I'll field this one fellas...

Super simple answer: wait until you're off your P's before you start fiddling with engine power. If you're wanting a turbo (don't we all), then wait for it, otherwise you'll be spending your money on half-measures that may not make you happy.

Also, before others bring it up: there is a reason why P platers are restricted. Nuff said.

Honestly, just wait. Save your money. Buy something good and respectable engine-wise when you have. Hell, buy a second car to do up and rally around the backyard!

i hear where your coming from FONIX, i also have an old school celica with P plates attached, and have already looked around, basically some of the engine choices you should look at depending on the power you want are; toyota 4AGE or 4AGE 20 valve, 3S-GE, nissan CA18, SR20 or a rotary if your pockets are deep enough to keep it running. I wouldnt recommend the 20 valve as when you come to slap a turbo on theres a fair bit of work to be done. Also you probably noticed there are no six cylinder engines here, thats because theyre so much heavier you will need a new suspension set up and you will still have handling problems as the car will be front-heavy. But if handlings not your thing then theres a heap of engines ou there like a nissan RB25DE or a few toyota ones.they will still require a lot of custom work but again, if you have the cash anythings possible, ive seen a few V8's in TA22/23's! which have smaller engine bays than your RA28. Id say get a SR20DE as thats what i shoud be getting early next year in my TA22 :yahoo: (cant wait!) theyre a good engine that have solid internals capable of handling 300-400 hp!, and the parts are cheap and is keeping close to the stock engine specifications which is very helpful for insurance. Hope this helps.

If the OP had a TA22, then I would agree with something like a 4AGE. However, he has an RA28, and a 4A will leave him wanting for more torque. 18RGs are common to slot in as they are a drop-in replacement for the 18RC already in there, and will give a big improvement over the RC. Saying that a 6-cylinder will make the car too nose-heavy is a bit of a rort though, many people have put in a 1G (2.0L straight six Toyota engine from Supras/Soarers) with no problems handling-wise, and there is a rather famous green RA28 doing hillclimbs with a 1JZGTE.
