Transmission or Oil Cooler

Hi All,

I have now started to ask questions...

I did a search but nothing specific was found.

At the front of the Kluger looking at the passenger side fog light, to the left of it and underneath is a duct leading to a radiator of sorts...

Is this a transmission cooler or oil cooler?

Does any one know...

From what Toyota Service say, it's an oil cooler...

I think I had one of these fitted to my old Commodore.

It's main function was to add extra oil cooling for the engine when it was under towing stress.

The Commodore had a few options, one the size of a large piece of toast and another even bigger, both look like mini radiators.

I looked a little closer and can confirm that it is a Transmission Cooler.

It is a 7 Row Cooler.

The lines that go in and out lead to the radiator / transmission case.

These lines are printed / stamped A/T Oil.

Can anyone else confirm this on their Kluger?

Sounds like you have solved the mystery!

Why are you concerned about it?

As this is my 18th car, but first SUV, I am not a novice in relation to motor vehicles.

Before my purchase, I read some issues about the transmission in the Klugers.

Basically a Kluger is running Aurion running gear; Engine / Transmission.

However, instead of being 1500kg, a Kluger is around 2000kg.

Add to that towing etc. More heat, more strain and load on the transmission.

But maybe this concern was on early model Klugers and maybe Toyota rose to the challenge and added a Transmission Cooler.

Mine has it, but do others?

Or was this a dealer fitted option?

I feel better now knowing that mine has a Transmission Cooler.

Open to thoughts / experiences...

You're 18th car? How old are you? 114? biggrin.gif

I'm jealous and also shaking my head....again, sign of jealously...

Can you really fit options to a Kluger outisde the list of official options?

Checked the Kluger tonight and I can confirm that there is a transmission oil cooler behind the front bar at the bottom on the passenger side, with a vent in front designed to direct air into it.

Not sure if it was added in later builds (mine in June 2009) but I believe it is common for cars to have them. My GT4 had similar coolers for Power Steering, Gearbox Oil and Water to Air Intercooler. It was quite crowded in the front!

I would also be on about my 18th car. More a function of different vehicles I'v been allocated at work rather than owning 18 seperate cars.

This is the part number of the Transmission Cooler; TO-920-48060 or TO-920-48061. (Radiator)

And yes it confirmed as an ATM Oil Cooler.

Standard on our Klugers, however this forms part of the 5000LBS Towing Pack as an option in the US Market.

Here is some additional info I have found regarding the US Spec Highlanders;

- V6 Towing Prep Package [3] - includes 5000-lb. towing capacity, heavy-duty radiator with engine oil cooler, 240-watt fan coupling, transmission oil cooler

with water cooler, 150-amp alternator and prewired harness.

I wonder, do we have all that in our Klugers?
