Hello there hoping someone can help. I know very little about cars and mechanical things but trying to figure all this out and I have been told I may have a case to take on Toyota.

I have a RAV4 2017 front wheel drive and I've bought it second hand in Feb 2022. Recently it has developed a droning noise and I've had it inspected by a mechanic who has said the CVT is failing and needs replacement. It's only done 81000km which seems poor. It hasn't had all the services at a Toyota garage but has had regular services, but is no longer under warranty.

I am going to get my car inspected by a Toyota dealership and then if the same outcome I will be contacting Toyota Australia to see if they will assist with replacing this as it appears it is a problem with the cvt system and there is no fluid swap interval mentioned in the service manual. I've been quoted $7.5k to replace the cvt system with a second hand one from another model but obviously reluctant and too worried to do this.

Please can anyone help?

Thanks in advance

Hi Janine, I am sorry to hear of your dilemma..Yes I would suggest a second opinion either at Toyota or another reliable mechanic.

It is rare to have a CVT failure at such low mileage but it can happen.

As you said it had not had a good service history it could be that the transmission had a tough life either towing or driven hard.

Please update us on what the outcome of the second opinion turns out too be, if it requires a replacement transmission someone may have a source or advise where to locate one for a good quality replacement unit.
