1978 Supra Mk 1 - "now with a picture!"

G'Day

I would like to share my 1978 Toyota Supra Mk 1.

The car is an MA46, Celica Supra XX. According to the last owner, this vehicle was imported into Australia for the 1978 Melbourne Motor Show. The car was then registered by York Motors, and driven by the company director's wife.

The original engine was a 2.6 litre single over cam six, producing 110 hp (82kw) driven through a 5 speed manual gearbox. Today the Supra runs a 2.8 litre fuel injected twin cam six, coupled to a four speed automatic.

Inside the car is pure luxury, albeit in the style of 1978. Factory sunroof. Beige velour bucket seats and door trims, factory sport pack gauges - tach, volts, oil temp and pressure. Electic windows, height adjustable steering column, and climate control air conditioning.

The exterior is similiar to a late 1970's Celica Liftback, however the fronts are longer to accomodate the inline six. The car is maroon red with "blacked out body" under the side trim. The wheels are are Toyota "alloys", measuring 14x6, and shod in 205 70 series tyres.

The car has plenty of power, and a highway passing is a breeze. A pity the car no longer has a 5 speed, well at least it removes the danger of catching one's flared jeans on the clutch pedal!

Yeah, this heap is a real timewarp - nothing but original late 70's style. I can see Peter Williamson cruising home from Mount Panarama, after a hard day's racing in the yellow and red Celica. And.... Peter can open the fuel flap with a lever rather than an axe as used by the Pit crew.
