hi guys, i'm new to here, but old to the rolla.

my car is a 2001 accent zze-122r jap built hatch with 160,000km+ ,live in sydney, got two very bad problems with it, got heaps of questions, any inputs for rescuing my poor rolla would be much appreciated

Any CHEAP fixes??

"Front Brakes": First do i need db1431-Aisin or db1422-Sumitomo???

-developed shuddering braking many months ago, told "discs warped", mechanic machined and fixed

-very soon later "warped discs" redeveloped, and i've been putting up with it for like half a year (....... annoying)

-Front discs are as shiny as a MIRROR!!

-i think the pads are the problem, non-heat stable?

*NOW- whats the best i can do to fix & avoid redevelop of problem again??

-as i dont like the pads, definitely will be changing them, any brand do u recommend? (bendix? they say no break-in required)

-do i need change discs too?? machining by mechanic cost less??

- is it DIY possible for a novice to save $$?? and change/bleeding brake fluid necessary?

"Oil Burning":

-been burning oil for quite a long time, mechanic couldnt find much, told could be a very worn engine

-as evident by thick black soot around inside of exhaust pipe tip, and very dark engine internal seen thru oil cap opening

-the rolla takes about 3weeks emptying oil from full to Min.

-constant topping up, using 20w50 recommended by mechanic to slow down rate by thick oil, i also tried 5w40 full syn, 10w40, 15w40- but no better result

*is there a fix/remedy for this??

all inputs are much appreciated

i would replace the discs with a set of RDA items , as i have done.

If the oil is being used that much thats really not good , does it leak at all? how is the car driven etc?

if the brake are warped in a short period of time u have a few possibilities:

1) rotors are undersized and for a 160,000 km car, if you haven't changed the rotors at all since the car came from factory, most likely rotors are worn down. get them checked by a local mechanic. if they other mechanic fixed them. he would have machined the rotors. if he has done this, then u would be loosing more meat on your rotors result them warping quicker from the heat generated under braking

2) pads are worn, do u hear a scraping noise when driving (not necessarily under braking)? these would be the squeal shims saying that u need to replace them.

check the rears as well. one way to check if they rears are undersized/warped is to pull the handbrake up slowly at 60 to 100km/h speed and see if your car/seat vibrates. if they do, get them checked by the mechanic too

NO SHORT CUTS OR CHEAP FIXES, bite the bullet and get them fixed once and properly! u don't want problems occurring again soon after they are fixed

also try to change braking habits too and if u braked hard, just get off the brake as soon as the cars standing still and pull up that hand brake. if you got an auto chuck it on "P"

As for your oil problem. 3 weeks is definitely too short of a time for the oil to be burning that quickly. its ok to have a bit of soot on the exhaust, that's engine oil + crude oil from fuel burning. I have soot on my exhaust tip as well. engine does consume a bit over time to lubricate the engine. how does the car run? fuel economy? rough, smooth? any tapping noise? black/blue/white smoke coming out of the exhaust. ask eviltwin asked "any oil leaks?"

etc.

eviltwin + kenshin-x, Thanks for the inputs,

definitely will fix brakes, and burning oil issue(if there is any fix).

but i will go buy some good pads from the auto shops, rather than getting the mechanic to supply dodgy pads, warping the discs soon again.

so looking at the bendix site, ""IS my car Aisin db1431 / Sumitomo db1422 ?????""

WHERE can i get some cheap new discs in sydney?? are the discs also very specific as well like the pads???

can somebody give me a good price range for the labour by a mechanic and price of parts (fronts only)??

there is no braking noise anyhow, but massive(really Massive) shudder of steering wheel and brake pedal when applied,

the car gets driven very normally, no racing harsh braking, confirmed by mechanic there is no leak of oil.

lots of White Smoke on first few start ups (winter), when first i introduced 20w50 top up with 15w40 base.

black soot is Thick, like a chimney, dont know fuel econ., never calculated.

car is 2nd hand i got few yrs ago, brakes worked quite normal until like 9months ago.

thanks guys
