Hey,

My name is Emily and I am new to the forum :)

I recently purchased a 1993 Toyota Celica 2.2L and have had a **** load of problems. Basically everything has been sorted now but the over-heating problem is continuing. The previous yard did a number on it, a lot of fuses were blown and thermo stat guts were ripped out etc etc.

The problem I am having is that the car will drive fine with no heating issues for say a week or two then all of a sudden it re occurs. The gauge will move up to about 1/4 past half and then almost max which is when I pull over immediately usually before. This was happening only a few days ago after driving perfectly for 2 weeks. Then just a few days ago after topping up fluids it drove fine for another week or so and it has just started again! I was putting water/coolant into the overflow after each drive (not too long) each time I would need to fill it up the same amount say half a litre. Today I went for a longer drive and after an hour it got hot. I had only put the water in once today though. When idle at the lights the temp goes up and then as it gets some air through it it will cool a bit and move around from half then back to a quarter over half and so forth. When I pull up at home the engine is very hot with steam and spitting etc. Radiator has been filled etc. Anywayyy here is what I have done which hasn't fixed the problem:

Replaced temp sensor fan relay
Installed a new top radiator hose
Replaced radiator cap
Replaced thermostat

Ran alright after these fixes but then always goes back to being hot. My grandad is going to do a pressure test to see if the cylinder pressure is ok to check for blown head gasket. I don't think it is that for some reason as I am not blowing smoke from the exhaust, no water/sludge in oil etc. Apparently it is also missing a fan haha but don't quote me on that. SO! What do you think could be the more likely cause of INTERMITTENT Over-heating?
I am thinking it could be either:

Radiator clogged (although looks pretty new)?
Water pump?
A leak into the engine as there is no water coming out onto the carport etc?
The possibly missing fan! haha
May need a reset with battery removed after having replace the temp sensor?
Any chance of it being brake calliper? Does shudder on breaking from a high speed
Too much oil or of the wrong oil?
Head Gasket

Ugh so many just want to know what to replace next! Also thinking could be air in the system and should bleed out? When I was squeezing the top radiator hose the coolant in the overflow was rising up and bubbling. Not so much anymore if at all.

I will leave it at that anyway! Any advice would be appreciated smile.gif

Thanks!

Um i would say get the fan fixed as they do help to control the heat when it does go above a certain temp. Water pump maybe but if that was gone you would know about it and the car would be gone. I would start with the fan and make sure it does turn on when the temp gets high.

As for the coolant going down, my celica's coolent would go up and down depending on the temp outside. It was not leaking just would go up and down in the bottle for some reason. If you are loosing a lot then i would say it is leaking somewhere and drying up so it will not hit the ground. Say on any hot engine bit. Ohter than that you will have to start with engine problems i think. Good luck
