hi guys

This has been annoying me for a while. when i step on the brake pedal it wont start to slow down until i push it in deep it sorta feels a bit spongy and soft. My friends have noticed this when driving my car as well so i was wondering how i could adjust my brakes to be stiffer and start to brake as soon as i step on them instead of slightly after?

Harder pad material. Different pads have different feel to them, whether this fixes your problem I don't know. Might be worthwhile doing a full brake fluid replacement. I'm going to assume it's the original fluid and at 2 years old is ready to be replaced (not bled).

Have the following inspected before a mechanic starts quoting you prices on master cylinder:

1. Brake pad - how much meat is left?

2. Have the brake fluid tested with a digital moisture detecting device. Literally takes several seconds. If the moisture content is below 2%, it's considered normal. If it's nearing 3%, then this will explain the spongy brake pedal feel. It's time to replace the brake fluid oil.

3. Have the brake lines inspected for any abnormal wear and tear. If it needs to be replaced, you can go OEM or upgrade to braided brake lines which are ADR approved.

4. Have a brake specialist to bleed the brakes to release trapped air pockets from inner walls of calipers and wheel cylinders.

5. Adjustment of the rear drum/shoe or disc brake assembly may be required.

In addition, if you want a sensitive brake pedal, then you have the option of adjusting the brake pedal push rod.
