I have an 1989 Camry 2 litre sedan with carburretor

The car broke down. No fuel in Carby. Got car home. Ran engine OK by feeding fuel in carby.

Suspected a faulty fuel pump (in tank) Tested pump OK

Disconnected wires to pump.

Was getting a a 12 volt feed on pump connection under back seat.

Note. this was ONLY happening when ignition key was on starter (only while cranking) and NOT when I had engine running by feeding carby.

After spending heaps of time checking wiring connections, all relays & fuses I noted my alternator was not charging. To cut the story short I found a faulty voltage regulator on the alternator (Bosch). Fitted a new one. Tested alternator OK. Fitted Alternator and added petrol in carby. 12 volt feed on pump restored and pump working OK.

So I did learn that the pump in the tank only works while the engine is running AND while the alternator is charging.

I do know a fair bit about auto electric. By the way the Haynes Workshop Manual was hopeless. Shows no circuits for electric pump & alternator.

What I would like to know is HOW does the alternator while charging COMPLETES the circuit to feed the pump. Does the charging circuit through the voltage regulator completes a circuit to one of the relays ?

Which relay is it ?

Can some kind person explain the circuit to me.

Appreciates your reply

Thanks.
