Heritage/British Racing Green respray.

    Well, the Chaser is based on the same chassis as the Cressida, and the Mark II, and the Cresta (over the years), they're essentially the same car with different badges.

    The Aristo on the other hand is the Toyota version of the Lexus GS, slight difference

    And the Celsior is a Toyota. The LS is the Lexus version

  10. Just wondering, did you source those lights from here or overseas, cause I'm lookin at the exact same set.

    Bought them from a guy on another forum, not sure where he got them from in the first place but they're a slightly different shape to local ones, thus a few issues arise when you install them

Not trying to rain on Brisbane's parade, or be a party-pooper (as I'm from Newy, I hate both teams although Brisbane more), but there were a couple of very dodgy ref/video ref calls in the last 20 minutes or so that turned the game for the Broncos. Firstly, the disallowed Storm try where the ball clearly bounced off Matt King's head without him playing at it, yet the video ref deemed it a knock on. Then there was the deflected pass by Justin Hodges (he clearly played at the ball) that went out and wasn't picked up by the ref, when Melbourne were hard on the attack. Both of these events would have swung control of the game back to Melbourne (or at least evened it up), and the finish would have been a lot different.
