Starlet blows AM2 fuse - distributor problem

NigelW

Recommended Posts

I have a 1997 Starlet Life that keeps blowing the 15Amp AM2 fuse as soon as the ignition is switched on.

I've discovered that if I disconnect the 2 wire plug leading into the distributor the fuse won't blow.

As I haven't been able to source a manual / wiring diagram I'd appreciate advice as to what this is. I'd just like a bit of a hint before diving into pulling the distributor off and trying to figure it out cold.

Extra points if you can tell me what the actual problem is and how to fix it!

Hey Nigel. Sounds like you have a dead short somewhere. I doubt it's the distributor. You have a positive wire somewhere making contact with ground. It's hard to say which or where though. You'll have to inspect your wiring loom from where you disconnected that plug and see what you can find. Have you had any work done to it lately ?

You don't need to upload URLs for pics. If you're on a PC, Simply drag and drop to the bottom of your thread and it uploads automatically. If you're using the mobile app, you just tap "add files" and it will prompt you to select from a source within your phone.

For your car issue though, these videos could help

Thanks Tony but I still suspect the short lies within the distributor. The 2-wire plug I disconnected is only about 200mm long and goes directly into the distributor. Very little scope for a short I suspect. The only way to be sure of course is to pull off the distributor and test the wires back to the plug. I'll also be able to see what the wires go to. I'll just have to do it I suppose.
