  1. Filtration will be the benefit of the K&N one. In general, a lot of pods don't filter as well as the oem filters, thus allowing for more dirt and dust to enter into the engine. For example, the Blitz and HKS pods don't filter much at all.

K&N has one of the best filters out there, although you should try a dry based one, such as apexi, as they are a lot easier to clean, and no need to coat the filter wth some oil thing, in the case of the K&N.

cais and sris generally give more power due to them sucking in more air. With sri's, most of the time you will be sucking in hot air from the engine unless it is completely sealed and has a cold air feed to it. Cais get there power from sucking in colder air, thus allowing more air to reach the engine.

I hope I explained it right..... If I'm wrong someone please correct me on this.

On your note about the price, I guess your paying for a filter that not only filters better than the generic one, but also the warranty....

Wow...for a newbie you know quite alot about filters. I mean I do understand that CAIs and SRIs purpose is of course to suck more air than the stock and restrictive air box. The thing that I'm still trying to comprehend is the filter and pods. I know that they filter out dirt, water etc...from getting into the engine. But if that's their purpose then why K&N are stating that when you have a K&N filter (Panel or Pod) it will give you some gains??? Because their less restrictive???

So again going back to my original question, should I just stick to my generic pod then...if it's going to do the same job as K&N??? And save $70?!?

I'm after gains...not the warranty or million kms??? IF K&N is better than TFI in terms of power gains then...can somethere PLEASE STAND and explain???

  2. You no what peeps...here's a simple and probably a stupid question.

With CAIs, what is it about them that actually gives you more power???

Is it the pipping? or the Air Pod itself???

I've got a Custom SRI made for my 2003 corolla. But my pod is a TFI (Generic $30 brand from autobarn) now I would like to know if I should buy a K&N Extreme Top Filter for $70??? Now my cousin is saying that its a waste of money and that I should just stick with my TFI Pod, since it does the job anyway. Now his into the modifying cars too...so he knows alot about Mods.

So should I stick with my Pod or buy the K&N???

Bear in mind, that with K&N, when looking after them, they are guarenteed for a million km's....

Yeah I know about the Million K Gaurantee...but are you just paying for the name brand??? I'm just curious for a piece of cotton and wire mesh shaped into a cone, and it's got the brand K&N it justify the price tag of $70 - $100???

Or the cheaper generic brand??? I mean if they do the same job and same gains then whats the point??? TFI or K&N???

  3. i just wish DAMN trd would make a cai!!! they make 1 for corollas why not a celica...mmm i wonder if the trd corolla cai fits a celica? same engine but i just dont know about where the corolla piping goes

  4. it's not hard to relocate the battery to the boot, you can buy a nice ceramic battery post for the bay to bolt the old positive battery lead to, then get a positive lead made to run to the rear of the car (there's a few ways of doing this, just ensure if it passes through the body it has a suitable grommet so it wont get cut through, ever!

Also make sure you have a good slow-blow fuse on the line at the battery to ensure in the event of a short on the main feed, you dont burn your car to the ground.

You can purchase battery boxes from autoparts stores, some are better than others.  Make sure the box is bolted securely to the chassis, and if you're putting the battery in the cabin you will need to use a dry cell battery unless you seal the box and vent it to the outside of the car.

I ran mine through the firewall on the main grommet on the passenger footwell area where the body loom runs through, then along the loom area down the passenger sill to the boot.  The earth strap was bolted to a ground down area of the chassis rail.

In this pic you can see the ceramic post I purchased from an autoelec supplies store along with the custom positive cable

Rollamods...thanks for the info and pic. But my car is a 2003 Corolla.

So need help in that car model.

  5. I have been contemplating with the idea and will attemp to relocate it soon, you just need to bolt down a bottom plate or something similar to keep the battery tied down.

If you do relocate the battery, would there be problems with the wiring???

Relocating to the boot??? Man...how is that possible???

Thanks for the feed back though

  6. Having a cannon doesnt mean a loss in power...

I have the Injen CAI and X-force cannon...  and came 4th on the dyno day :)  110.6ATW

and it may drone a little... but barely noticeable with the silencer on..

    p.s. silencer in/out difference was .2 of a kw :P

p.p.s Dan... you really think the x-force twin loop is good? have you seen or heard one in action?

    i agree with motoman

if your seriously telling me you lose power with a cannon id LOVE to take my cannon off and get a muffler

even though xoom kicks my ***** haha but ask him he will tell you my stivo with zorst and CAI ISNT slow

so if by me getting a muffler will give me a noticable gain ill g change it right now

i just dont know how poeple say you lose power

was it by feel or did you test it or ?????

hell if anyone wants to help with the funds ill dyno it twice on the same day once with cannon and once with a good graded muffler

if somone provides a muffler to use and pays for atleast 1 run and ill pay for the other then its all good to go

    anyone interested or

if heaps of people are we can all chip in a few bucks so that way we can all find out sooner

    cheers

If you remember back in June we had a Dyno Day here in QLD.....

    Qld Dyno Day

    SPORTIVO'S

    Lance - 103.5kw atw(stock 05)

    Mtbrider - 108kw atw(stock 04)

    Wei Wei - 111kw atw(CAI & Rear cannon)

    Shaohaok - 111.75kw atw(CAI,flywheel,headers & no rear muffler)

    Azza - 112.5kw atw(Stock 04)

    Silvabullit - 114.75kw atw(CAI & CES cat back)

    Danthuyer - 115.5kw atw(Unichip,CAI, CES cat back,headers)

    Sportiv - 117kw atw(CAI & muff back!)

    Sportivo Rice - 118.5kw atw(CAI & CES cat back)

Focus on the difference between my car at 112.5kw (stock) and Wei Wei's with a CAI which would increase power output and a Cannon which has decreased his output...

    Also check this out...

    Qld Dyno Day #1

I can't find the thread that contained the photos and results but Sportiv_Rice had a cannon and did pretty poorly (I can't remember the result) and the difference between this dyno result and the second on was that he lost the cannon...

But, at the end of the day, it's personal preference..... :)

    Azza,

This list doesn't make sense to me?!? From your list, are you telling me that 2 sportivos are not making the same power when stock?!?

I mean your car makes 112.5 KW ATW

    While:

    Lance - 103.5kw atw(stock 05)

    Mtbrider - 108kw atw(stock 04)

    Huh?!?!? *Confused*

And Danthuyer - 115.5kw atw(Unichip,CAI, CES cat back, headers) makes less power than Sportivo Rice - 118.5kw atw(CAI & CES cat back)???

So Unichip and Headers doesn't give you any gains??? Compare to a CAI $ CES Cat Back???

    Hmmmmm...Interesting!!!

  7. Look like Carbon Fibre? 350 to 400 bucks for Look like?

$350 - $400 just for coloring your engine cover is CRAZY!!!

    Man...$5 - $10 Spray Can. And DIY...PRICELESS.

For $350 - $400 I'd rather buy a TRD or AEM CAI with that.

  8. cool..nicely done bro..oh..one more thing..so there won't be any oil seeping arnd..cams,pistons popping out from anywhere?its just the cover that will come off by itself?

Nah dude...when you take the engine cover off that's it! It's just the cover that comes off. You don't have to worry about any leaking or any exposed pistons etc!

The engine cover is plastic so just wash, clean, dry and spray paint it.

I used a masking tape to cover the Toyota sign and the VVT-i logos. Then just use a stanley knife to go around the egdes. Then spray paint it.

    Cheers

  9. hi guys..

was just wondering if we could just remove the engine cover to respray(DIY) it?can we like use plastic sheets or cling wrap even to cover the expose area while respraying the coveR?

    cheers

It can be done...I've done mine and it was easy!!!

Just take the engine cover off, clean it, dry it and spray paint it with matching color! And let it dry overnight and put it back on the next day.

    Here's one done earlier :P :P :P

  10. Leave it white man!

then go get a white grille, and white side skirts and a white spoiler!

Hey Kcorro, I think we may have the beginnings of another "Pink Bits" here...

Those in VIC who've seen it will know what I mean.

Those who haven't, imagine a black Ascent with Pink Wheels, Bodykit, Wiper arms, mirrors and interior bits and pieces

It's worse in real life than reading about it!

Man...that car is "FUGLY"!!! I've seen it more than 5 times already! Somewhere in Doncaster area. It's a sight for sore eyes!!! And I think it's a chick driver too...I guess it makes sense with all that pink bits :lol::lol:

  11. I'm just wondering if any Corolla auto owners have yet had to replace their brake pads, and if so, what sort of distance did you get from them?

I know I won't get the sort of mileage from them that I got out of my Starlet's front pads ... I made my dealer replace them at the 100,000km service, because I'm mechanically brainless, suspicious and possibly just a little bit silly ... they were lucky to be half-worn at worst!

On the other hand, the front pads on an auto Festiva I once owned (please don't hurt me, it was an honest mistake!  :P ) were gone by 30,000km.

Autos obviously wear their brakes sooner than (standard) manuals, hence why I want to hear from other auto owners.

Dude...had my Corolla 2003 (Brand New) and I haven't touched the brake pads since then! I'm not hearing any noise when I brake. Though I've topped up the brake fluids twice and that's about it.

    Cheers

  12. N/A cars need back pressure, and a canon wont give it. Catback system with a propper muffler is the way to go. also i would have a look around for some pipe to replace the peice of stock intake pipe that goes into the intake manifold fromt he short ram intake, try to remove those sharp bends that will also help quite a bit

Thanks for that Northy...I'll get a Catback Exhaust with a good muffler.

As for the Ram Pod, I've listen to your advice and I replace the stock rubber intake pipe that goes into the manifold and I got a straight 3'' pipe.

    Here's a Pic

Notice the hose on the top of the pod! That hose goes all the way through the front vent of the car. To give it fresh cold air. I'm still going to build a box/heatshield for it too.

    Cheers

  13. full exhaust (eg. headers/extractors) will give more torque than a CAI

if your going just cat back go for a CAI in my opinion

    stock exhaust is good already

but be careful and dont get any canon muffler

    proven to lose power

Thanks for that spec_black...though I'm curious why do you lose power with a Cannon Exhaust??? Care to elaborate on that one??? Also if I go the cat back, on a 1ZZFE would I get any gains at all??? I've got a Cannon exhaust, I took it out coz, I got caught by the EPA saying that it was too loud. I'm thinking of getting a cat back with the Cannon??? I've already done a custom Air Intake (check out my garage) so maybe a cat back with Cannon would give me some gains. I'm more into Torque than high end power!!!

    Cheers

  14. Hey...peeps...just wondering which mod will give you Torque???

A CAI or Exhaust (Full System or Cat back)???

I've read the other topic forums, but I'm getting mixed feedback.

Some are saying that a CAI gives you top end, but a Cat back gives you low/mid range??? And Vice-versa...soo

Can someone please clarify this for me...for the record???

    Cheers

    Fellas

  15. Damn i have a post facelift. Thanks Big Bum. If anyone is interested this front spoiler is being sold on ebay and its going for cheap!

HIROLA...where about's in E-bay us this front spoiler???

Had a look through Exterior accessories and couldn't find it???

    Any direct links???

    Thanks

  16. My car has never gone to a mechanic to get "serviced"

i do the oil every 5000km, and with every "major" service required.... an upgrade has happened...

e.g. Brakes, Thermostat (coolant, radiator cap), clutch/flywheel.

as far as the "inspection" of things that they do... mmm... i don't trust any of them... coz i believe i can see just a good as them...

pffft... "inspect" the last time my sisters car got the "inspection" done they even failed put the wheel lugs back on properly....

    Cost of self service:

    Labour: $0

    Oil: $45

    Oil filter: $3

    Carwash and wax: $0

    Visually Inspect:

    All rubber mounts/seals

    Wheels

    Engine (mounts, belt, alternator)

    Battery

    Brake (pad&fluid)

    power steering fluid

    Coolant

    Wiper Fluid

    Headunit/Sound system

mmm... gee i loose track of what i look at... :D

car is smooth as and have not given me any problems ANYWHERE!! :D

I agree with Pippy...DIY is the best way...saves you heaps of money.

I do my service every 10K with my cousin (His got all the tools) and it just cost me

the Oil ($50) Oil Filter ($5) and sometimes shout my cousin with Maccas ($6)!!!

    That's it!!!

And we do a through check around, underneath the car too. So bottom line is DIY is the best to go.

Servicing it through a mechanic is a waste of time and money!!! For a simple service...

    PEACE

  17. What do u mean u cant see a picture u cant see the pics that SyXxpak put on???  ;)

Yeah I don't see no Pix either??? :(

I would like to see what you have done, coz I've put in a Pod filter on my Car...looks like a rampod!

I'll take pixs and post it soon!!!

  18. is this the shop in box hill? if they are i think these are good looking bars and worth having a closer look.

are they the ones with the orange brackets one each side?

Yeah the shop is in Box Hill (it's called': 'On the Run') they especialize mainly with Subaru WRX STis.

BigBum yeah the Summit Strut Bars are with the orange brakets on each side!

  19. there is no camber adjustment on the rears :(, to combat the tyre wear i rotate my from tyres from side to side every 10,000k's

Damn!!! Oh well it's the price we pay for the little bit of fun I guess. Thank dude.

By the way...you from Brissy??? Where abouts??? I use to live there for 8 years man...Now I'm here in Melbourne! I miss Brissy...weather is good! :D

So how's Cootha like nowadays??? Have you ever taken the route heading towards the Gap (near the TV stations???) at night!?!? Man I would love to drive my corolla there now!!! :D :D :D

    PEACE B)
