Engine dead

Can someone help 

I have a Hilux 2006 auto 4lt v6 The problem is I went to start the car but nothing happened dead as a doornail I have a new battery and all electricals are working fine .

I have tried moving the gear-stick up and down out of park but still nothing ,the cable to the gearbox is fine . It did start once which enabled me to drive it home but since then nothing 

Im hopping someone can help .

Is the starter motor spinning/engaging at all?

Is there a loud click/clack sound when turning the key?

No there is only a humming noise when I turn the key all the way but nothing else The starter moter does not make a sound except that hum which is electric

I didnt think it could be the starter motor but then again

If automatic MUST be in Park to start--check switch on gear lever.  susspect worn/broken wire.....  there aere wires for revese lights too, don;t mix them up

I had the RACQ come around the mechanic checked everything then said it was the starter motor .so all is well
