Cold Start leads to Engine Light.

Recommended Posts

I have a stock 2003 zze123, sometimes, the check engine light will come on after a very subdued startup.

Start the car and it will only rev to 1800 the drop to HOT idle, then wait 10 seconds and the check engine light will come on.

It feels like a slug, and need to be cautious it doesn't stall from take off.

When HOT, all is good.

Any help will be appreciated.

Will probably need an OBD2 scanner to get fault code.

But I will try anything once.

I have the fault code.......

P0505......

The Idle control valve system.

Apparently this is a common code or "INFAMOUS" as a Google search would have you believe.

Does anyone have any clues to further my journey?

Thanks

Thank you. The problem is fixed, Thank you,

Super Dave your name is not super enough.

Thank you BKS, I did take it to Sunshine Toyota for a free plug and see what is wrong(p0505).

Going by the advice of Super Dave and following his instructions from the excellent thread, this job was very easy.

This cost all of $14.00; which included the ICV gasket and a can of throttle body and carburettor cleaner and 15 cotton buds. The throttle body gasket is not sold very much in oz, as there was only one in the country when I inquired about it.

My advice for this is clean and clean and if you think it is clean, then clean it again. Change the 5 pronged screw thingos to normal phillips head screws.

To remove the ICV from the throttle body, mount the throttle body in a vise with soft jaws and a block of wood underneath, and pretend to have an impact screwdriver, by this I mean, a sturdy phillips head screwdriver and an engineers hammer. While pressing down firmly on the screwdriver and turning (lefty loosy, righty tighty), tap progressively (might need one good whack) with the hammer on the end of the screwdriver until the screw breaks free. (I want to break free, yeah).

Once again thank you for everyone's input and advice this has been an experience.

Luke.

ps has anyone done valve adjustment on these engines yet? Might be the next thing....................
