Yeah as far as I know all Australian delivered Coronas were RWD, at least up until '86 or so. Check out Ebay or the Trading Post for some bargains but it looks like most of them are in NSW.

Although the 4AGE is a good engine I don't think it suits the intended application since it is lacking in low range torque. The engine you are looking for is the 22RE, you could probably pick up a whole car in decent condition for less than $1,500

Yeah that's what I thought, a big turbo that takes awhile to spool.

There's a gauge on the left which I thought was boost pressure 'cause it only takes off at 6,000rpm...

So how do i get to this filter? Do i reach behind the air filter? Is there even a gap there?

To get to the filter you need to pull out your glovebox.

Just push in on both sides and the glovebox should slide out. The filter is located behind there.

I was even nice enough to take a few photos, now I need to find my USB cable.

Hey don't blame me, I thought it was a related question <_< With little knowledge of how A/C systems work i'd guess i've got an air bubble or something but being a gas system that wouldn't be possible would it?

Anyway you can get a dye to check for any possible gas leaks, also they advise you use the system at least once a week (or was it once a month) to make sure the seals don't crack and leak.

My A/C smells real bad when you first turn it on. It goes away after a few minutes, but the smell is rather annoying.

How do you fix that?

I'd like to add my own AC issue, I remember seeing a thread on it somewhere but I can't find it.

Anyway sometimes with the AC on cold I occasionally get a small burst of warm air, it usually only lasts a second or two but it's a little annoying. It's more noticeable when using fresh air but it even happens when i'm using recirculated air.

Just wondering if anyone else has had a similar problem or any idea what might cause the problem?

PS This isn't when starting the car (I think a little warm air is normal on startup) but it's more likely to happen after driving for about 15-20 minutes.

Just a guess but if it was driving fine earlier then maybe you've lost one of the balancing weights.

Saw on the news tonight that Toyota outsold their nearest rival by over 5,000 cars in March, Corolla was also the third highest seller after the usual Commodore & Falcon.

No wonder i've seen so many new Toyotas on the road B)

Toyota was the top-selling company last month with 18,649 vehicles ahead of Holden on 13,555 and Ford on 11,118.

The company also led the market on a year-to-date basis, its first quarter performance putting it more than 10,000 units ahead of its nearest rival.

To the end of March Toyota had sold 49,205 vehicles compared to 38,363 for Holden and 28,979 for Ford. Mazda was next on 16,571, well ahead of the embattled Mitsubishi on 12,997.

do they normaly test drive after the wheel alignment???

I don't know if it's common but the last place who did mine took it around the block a couple of times, guess it was a pretty major job since the steering wheel was at 90 degree lock while the wheels pointed straight ahead.

Wheels don't like going over gutters But in my defence it wasn't my fault, some old lady ran a red light and shunted me into the kerb...

Well i've had my current Corolla for almost three years & prior to that I had an AE92 for about 3 years.

In that time i've driven the latest offerings i.e. from 2000 onwards from Ford (Falcon, Focus), Holden (Astra, Commodore) Mistubishi (Lancer, Magna) & Suzuki (Baleno, Cino) and none of them have been up to scratch, personally i'd take my old AE92 over the lot of 'em.

Anyway having said that unless Toyota offer a real alternative in the medium-large car market such as a JZX100 Chaser or Caladina i'll probably be looking elsewhere for my next car. I don't want a luxury Lexus 'though it would be nice, I just want a sporty AWD/RWD manual...

Being a local I know the exact stretch of road you're talking about, long flat straights followed by tight 90 degree bends. It's a shame they lowered the speed limit but I think the amount of black marks on the road shows it doesn't really make a difference in the end.

Did you get a chance to go up Saddleback mountain? I've lost my brakes coming down once or twice :o

Jamberoo & Macquarie Pass also provide a pretty good run providing you don't get held up by traffic, it's a shame they paved bitumen on Jamberoo Pass 'cause it used to be a nice quiet dirt run in the days before I got my license...

Just a funny story.

Both my dad and I have had the wrong surnames on our licenses since day one, anyway my dad went to renew his license the other day and some eagle eyed employee finally noticed that his surname was spelt wrong since it didn't match his signature. It only took 'em 30 years to notice their mistake

In my opinion the best free solution is VirtualDub, you can also use Windows Movie Maker (which should already be installed on your computer if you're using Windows XP) but I prefer VirtualDub.

I've got a Sony camera, not sure how you saved the movies (on a Memory Stick or MiniDV) but if you can import the movie to your hard drive then you should be able to work it out from there.

If you're using Windows XP you can also use the powertools, which allows you to resize a bunch of pictures with a single right-click. You can get the add-on from here about halfway down the page...

Another Saturday, another crash.

Just in case it wasn't clear, I wasn't having a go at lower speed limits, if it's 3.55pm on a Friday arvo i'll still be sitting at 40 through a school zone. I do think 40 on the Princes highway at Sutherland & the area near King Georges road is just stupid but I live with it & the same goes for roadworks where i'll always slow down even if it doesn't look like they're doing any work.

The thing that annoys me at the moment is the trip across Tom Uglys bridge. From the approach to the exit is 60 (lowered from the usual 70) but i'll have just passed a bunch of cars around the bends, they'll all pass me across the bridge (where I do slow down) and I have to overtake 'em again

Personally I think there's a time and a place, I won't take risks in a residential area but you don't want to know the speeds I do on the F6 & southern freeway sometimes

My road has recently been lowered from a 60 to a 50 zone and I swear there has been more accidents in the past fortnight than the past 6 months (see my post in Spotted??? for further details). Maybe it's got something to do with the recent rain but even in the dry i've seen a couple of pretty stupid incidents lately.

So here's my (serious) question. Do you think a lower speed limit means people are preoccupied with their speed and concentrate less on the surrounding road conditions?

[sYD] Homer St Earlwood. Silver facelifted Ascent hatch absolutely crunched on the drivers side.

Looked like another driver ran the red light & clipped him while he was making a right hand turn, driver looked OK but i'd guess the car was/is a write-off.

At least the side impact protection did its job, yet another reminder to pay attention in the wet

EDIT: 2am and another crash just happened outside my front door. Same situation where someone tried to run a red light, again no-one seriously injured so score 2 for modern safety standards. Slow down dammit!

I had a reply typed yesterday but I thought it was irrelevant.

Anyway 13" was the standard wheel size for the lower spec AE92's & only the CS-X, SX & Ultima got 14" alloys as standard. Legally you're only allowed to go up by 2 inches from the stock size making a 15" rim the maximum allowable.

However this begs another question.

If the same model came with 13" & 14" rims depending on spec then which do you use? It's also applicable to the current 'rollas since most come with 15" rims yet the Sportivo has 16" rims so where do you draw the line?

EDIT: Forgot to add stock offset is 38 & PCD is 4*100

... The combination of a slightly wider tread, with a slightly stiffer sidewall has made a big difference to the handling.

Yeah I agree, it's only a 2cm difference in width but it makes the world of difference in handling. I don't know about other drivers but for me the 195's felt a little too skinny & when I pushed it into a corner I was always concerned about understeer...

Should be in a number of places - stamped on the firewall, on the compliance plate & also on your rego papers. If you bought it new then the bill of sale should also show when it was built & how it was shipped to Australia.

the ae92 i am thinking of buying is a low end 4af carby model, and has no tacho.

my question is, would i be able to buy the instrument cluster from a higher model with the 4af engine and just swap them? eg: would the low end seca have the tacho plugs and wiring already behind the dash and just not used?

Yep, if you get the tacho cluster out of a carby CS-X then it's a straight swap.

EDIT: Here's a pic of my old cluster, note the speedo is on the left & the tacho on the right. Click to enlarge.

Otherwise you could also get the SX cluster which includes other goodies such as oil pressure & voltmeter however that requires rewiring the existing loom & an additional plug needs to be fitted.

and my other question, assuming that i could swap the instrument cluster is, would i be able to change the odo so the new cluster shows the same km's as the old?

I think SuperDave summed up this one pretty well, I was lucky that my new & old clusters had almost identical mileage...
