Hi guys, just noticed the other day, mums zze 122 auto has an overdrive button undernear the main trigger for the gear stick yet my gfs 2008 zre auto doesnt?

Did they change this for a specific reason or im just blind and cant seem to find one? Its to stretch out the gears right? to maintain econonmy and stop constant gear changes in city driving? so why would they have gotten rid of it?

Thanks guys

They mainly would have gotten rid of it for simplicity. Try asking a few people out there what overdrive is and does... and when they should use it. Not too many people are aware of it's function, so they just don't bother putting it in for most automatics these days.

If you can put your transmission down a gear (ie. you can select 3rd gear on a 4 speed gearbox), then you have essentially 'turned off' overdrive.

dont know if this helps but on corolla specs it says

6 speed manual transmission or 4 speed auto with sporty gated shift

So then when you are all 'sporty' and put it into 3rd gear, you are actually just turning over-drive off in the old sense.

In most conditions you should leave overdrive on. It's only usually used when you are towing something or carrying a heavy load. By turning overdrive off, you prevent the gearbox from selecting an overdrive gear ratio (output speed faster than input speed) which in turn will put less stress on the gearbox when it is heavily loaded. It is also handy as well when you are going a bit of hill climbing so that it doesn't shift to the highest gear and as a result, won't keep upshifting/downshifting all the time.
