hi everyone we have toyota tarago 1986 gli 2.2 litre efi maunual .

iam having a problem with changing into third gear, when shifting from 2nd to 3rd the gear's crunch sometimes i have to miss 3rd and go straight to 4th gear.

when driving in 3rd it slips out of gear ,i have broken 2 kickdown cables(gear cables) and dont know what it is causing the problem??? the previous owner did convert the van from auto to manual and he told us the cable's break quiet often is this right? hope someone can help me? would it be wise to recon the gearbox?

thanks again

Although this is an old thread, there seems to be two problems. First is the synchro ring for third gear is worn out or the oil in the box is low. It would probably be easier to change from fourth to third as the engine speed slows down but going up the gears into third it's likely to cause damage. The brass that is worn from the synchro ring will exacerbate the wear in other gearbox components. Although some gearboxes have a magnet in them to attract the metal fibers they don't attract brass.

Second is that the detent lock (detention locking pins and springs that reduce the tension so it doesn’t jump out of gear) inside the gearbox. They maybe incorrectly assembled, damaged or considering the brass from the third gear synchro ring brass fibers, the detent maybe jammed which is why the former owner sold the bus.

As the van was converted from auto to manual then you also need to consider if the gear and clutch cables are installed correctly. Considering that it's going into other gears means that it's less likely to be a problem. If one or both were incorrectly installed with sharp bends or kinks then this would cause them to wear excessively and break if they are not routed according to how they were supposed to be assembled. A reasonable indicator is to look at where and how the cables are broken. If it's a consistent location then check for bends. If the break between each cable is not consistent then the issue is more likely to be the gearbox which needs repairing or replacing anyhow.
