  1. the recovery points at the rear seems strong enough. None on the front though if you have a nidge bar.

The nudge bar has removable plastic covers in the locations corresponding to the front tow points. These are only tow points not recovery points.

  2. Heya detail buffs

Where is the best place to get a G220? Looking at getting one but no one seems to have stock? any recommendations on good stores for pads etc?

    HeeeeellllPP!

I purchased mine direct from Meguiars Australia. They are also available through ZAS Car Detailing Products. Not sure what stock is like for either of them.

Pads can be purchased through ZAS as well, but with the high AUD at the moment you could try Proper Auto Care in the US. I bought a number of products from them last year and it worked out much cheaper than getting it locally. Auto Detailing Solutions is the cheapest US site I was able to find but they don't ship internationally. I was able to negotiate with Proper Auto Care did match some of Auto Detailing Solutions prices and offered a partial discount on others.

  3. All very low key compared to the Prado release earlier this year. I thought that Toyota would have done a factory runout sale on the curremt model like Subaru have been doing recently with the Forester in preparation for the new facelift model.

Strange that the website shows the new kluger model but without any fanfare or indication that it is actually a new model.

Could it be that the Kluger is such a popular vehicle that most of the current models have already been sold, and there is such a huge wait list that all sales over the last few months have been for the facelift model?

  4. Hey,

I orginally tried the uni-bar route (professionally fitted), and it seems like a fairly solid fit. Unfortunately was just far too much shake when using the lights (hella chrome compacts) even on relatively smooth roads. Ended up just fitting a nudge bar, no shake and rock solid. They say the nudge bar is really just a spotty holder:) and being bolted direct to chasis it it definatelty works very well!!

    cheers

+1 to the above. The unibar is only fixed to the bumper which is quite flexible, not the chasis. The nudge bar is rock solid, but unfortunately adds a lot of cost.

  5. The critical factor is the pressure inside the car relative to outside of the car. While you are correct that the pressure will be greater on the underside of the box compared to the top of the box, it should still be less than the inside of the car (The car is also similar to a wing). I'm also assuming from your description that the moonroof visor was closed when the incident occurred. The window may have infact blown in and then sucked out after it shattered, and therefore you would be unable to tell the difference.

I have encountered the situation several times where I didn't close my hood properly and it was sucked open when I passed a B-double travelling in the opposite direction at 100kph each way. Fortunately the safety latch caught it.

  6. I did complain to my dealer during a service about the speedo reading fast, but their response was that they tested it and it was within the ADR limits so they wouldn't do anything.

The following two threads have a long discussion on the Kluger speed errors and are worth reading:

    Speedo Error Margin

Speedo error margin (Part II) some real data (OBD vs GPS speed)

Regarding ths issue of ODO reading for warranty, Taka did a test in the second thread which showed that the ECU reads closer to the correct speed. Hopefully the ODO takes its data from ECU and not the adjusted speed that the Speedo uses.

  7. We are shopping around for prices (Sydney metro). $48.8K drive away sounds very good. We have been quoted $58,474 for the KX-S 7 seater drive away. Is your Dad's a 7 seater? If so, who was the dealer? Also quoted $50,000 drive away for Altitude 7 Seater 4WD metalic paint.

Can someone tell me what the difference in driving is between the 19in and 17in wheels? (I know the 19in look better....)

Not sure about differeces in driving, but there is a major difference in available alternatives to the OEM tyres. Have a read of the following:

replacement rubber for Kluger 19 inch wheels

    245/55R19 Tyre needed Tyres

    New Kluger Tyres

Basically 17" has more alternatives that are cheaper than for the 19".

  8. Yes it is true. But I would like to point out that most of the reviewers are Americans. Not being racists at all here, but people who has been in the international forums for a long time will know that comment from the other sides of the Pacific is generally highly execrated, subjective and tends to pull on one fact and bash it to death. People here are more tolerant and rational - love you guys haha.

But I will say purely looking at the tyre tread. It is unlikely ATR will be quieter than Zero but there is what you think after reading the US reviews.

I agree, generally always take any opinions on the internet with a grain of salt :)

But one thing i believe is that with a tread rating of 400. It will last as long as the OEM ones.

From most reports, just about anything will last longer than the OEM tyres.

It's a pitty that the Scorpion STRs aren't available in a size to fit the kluger, as they look to be about the right balance between on-road and minor off-road performance.

Does ur alpine unit plays AVI from USB thumbdrive?

How much did you pay for the unit itself and installation?

One thing i notice the construct of these branded units is that they look alot more roboust even in pictures. See how the LCD is attached to the base unit.. The ebay ones have flimsy looking pivot that I doubt can hold the LCD firm enough so it doesn't vibrate while the car is on the move. Hm.. but they're so cheap and play anything.

It doesn't have a usb port, but it does have an auxiliary RCA input (Video/Audio L/Audio R) on the side mounted towards the front of the car, which you could plug iPod or another portable video device into.

I had the unit installed by the dealer, which was listed on the invoice as $1600. Actual cost was less as I negotiated down the overall price of the car for the final sale. It is an expensive unit, but I've haven't had any issues with it at all in 18 months. You could probably find a better deal with an Alpine dealer as car dealerships tend to bump up the price on accessories.

  10. Why not the ATR but the zero. I think the ero is more sportier tyre but the ATR Pirelli is more for off road and can be noiser.

Cough... The Zero is $230usd @ tyrerack.com. Shipment is usually in the region for$250 for 4.

On tyrerack.com, the ATR outscores the Zero on every criteria. Also quite a few reviews criticising the Zero for treadwear and noise, but mose of the ATR reviews give it high praise.

  11. When I spoke with the Toyota dealer that I purchased the vehicle from, he advised that there are both Toyota "Genuine" sensors and also aftermarket ones that may be fitted at a dealer. The unit that I have is the genuine one and the user guide that comes with it has Toyota printed on it too.

I can't remember what the reasoning was, but he said at times a dealer may fit an aftermarket product, and these would be the ones that have an LCD screen above the rear view mirror.

I'm pretty sure the Genuine product isn't one that is made in japan specifically for the vehicle, rather Toyota Australia probably struck up a deal with a local vendor.

They're like all "Genuine" accessories. Toyota does a deal to get bulk volume pricing and then sticks their margin on top and adds a logo on. The genuine cargo barrier is made by Milford Industries, the genuine roof racks by one of the majaor manufacturers.

  12. You won't be able to see out the back with the rear view mirror.

    I CAN........

With my Alpine 10" DVD system installed in roof, can see perfectly out the rear window! It is an awesome piece of kit, kids love it!!!!!!!!!!

    Reids

I agree, an Alpine 10" only partially blocks the top part of the rearview mirror (see this post). However, he's considering a 15" DVD player which is going to hang 340mm down from the roof (based on the specs in the ebay listing) compared to 200mm with the 10" alpine (as measured in my vehicle). The 15" screen will definitely obscure the rear view mirror. This may be an issue for some.

  13. Just put 4 new Bridgestones on my AWD Grande 4 wks ago, have done around 3,000 k's on them and they are showing signs of edge scrubbing already. Is there a fix for this problem?

The old Bridgestones were replaced at 36,500k's and had tread in the centre but the edges were bald. Tyres were rotated regularly and wheel alignments done.

If both edges are scrubbing then that could indicate underinflation. What pressure are you running the tyres at?

  14. As a new Kluger owner I find that is hard to keep to the speed limits ,the Kluger is so quiet and smooth I find it hard to keep under 60km 70km,I was wondering if there was a speed sensor that could be fitted .Thanks for any info ,Cheers Garry

Most portable GPS units come with speed limit alerts. Works in the major cities but limited coverage off major highways in rural areas. It's primarily what I use mine for 90% of the time.

  15. Agree with the cargo mat, it is realy good at keeping the back clean. You'll need to take it out if you use the 3rd row of seats, but that is a small price to pay. I'd also get some deep dish rubber mud mats for the front. They fit reasonably well and contain a 95% of the debris that normally ends up in the foot well. You will need to trip the corner off under the accelerator otherwise it limits the depth of travel. Only issue with these is that they cover the fuel cap release valve, but it is easy enough to get to for the one time a week I use it. As for the 2nd and 3rd rows, SCA sell a full width generic rubber floor mat that can be trimmed down to size and keeps the back clean.

Tow hitch is good if you are remotely likely to ever tow anything. I've used it a couple of times to borrow a trailer to take stuff to the dump, and also use the courtesy trailer from Bunnings.

I also have a cargo barrier as we like to load up the back when we go away. It makes me feel a little bit safer knowing that there is something stopping everything hurtling through the cabin if we get into a serious accident. Only downside is it needs to be removed when using the 3rd row, and the cargo blind can't be used with it, but then it's pretty hard to see in the back anyway with the privacy glass. My missus finds it a little distracting when she's driving (Which is very rare) but I don't notice it.

I have kids and don't have side steps. I find they get in and out ok. They both complain about it from time to time, but otherwise it's something that we happily live without.
