Gearbox just crapped itself?

Hi Guys.

I have a Gen 6 celica with about 218k on the odo. Just today, i was leaving the driveway and the road was a bit up hill. My steering was locked right to its max (narrow street), and i was giving it some power to move forward and narrowly miss the kerb. I suddenly heard a huge bang from my engine bay and my car was just rolling backwards. I initially thought i had hit something, but it turns out that it was something mechanical inside my car.

The car doesn't move in any gear...all you hear is some weird gear grinding noise which gets a higher pitch at higher gears or rpm. The car never stalls...when in gear, if i completely let go of the clutch, the gear grinding sound is only heard while motionless.

Prior to this, i've had a few problems which I think may have led up to this. Just in the last 6 months, the car will ***** like crazy if cold and when the clutch is in contact. This would go away after 2 mins (when car's warmed up). Also, while driving, I remember hearing weird clattering sounds coming from the engine bay while accelerating after changing gears.

The car is now sitting in a depot, waiting for transfer to a mechanic. Does anybody know what the problem is? Clutch, gearbox, drivetrain? Also, how much will I be looking at for repair?

Thanks guys

That has happened with my Camry before. You could usually isolate it to a certain gear, as in mine would start making noises going from 1st to 2nd. It was definitely the clutch though. Ended up getting a refurb gearbox, it cost me $2000 for that which is only expected to last another couple of years, so that's no good.

It sounds similar to your problem, because after a while my car could not even accelerate so I'm assuming you will be needing a new gearbox.

Out of curiosity, did you have any aftermarket transmission parts, like a lightweight flywheel or heavy duty clutch?

Nop, all stock.

It turns out that the internal diff broke and the cheapest option was a swap with another 2nd hand gearbox.
