Hi all,

Recently I purchased a Toyota Corolla Station Wagon (see member intro here).

Occasionally there is smell of fuel vapours coming into the cab. I can't smell anything come from the engine bay and I'm positive the exhaust system has no leaks.

All the workshop manuals I've looked in suggest that the charcoal canister is blocked. The thing is...this car has no emission control setup or EGR valve (possibly as its a jap import).

I've looked high and low (above rear subframe, all around the engine and fuel tank) for a charcoal cannister but I can't find anything and as there is no EGR valve I don't think there is a cannister.

It is really doing my head in trying to find a vapour leak!!

Any suggestions please!?

Here is a pic of the engine bay incase it helps anyone.

Looks like it is an aftermarket filter. It looks to be positioned where the charcoal cannister normally sits. The cannister may have been deleted already.

Both the charcoal canister and the fuel filter normally live in that cavity, looks like both have been removed and replaced with a single aftermarket inline filter (which are normally designed for low-pressure carby fuel setups and not high-pressure EFI ones), wouldn't be surprised if that fuel filter is leaking due to the pressure.

FYI the charcoal canister and EGR aren't necessarily mutually inclusive - Australian-made models had the canister but no EGR
