Tax advice

Recommended Posts

so here's the story

I got a letter from ATO saying I didn't lodge tax in 2007. <_<

I have till 12th Dec to do so/.

I called the tax office and the lady wont gimme an extension [my account overseas now]

This is what she said quote: "You had 3 years.. We can't give you anymore time!"

Now, The problem is, Do i HAVE to provide group certificates for all the jobs I did? or can I just provide payslips and bank statements?

It's going to be real hard to get all group cert's and i doubt some of my old employers exist anymore. :(

How should i go about this? Just rock up to an agent without group cert's ?

sigh_

anyone got any advice????

im not a tax expert, but im pretty sure you need a group cert if substantiate your income for that financial year to the ato. otherwise, the income is considered tax-free and you may be taxed even more as a penalty.

Definately need a group certificate.

Why dont you have records? Both you and your employer are required by law to keep your employment records for 7 years, so even if you old jobs dont exist anymore, the records should still be around.

Thanks guys/

That form is gonna save my life..

and I've started calling up all the workplaces and emailing them...

should be good..

Thanks again

UPDATE: just in case someone else faces the same problem

1. if you work and paid no tax on a job.. it's compulsory to provide a group certificate, if at the time you are not in possession you can use a copy of the final payslip concerning the period.

2. The employer is required to give you a group cert if asked... although the tax office wont force them or anything if you can't get in contact with them

3. If you cant reach em.. fill out statutory form similar to the above post.

luckily in my case they've all got back to me except one!

Good information.

but......no offence, couldn't you have asked the ATO for the advice?

i called them.

the lady wouldn't listen to me cos i needed an extension on the due date...

something abt "you had 3 years already we cant help you... just lodge a return by the due date!"

maybe i cud have tried other departments.. but never got around to it coz of exams.... maybe next time...

I have my own accountant.. its just he's overseas now... bad timing i guess thats all...

alls solved now. so =]
