i know this sounds ridiculous but...............

i've just bought a new air filter for my '89 corolla hatch, however i can't get the old one out!

i've unclipped the top of the thing it sits in, but the filter won't lift out. it is seriously stuck in place and i have no clue why. i've tried with all my strength and it won't budge.
