Hi, new guy to the forum here at knows jack ******* mechanically.

Love my camry but have had major problems with the auto gear box lately. Problem started out intermittently with the gear slipping occasionally. changed the fluid which fixed it for a while, also found evidence of heaps of wear when changed the transmission fluid.

problems got worse and seem to be able to drive it only in 2nd gear but reverse still works. meaning i put it in drive but it won't get above 5krpm before changing gears. so its ok for short drives (prob not for the engine tho!) but useless on the freeway. its old, bout 250,000k's, so does this mean the deaf of it? got a quote for 2.5k AUD to fix, which is more than its worth tbh so considering scrapping the dear old thing.

any advice is greatly appreciated and really just seeing if the quote is a rip off aswell.

thanks for your help

Go to your local wrecker and find an auto box. Be prepared to pay around the 1k mark because the automatic gearbox's are pretty dear. If you dont want that option, then scrap the car.

Auto transmissions are complex things. If they are proposing to rebuild it, your quote does not sound unreasonable.

As tripper said, your best bet is probably to find one at a wreckers.

Agree with the other guys but have a look on Ebay a mate of mine picked up a Auto for V6 camry there for $500 from a wreckers also if your good mates with a motor mech ask him to buy it because trade for a Auto at a wreckers is about $400

cheers
