Rising cost of petrol.....?

Sure it's an issue,so first thing without even needing to discuss the physics of turning cars off whilst going down hills, carby Vs EFI etc.

Plan ahead what trips you are making and make the most of ANY drive you do by doing as much as possible (within reason) and thus not have to drivethe car as often.

This helps a lot with local,small-range trips.

If you can walk, yes W A L K it's a long known and proven way of transporting yourself at short-ish distances and of course is not as good for trips more than a few Km's in our very "have it ALL done NOW" lifestyle however it does not cause pain and makes for better health within yourself.

Dependence on cars is very overrated, sure it's cool to cruise and enjoy your pride and joy but I wonder if we are just plain getting soft with this whole approach of seeing cars as our ONLY source of transport option? ;)

Oh and bicycles still hold the record for being the most efficient means of transport.

I walk to train and take it all the way across the city to work. I do a lot of walking when I can.

I only drive when I go shops or when going out.
