New Hilux cab/chassis: bad shudder at 100kph

Hi all,

I've recently purchased a new Toyota Hilux ute (cab/chassis) and have noticed that at 90-100kph the steering wheel, gearstick -- just about everything -- gets a really bad wobble/shudder.

I've had the wheels balanced twice, and although it seems to have improved it a little, the shudder is still there. Is this a normal thing with cab/chassis? Or could there be a more serious problem (eg: an unbalanced axle)?

Many thanks for your help.

We fixed it!

It turns out, a lot of these new alloy wheels don't sit flush on the axle, and need specific o-rings to fill the gap. The wheel dealer had left these off, so the wheels didn't have a central pivot point -- hence the high-speed wobble.

After 6 full wheel balances this is a huge relief... and although the wheel folks were more than helpful, I still can't help but feel a bit angry that they didn't pick it up sooner.

If you had all 6 wheel balances at the same wheel dealer that left off the o-rings - I would think that he should be liable to repay these 6 extra balances - thats my personal view anyway

Glad I read this...and will discuss with my dealer. My Hilux SR5 (new extra cab bought in Oct 07) shudders horribly sometimes at around 80kph. Yet I've never hit anything and it's completely random. I thought the balance might have been out also, but it doesn't happen all of the time.
