Gearbox trouble

Hi all,

My corolla, a 89 wagon (4WD), has been running fine since purchase, but yesterday I noticed gearbox trouble after driving over some rough terrain. This morning when the car is idling, I cannot select any of the gears, no matter how hard I try and force it! Reverse doesn't go, but just grinds and grinds.

When the engine is off however, the gears can be selected as normal. I'm guessing something was knocked whilst over the rough terrain yesterday, but have little mechanical knowledge to back up my theory!

Any advice on what the problem could be?

Many thanks for any help

I am no expert, but i'd be looking at clutch

Thanks - someone else has also suggest the clutch.

I put the car in gear and with the clutch down I started the car, the car didn't lurch forward. I have been told I may have an internal leak in the master or slave cylinder, or an external leak in the line..Does anyone know where are these located?

Thanks for any advice.

The clutch master cylinder is mounted to the firewall directly opposite the clutch pedal. the slave is mounted to your transmission. you can peel back the boot to see if there is clutch fluid inside. if there is, then there's a leak. You can also inspect the line by following it from ther cylinder all the way to the slave. hope this helps.

P.S. Just type "clutch slave cylinder" in google images and you'll see what it should look like
